I have to choose one each from among these:

My list of favorite covers for 2011:

Diabolique
Black Moon
Zazie Dans le Metro
Kiss Me Deadly

Harakiri - something about the simplicity of this one really grabs me. I think its design represents the pattern of the seppuku wound.
Solaris
The Killing
Sweet Smell of Success
Island of Lost Souls

Worst covers for me were:

Naked
The Music Room
Identification of a Woman

Branded to Kill - I really liked the DVD cover.

It would be far easier for me to choose worst cover of 2012.
Hand down, no contest, it has already been won by Tiny Furniture.
The tight close-up of her deer-in-a-headlight face may be the worst in the entire collection.

EDIT: Tough to pick the best, but I chose Diabolique. For worst, I went with The Music Room.

Maybe so, but I never saw the DVD or knew it was the same, so it is new to me.

Awww, it's not that bad. Ever since it was announced, everyone keeps picking on her and the fact that the film has been chosen...what's so bad about it?

It's a mumblecore film that goes nowhere and has limited to no potential to be remembered six months from now - which means it's nothing like anything Criterion would normally choose for their collection. That's why people are upset.

It looks to me from the cover that Criterion didn't much like it

My favorite releases of the year all had pretty mediocre covers though, so while I love to dissect what they put on the front of these discs, they don't influence my purchase all that much. (Naked was my personal runner-up for worst cover, but one of my favorite releases of the year -- no idea why they didn't just use the perfectly fine DVD cover art for that one.)
If I ever find the DVD of Naked at a store for a good price I will buy it, just so I can get rid of the really ugly IMO Naked blu ray case.

I picked Fat Girl for the worst blu ray cover, and Solaris for the best. Picking out the worst cover was easy, and picking out the best was hard. I was surprised by how much I liked Naked, it is a fantastic film.

Ohhh, I generally don't like mumblecore. I wanted to give this a try, though...we'll have to see...I may end up hating it like the rest of you.

Frankly, I am surprised no one has mentioned the 12 Angry Men cover for their runner-up as the best one . I voted for 12 Angry Men and Diabolique the best ones and Broadcast News for worst.

Just watched Three Outlaw Samurai. Tremendous film. I can see it quickly becoming one of my all time favorites. Cannot wait to pick it up in February.

I can't wait either! It's a blind buy for me though. Hoping I enjoy it!

Plenty of great covers like Sweet Smell of Success, Diabolique, Insignificance and Solaris, but in the end I voted for Pale Flower. I just love the composition and its mysterious aura. The cover alone pretty much sold me on the movie from the start.

Worst is easily The Music Room, I don't know what they were thinking.

Glad to hear others appreciate the Solaris cover art. I had to choose between Diabolique and Solaris as my two favorites from my list. Diabolique won, but not by much.

I thought mumblecore films didn't exist anymore, or rather, I thought people stopped calling them "mumblecore". While on the subject, I actually think The Puffy Chair would be great for the collection.

If they stopped calling them mumblecore, I missed the memo. According to Wikiepedia, the genre is still alive and well (I'm fully aware that's not the best source to go by, but hey, it was easy).

I was going to ask if 'The Rules of the Game' is worth a blind-buy, but I suppose the overwhelming consensus will undoubtedly be 'yes', won't it?

Not from me, I haven't seen it yet. But I think that the response(s) will be yes.

I watched Three Colors: Blue tonight and discovered something odd. There is a scene, I believe in the second half, where Juliette Binoche is sitting at a table talking on the phone in her apartment and the boom mic can clearly be seen dropping down into frame for several seconds. Now, I know goofs like this occur occasionally, but I Googled this mistake and could find no documentation of it. Is this an error with the aspect ratio or transfer of the Blu-ray? Was it improperly cropped? Or has this microphone always been in the film? I just find it odd that no one else (that I could find) has mentioned it before now.
