Even though I rarely bought Criterion DVD's back in the day, due to their prohibitive pricing, this is one of the few releases I went out of my way to get. Longtime fan of Sluzier's original film...not a fan of his Hollywood remake. It went along pretty well for the first two acts, then the studio tampering became evident...to put it mildly. 20th Century Fox essentially did to The Vanishing what New Line wanted to do to SE7EN...thank God that Fincher, Freeman, and Pitt all threatened to drop out if they turned it into the "Race against the clock to save Tracy Mills" movie. The Vanishing, sadly, didn't fare as well. Happy ending, my ass.

At any rate, digressions aside, it would be fantastic to get the Dutch original on BD from Criterion. It's very high on my list of most wanted releases.
Holy crap I want this so bad. It was one of three CC DVDs I owned. I throw it in from time to time...I'd love to throw in a BD instead!

I believe it was mentioned when CC posted the blurry (or was it just far away) pic of the titles they were working on for 2012. Some people placed it in their list of titles they were able to make out.

Here is the DVDBeaver page you ought to be looking at (not the one Manicsounds pointed you to on the MoC thread). The Universum release is well worth considering.

According to my most recent count I own all but 21 Criterion Blu's already released.
I h ave an excel spreadsheet which lists, in Spine # order, the movies, their directors, the year of the movie's initial release, language spoken, aspect ratio, runtime, color or B&W, runtime, BD release date, and number of discs.

I have highlighted in different colors what I own, what I've watched, what is ordered and on its way, what hasn't been released yet, and which ones are OOP.

However, I did pick The Battle of Algiers.
The Rules of the Game was very close, but my copy hasn't arrived yet for me to re-watch it.
If I opened it to multiple then people will say "let me list 3!" or "why can't I do a top 5?". One is best

Branded to Kill and Tokyo Drifter will make for a fantastic double bill. I'm really looking forward to these.

Well the Seven Samurai deal didn't take too long to sell out.

On the other hand I found Red Beard quite boring on the whole and The Bad Sleep Well was immensely dull till the halfway mark where I gave up on it. Stephen Prince gives a wonderful commentary on Kagemusha where he talks about the actual historical context of the film and the dramatic license that Kurosawa takes for his vesion.
I found Kagemusha to be a bit trying at first, while The Bad Sleep Well had me engaged from the get-go. I enjoyed it, but it's not one of my favourite Kurosawa films. A weaker Kurosawa (IMHO) is still better than a weaker film from some other director. Different strokes for different folks.

A very bad Kurosawa would still be a masterpiece compared with any movie made by Uwe Boll

Furst, that is funny

Second, yeah I know I speak too much about Kurosawa and many of the other Japanese directors at times I just like Asian cinema!

It's going to be really interesting to see which title emerges from the pack to claim Best Upgrade. There's no clear-cut consensus yet...

Is it a bad idea that I'm planning on blind-buying both 'Branded to kill' and 'Tokyo Drifter' without having seen either one, or even anything by Suzuki? Or would everyone recommend only buying one....they both sound interesting, though.

Voted for High and Low

The Battle of Algiers was a really strong contender, though.

Wow! A lot of great upgrades from Criterion this year.

Ultimately, I ended up voting for Salo. I know, it's almost a vote, but I honestly like Salo quite a bit and was one of the upgrades that I was really wanting to see come down the pipeline.

It is probably the collections most "notorious" spine, and I am sure that even non-Criterion film fans were looking forward to this upgrade. Even if just to satisfy the curiosity of watching it.

I am hoping this year is a strong year of releases as well.

R.I.P. Ken Russell.

That's too bad, my prayers go out to his friends and family.
