I'd like to see von Trier's Europe Trilogy get a blu ray release. I have Europa on dvd, and I'd like to have the first 2 included as well.

At any rate, I'm not sure what held up the Bergman but it seemed Cuaron just didn't have the time to devote to the YTMT release in time for 2011 (a la The Game which people were expecting last April).

Obviously The Four Feathers took longer than expected, too, so if anything the New Year's clue is really a "coming soon" more than a "coming this year."

Anyway I would hope there is a big release besides those on tap -- The Gold Rush or Week End specifically.
As I said before, I already gave up on Y Tu Mama Tambien (I still want a release but not expect one anytime soon). I also want them to release Weekend as soon as possible along with Le Havre. We seriously need more Godard and at least a Kaurismaki in BD. I am surprised Criterion didn't give the Proletariat Trilogy a full release instead of an Eclipse. They more than deserve to be upgraded (Or I just love them too much ).

Finally got around to watching 12 Angry Men last night - spectacular film with lots of re-watchability, and a fantastic transfer to boot! Really enjoyable.

I watched it 2 nights ago.... had to hold off because I found I accidentally ordered the DVD, so I immediately ordered the Blu-ray (already have a different DVD release of it too )

I am re-gifting the DVD to someone, since I tore it open before realizing it was a DVD

I just watched my copy of Island of Lost Souls last night and was amazed at how they were able to get an 80 year old film to look that good. It had its faults, for sure, but seriously...great work Criterion!!

The movie itself was fun, and at 70 minutes, it was over before I even realized!

It is a good deal, and it seems to be the regular price. I ordered it at this price back when I pre-ordered 12 Angry Men. I watched it the other night after 12 angry Men actually.

Ma mere tells me that my B&N order of Kiss Me Deadly and Stagecoach are here, I'm just trying to get out of her if they goofed and gave me DVDs or not. I am amused because she came into the city shopping today, and dropped off Kuroneko to me, and the mail came after she got home. Need to wait a week for them now.

There are quite a few Criterions I have yet to view. Luckily I am taking the 20th to the 22nd off and we get the 23rd and 26th off for the holidays. A week to spend catching up with some wonderful films,

I can't wait to watch it, but I plan on reading the HG Wells story first, which I've had sitting in my car for the past week. I'm way too distracted by technology to sit down with a book these days.

An eReader would solve your problems. It's a book+technology. I technically have 2, a Sony first generation 6" Touch eInk model, plus a rooted Nook Color. However, I still buy and read paper books. I just got a paper book today, which I will read once I watch Kuroneko.

Island of Lost Souls is a fantastic BD, and I enjoyed it much more watching it a second time.

Methinks it was Amarcord. Bitter Rice would be awesome though. TCM was nice enough to show it a month or so ago, so I recorded it because so many people hyped it up in this thread.

Shell, I will tell you that World on a Wire was announced before that tour was over, so anything seems possible. The Wire tour still has some dates left too. Both were just at the Siskel Center here in Chicago, so you never know....

True but it was screened before the Blu-ray will be released is the point I guess I was trying to make.

I think Weekend and Col. Blimp will probably be released in June or July.

Has anyone seen The Virgin Spring? It looks like a good film and I did enjoy Seventh Seal.

I just finished watching Leon Morin, Priest and can't believe how much I liked it. The general opinion seemed to be that it was a slow film but I found it completely captivating. Melville's pace is becoming a trademark for me and the gently editing and compositon are a thing of beauty. I really love how Melville composed his shots, they were never boring and always seemed to have something happening. Emmanuelle Riva's acting was easily the most enjoyable aspect of the film. Belmondo obviously delivers but I found Riva's character a lot more likable (The fact that she looked absolutely gorgeous helped a bit ) and down to earth. Overall, I am really happy about this blind-buy and would recommend it to any Melville fan. It was a hell to track down this film but Criterion more than makes up for all the previous hassle. Also, opinions ?

As a Bergman admirer, I enjoy it. Plus, it has the great Max von Sydow again.

Also, The Virgin Spring won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film... and, really, when has the Academy ever let us down?

If you're not aware, The Virgin Spring was the inspiration for Wes Craven's Last House On The Left.

Agreed!

I loved Antichrist and Manderlay. I am dying to see Dogville (one film I believe would probably be a nice inclusion in the Criterion collection), and I have The Boss of it all in my Netflix cue as I type this.

Also, The five obstructions seems like it would be a great film as well. I like the idea of forcing yourself to work with such crippling limitations...it makes you become more creative. I am interested to see what Jorgen Leth came up with. Experimental film making is fascinating to me, especially when the finished product is a good one.

I have my fingers crossed that Criterion will release Melancholia when it hits BD/DVD.
