Have you seen Johnnie To's Sparrow?
There's a nice Hong Kong blu-ray available from YesAsia.
It's my favourite film of the last decade.

I'm trying to decide which of these to keep. I've seen all of them and think they are all solid movies. I bought enough Criterion BDs during the sale and probably should only keep 2 or possibly 3. My rankings would probably be the following, but I'd love to hear input:

The Magician
Stagecoach
Sweet Smell of Success
Shock Corridor

Pointing out that the majority of you are tried and true snobs who rejoice in making people feel bad for liking Wes Anderson does not make me a "hellion". Nice word choice though.

If you get rid of The Magician I'll come to your house. Seriously though, I would keep it. I cannot comment on the others because I have not seen them yet.

I don't think I would go that far. Obiviously, a lot of Criterion fans like him. His films are less art-house and certainly more approachable than some in the collection. This thread may give you that impression because there are some vocal Wes haters here who do not hesitate to let their feelings be known, given the opportunity.

Personally I like Wes's films. Yes, his characters tend to be quirky, with dramedy developing out of that quirkiness and the situations they find themselve in, but his films have a lot of heart and I enjoy them for what they are. Some feel he is over-represented in the collection, but for me having only discovered his films through Criterion, I say so what. He obviously sells and he has a relationship where he actually seems to care about and promote Criterion.

Being so vocal about disliking a director's work is something I find both amusing and a bit ridiculous. There is not a director in the collection I could see myself vocally bashing repeatedly, and some here are especially vitriolic about their anti-Wes feelings. Personally, I don't care for Malick, but I don't hate on him. I actually own several of his films and have even recommended them here from time to time, just not with glowing praise. Everyone has different tastes in film. That is why we can create a thread like this and let it ramble on for years and over two thousand pages and - occaisonally - discuss films and their directors.

There is only one film in the Criterion collecton that I really don't care for, mostly because I do not like the genre the film represents and find it forgettable and over-hyped. To me, releasing it just delays an upgrade I really want. No, that film is not Salo. It comes out in February and is the director's first film. I hope she will make films I actually like in the future, but if she does not, so be it. If all her films are iterations of her first film, and if most make their way into the Criterion Collection, I still can't see myself vocalizing the kind of hatred Wes gets in this thread from some folks. Hey, she's out there doin' it, and I am not.

Maybe it will be good for Criterion to release Armageddon and The Rock, just to put the Wes - and Dunham - films in perspective, and to sit back and experience what real b**tching is like.

Peace.

I wouldn't pass up 'Sweet Smell...' The Blu presentation is just perfect, and so is the packaging.

I can not remember if this was posted before, but has anyone else with an Oppo 83 player had it not play White from the 3 colors trilogy? If so, has anyone heard anything from Oppo? This is the first CC title that has ever not made it to the main menu. Thankfully it worked fine in my other player.

The Oppo 83 has an old Mediatek decoder chip, it's no longer being supported by FW updates. A scandal is brewing about it.
Oppo went from honest and indy to shady as Sony fairly on the quick.

BFI is releasing the original British X cut of the film that was originally shown in British cinemas, which is good news, yet isn't the full uncut version of the film.

This will most likely be the best you will get, as Warner is standing firm on not releasing it here in the states in the full uncut version. So if you want it, get on the BFI DVD next year.

See, told you guys.
So there's now glitches on White, Carlos, and The Thin Red Line? What's the deal with Criterion lately?

LOL! Good point.

I am going to stick my neck out here a bit and openly admit that I like Armageddon. In fact, when it came to theaters, I went to see it twice.

After it came out on video (VHS in those days) we got a big group of us together and had a movie watching party that featured it as the "main event" movie. Everyone had a great time and really enjoyed the film in that setting.

One great laugh I always share with a friend of mine was literally cheering out loud in the theater when Steve Buscemi popped up in this one.

I really need to watch Mystery Train. I liked Jarmusch's Coffee & Cigarettes (the scenes with Iggy Pop with Tom Waits and Bill Murry with the guys from the Wu Tang Clan are hilarious), and it has Buscemi in it as well.

Anyway, I probably should never have said that in this thread, but I like "big dumb action" to go along side cinema "greats". It all depends on what kind of mood I am in.

See, told you guys.
Yup, I was testing my own disc the other day and that left surround channel is definitely muted.
I actually borrowed the Optimum release from my friend, because I want to see if the error was also there. (I'm pretty sure it's not.)
Thanks for posting the reply from Jon.
So I guess we'll now have to exchange discs for both Carlos and White. A bit of a shame.
I'm just hoping they'll offer an exchange to people outside of the US.

Sad news about Ken Russell, as I always enjoyed a viewing of Tommy as an alternative to the album....
I think we, as a society, need to agree that using a blog as a quotable source should not be allowed in polite company.

You may as well say, "I have this picture my 3 year old drew in crayon and snot, and I think it sheds an interesting light on..."

Yea, it's a tough choice. I mean, I COULD keep all of those, but I spent enough money during the BN sale. I might just return Shock Corridor, a great movie but not one I particularly need to own. Or I can just keep them unopened for future resale value, as I got them cheap w/ coupons.

Stagecoach is a great movie, but again not sure how much rewatch value there is in there.
