They are only on the Criterion website. On the bottom of this page:

There is a seller on ebay that has them in larger quantities. Says they're the same ones criterion uses.

Sweet Smell of Success and Kiss Me Deadly, in addition to the already mentioned Night of the Hunter. All must haves, and can easily be rotated in anyone's noir rotation.

Can't go wrong with Fuller either...so I guess I can't pick just one. Sorry, I'm useless.

But it's interesting that RAH doesn't seem to have a problem with 1.85:1 being rejigged for 1.78:1. Actually, I'm surprised more hasn't been said about this practice in these forums. Although it's not a huge difference, sometimes these 1.85:1 frames look a tad too tight on Blu.
Because the difference is really, really small. Honestly, I have to say that the 1.85:1 ratio looks more pleasing to me (and if one region offers 1.85:1 and the other 1.78:1, I'll choose the former if the PQ is identical), but it's certainly no dealbreaker if it isn't.

But boy, that guy seems ridiculous. He offers examples of framing that actually look better in 1.85:1, and then claims that it was meant to be seen in 1.33:1. As if anyone would complain if the dog is missing in the frame . There's also no way that a Hollywood studio would let someone make a movie not in widescreen in 1959.

No kidding! I just checked, and Anatomy of a Murder's already shot up 10 dollars since this morning!

Stupid Canadian Amazon.

That's probably my order of preference, but each is an amazing film and they're all stunning transfers.

**YES, get Night of the Hunter. It's a fantastic film with fantastic supplemental material.

Thanks for all your recommendations! I couldn't choose between them so I just picked both up SWEET SMELL and NIGHT OF THE HUNTER for a total of 26 bucks. And now i'm thinking about Kiss Me Deadly and The Killing, but I still definitely want to pick up THE EARRINGS OF MADAME DE dvd before the sale ends!

Sweet Smell of Success was my 400th blu-ray by the way! Woo hoo!

BEST Cover Criterion cover voting is VERY tight at the top (2-horse race). I'll leave it open until I see a stop in voting.

If you haven't voted please see my signature for link.

They certainly wouldn't have allowed them to release it that way in '59 KubrickFan, but many pictures were still shot full screen for easy reframing to 1.66:1 for European exhibition, or broadcasting on TV at 1.33:1 without costly reduction reprinting.

The irony in all this is that during the Laserdisc era*, the big fight with studios was to get the full width of 'scope films transferred to home video...to include all of those seemingly extraneous details in the shot, such as "the dog", or one extra "cactus", or someone's "back." Same basic argument now by some, only in reverse...as in "I want to see everything that was shot, whether intended to be seen or not." But where does this madness end? Seeing boom mikes that were filmed with the expectation they would be masked in the projector or cropped out via optical zoom before exhibition?

Again, the only 100% reliable source for what was intended is the actual filmmaker. And even that sometimes depends on when you ask them.

* as chronicled and championed in the pages of the legacy version of The Perfect Vision.

Having seen SSS just before Kiss Me Deadly, I thought the Kiss Me Deadly to almost look a bit disappointing.
Honestly, the SSS transfer was quite amazing, where Kiss Me Deadly is only nice.

Completely off topic, I know, however, I went to B&N the other night to pick up my in-store orders of The Rules of the Game and The Three Colors Trilogy only to find they were holding the DVDs.

Fun stuff.

I was wondering, for those that are getting damage packages, is it because you ask them to send as they are available, one at a time?

I always ask them to ship in bulk to save shipping fees so I always get them in boxes.

I have not ordered anything online from them during this sale because of damage to the packages in the past, but I always asked them to ship my things in as few shipments as possible.

I got the BBS set in a box and it wasn't packaged tightly and it got damaged too. Three Colors came in one of their cardboard things.

I was wondering how it came about. I have been lucky as I never had anything damage, mostly always in big boxes since they ship everything all at once. The worst I ever got was some damages on slips and that is never a issue for me as I never keep those.

Well, the DVD copy of Three Colors was messed up in-store. Last night, when I got a call that there was a BD copy in their normal shipment (which came in as mine since it was re-ordered on Tuesday), I went to get it and it was perfect.

The only other perfect digis I have gotten in the mail, though, were Seven Samurai and Breathless from Amazon and Amarcord from B&N.

No sort of blow up bags to keep everything from moving? I don't know what they are called, i always seem to have my shipments with those inside preventing the stuff from moving.

Most of my things came in those atrocious white plastic bags, although that is partially my fault. I would not make one or two big online orders with four or more items each, but usually 1-3 movies because I wanted to use a coupon that was about to expire. I tried to get 90% of my Criterions in store so I could use the member discount.

There was a couple of them but not enough to stop it from moving around. The corners got smashed pretty good. Overall though Haven't had too many problems with them but I think I'll stick to regular releases next time.
