I saw these Tuesday when i was there...$29.99 USD is better than $39.99 that B&N charge

As far as I am aware, TCCoBB was never released in a clear case. I have two older copies (with slips) and they are both in regular BD cases.

From my understanding, this "package" wasn't actually put together by Criterion.

I believe it was actually put together by Paramount, and then licensed to Criterion. More than likely Criterion wanted it because of director David Fincher.

That is the reason you will see them pop up at B&M big box stores (where you never see any other Criterions), why it is in a regular BD case, and why it sells for less than other Criterion releases. It is essentially a Paramount release that has been approved by Criterion, and sort of "inducted" into the collection.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong about this.

Benjamin Button was like the Disney titles in the DVD era: The Rock, Armageddon, Chasing Amy and The Wes Anderson Films. A deal was made, Criterion distributes them- Disney handles everything else.

Mind you Fincher's video producers do things in a very Criterion'ey sort of way.

I really enjoyed White Material. (I had the Artificial Eye BD several months before the Criterion edition came out) Great performance by Isabelle Huppert, beautiful photography by Yves Cape, and strong direction by Claire Denis. The story was poignant without being one sided.

Go with your gut on this one.

Plus the wonderfully moody, haunting score by Tindersticks:

(C'mon, you know there's gotta be one.)
2) Discard that disc, paper insert, and booklet. Keep the case.
3) Insert Benjamin Button disc and paper insert into empty clear case.
Or, you could just buy one of Criterion's blu-ray replacement cases from their site. There's no need to completely discard a disc just for a case.

Well, if you find a movie on BR more out of place in the CC than Ben Button, you can probably discard this movie.

But...isn't the paper insert smaller than the spine of a regular case, since it's one of those regular Blu-ray cases? (I know..I'm just making it more difficult...If I find this with a slip someday, I'll buy it)

The score was one of my favorite aspects of White Material. I'd love to buy that boxed set.

Exactly what I was thinking. The cover wouldn't fit into one of Criterion's cases.

Yes, it's been discussed quite a few times over the years... it's best to print out a cover. You also have to decide what you're going to do with 2nd disc of the Ben Button release since Criterion doesn't make a 2-disc plastic blu-ray case.

Last night I watched my copy of 'Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence' and was blown back by how nice it looked and the sound was wonderfully balanced....only problem i had was the subtitles, the white text on allot of the bright backgrounds made it hard to read at times...but this BD was like a time machine for me as I saw this at a small art house theatre in Detroit a year after it was released...great BD, so glad i bought it

Glad to hear from someon who also likes this movie. Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence is a favorite of mine. It was one of the first Criterion blu-rays I bought. I had it on VHS for years, having never seen it any other way, and envy you getting to see it in a theater. When I saw it for the first time on the Criterion blu-ray, I was blown away by how wonderful it looked. To me, it made Oshima's tale of redemption and sacrifice even more powerful a viewing experience.

Does anyone here has an opinion about the Studiocanal releases? I was just looking at their catalogue and they have some releases I am interested in, namely The Lost Honor of Katherina Blum and The Pianist. Might pull the trigger if the quality meets the expectations . BTW, I know this isn't Criterion related in any way other than the fact that they are films but I trust you guys .

That one has been at the top of my list for a very long time. One of my favorite films. The crappy American remake with Sandra Bullock doesn't come close to the original version.

+1

Even though I rarely bought Criterion DVD's back in the day, due to their prohibitive pricing, this is one of the few releases I went out of my way to get. Longtime fan of Sluzier's original film...not a fan of his Hollywood remake. It went along pretty well for the first two acts, then the studio tampering became evident...to put it mildly. 20th Century Fox essentially did to The Vanishing what New Line wanted to do to SE7EN...thank God that Fincher, Freeman, and Pitt all threatened to drop out if they turned it into the "Race against the clock to save Tracy Mills" movie. The Vanishing, sadly, didn't fare as well. Happy ending, my ass.

At any rate, digressions aside, it would be fantastic to get the Dutch original on BD from Criterion. It's very high on my list of most wanted releases.

Am I the only one who has done something like this?

[Show spoiler]

Typed a list of all announced titles.
Highlighted what I own, what I still need, and what haven't been released yet.

So far, out of the 132 blu ray's Criterion has released, I own 104 of them. There was a time I was up to date and current through every month. But around May of this year I fell off, and couldn't afford each release.
