LOL!

It's funny that Wes Anderson doesn't get much respect from most Criterion fans. I like his work but I must admit that I don't really love it.

IMO, his best work is actually The Fantastic Mr. Fox, and it ended up not becoming part of the collection at all...

"Fox" was funny, the animation was great, and the story was more engaging and better developed than most of his live action work. IMO, some of his live action films seem to really be focused on portraying characters, more than on telling a story involving those characters...as I said though, I do like his work... I am just not in love with it. The Fantastic Mr. Fox, however, I do love.

But can you imagine all the full diapers if it did win?

I enjoy the Wes Anderson stuff.... and looking at my collection of everything I own on DVD and Blu-ray, or simply asking my wife (who would be quick to point this out) I don't have a lot of comedies, because I'm a pretty harsh critic when it comes to those I suppose.

I've seen three of his films. I don't really care for them.

Yeah! I am an horrible person

It's just weird but none of his film attract me at all and I just have no wish to see them. I really can't explain more than this

Thanks! Looking at the screen-captures from the review alone, they both look interesting to me, and I had a feeling it was in line with what I like.

Bizarre sounds good . If I like these, I'd probably want to check out some of the others too

First, the death of Ken Russell are really sad news. It always strikes me bad when a remarkable director passes away . In other news, I voted for Army of Shadows as best upgrade. Have not seen all of my CC just yet, but this was easily the best film I have seen this year along with Taste of Cherry .

I'm the same. I don't care for his films at all. I've kept watching them to find one I like but I've come to the conclusion that I just dislike every film he's done.

Once again, congrats.

BTW: You have a nice collection of Criterion films, a lot of quality titles in there, including the beloved Third Man. That one is a bit difficult to come across for a decent price these days.
Tell me about it... it was OOP when I got it but it's going for a lot more now.

Thanks for the compliment anyway, reminded me that I've not updated my profile in ages. And yeah, as Mody41 says, unfortunately they don't ship abroad. Kind of a shame, I sort of understand why they might not be able to for the films themselves (rights issues etc), but for an empty case...

I'll go on record and say I really enjoy WA movies and am always looking forward to see what he does next. But I enjoy stylized filmmaking with articulate antiheroes more than some.

I think WA is of the first generation of filmmakers that grew up on the Criterion Collection and whose films are directly informed by it. Which is one reason why he is so beloved by them and why he is so disliked by his plebeian peers.

Heh.

For anyone reading this discussion and thinking that Wes Anderson is this extremely controversial and divisive director, there are a lot of people that just "like" his work.

The very definition of 'enfant terrible' SpiderBaby. But he had a fascinating body of work, which deserved much better treatment on home video (e.g. Image's VHS-redux DVD of Mahler, *shudder*). I highly recommend John Baxter's bio, Appalling Talent: Ken Russell.

And I wouldn't mind at all if Criterion added spines for either The Devils or Savage Messiah...or a box of some of Russell's best BBC music bios.

I saw this article and thought it may be some nice light reading. Sheds an interesting light on the Wes phenomena...

Sad news about Ken Russell, as I always enjoyed a viewing of Tommy as an alternative to the album....

FINALLY got three colors from B&N sale!
so excited, and excellent condition copy a major plus.
hate the delays that seem to always happen with B&N, but their sales and packaging just cannot be beat.
really hope they are able to stay in business.
for a job well done B&N--
Criterion fans everywhere salute you.

I ordered Kuroneko from Barnes and Noble and it shipped on November 4th, but it still hasn't arrived. I'm in Manitoba. Are there any other Canadians waiting on their orders?

That's great news, and yeah, I wonder if that statement is enough to convince some people in this thread that there actually is a problem with the current batch.

I already ordered my UK edition for peanuts last week though. Even though I would have preferred to have the Criterion, £5 was too good to pass on.
