I own the AE blu-ray. I just think Criterion could do better. Plus, I'd like more extras (and in HD). Extras in 480p are unacceptable.

Most definitely!
Any Lynch in the collection would make me a very happy man.

I would especially love to see Twin Peaks get a spine.

They have previously said they are working on The Shooting and Ride In The Whirlwind (both with Jack Nicholson), with an expected release during 2012.

Sure, and Canada Post's shipping speed following the strike.

The BFI versions are great if you can play UK blu-rays

Wow, you came out of the woodwork just to be a jerk to me?

I only care about that so I can watch my films. I can't find them in the stores around here, so I order them online. Also, I'm pretty sure I didn't create an entire thread dedicated to that, unlike some of the threads on here where people scream blu murder and advocate piracy because there's French on the packaging, or it comes in a DVD case.

FYI, Anatomy of a Murder is coming on TCM this Thursday at 11:30 AM EST, right after Days of Wine and Roses, and before Witness for the Prosecution. It's a Lee Remick tribute day.

I noticed that as well, I wondered if it is a former rental copy or something of the sort...oh well, it's still a great deal for someone who really wants the film and doesn't care about the packaging or cannot afford a new copy.

Ooooh, all three of those are amazing...I cannot wait for the latter two to enter Blu-ray territory.

Also, The five obstructions seems like it would be a great film as well. I like the idea of forcing yourself to work with such crippling limitations...it makes you become more creative. I am interested to see what Jorgen Leth came up with. Experimental film making is fascinating to me, especially when the finished product is a good one.

I have my fingers crossed that Criterion will release Melancholia when it hits BD/DVD.
If you liked Manderlay you will definitely like Dogville! Like you I saw these two in reverse order. As for The Boss of it All, I thought it was hilarious; just don't go into it expecting anything similar to von Trier's other films! The Five Obstructions is totally worth seeing - not a film that I would need to have in The Criterion Collection, but it was very entertaining.

Just an observation, much like yours. Not sure why you took it so personally.

I only made a somewhat playful "pot meet kettle" comment to a fellow Canadian.

Watched Harakiri yesterday for the first time. What a great film! It must have been a difficult decision at Cannes that year.

I should have included more smilies, as you didn't pick up that I was joking as well.

Harakiri was awesome, but The Leopard, which beat it for the Palme d'Or, was just a wee bit better.

I agree with this 100%.

IMO the film is (of course) the most important part of selecting a purchase, but having nice packaging and artwork add to the value IMO.

Take Taxi Driver, The Social Network, most Criterion releases, Kino releases, etc. for examples.

Having a nice "package" for a favorite film gives me a feeling of added value, and oddly endears certain releases to me.

It's a great film... But it's not for everybody.
I agree with you and I'm also a big fan of Crumb - I own a serigraph of one of his prints. But as much as I loved that documentary, it's not one that I need to see again, especially not at Criterion's prices. So I suppose if I ever saw it for $10 or less, I'd pick it up, but failing that, I won't be purchasing this film.

I saw this in the DIA (Detroit Institute of the Arts) Theater when it was released, bought it on VHS and have the Criterion....LOVE Crumbs work for ages...FYI if you didn't know, his brother Phil killed himself awhile ago (he's the one that lived at home still during the filming, the oldest of the boys)

I mean, look at the Three Colors set. That is an attractive-looking product, and that's before you even see how great the films are.

Since I'm only interested in about two-thirds of the releases (Blu-rays, anyway), it also makes announcement day more interesting because even if there aren't any films announced that I'm interested in, I get to see some cool new graphic design work.
I totally agree. Whether I buy an ebook version, a mass market paperback or a deluxe hardcover edition with beautiful printing and typography, I'm reading the same novel, but there's certainly a better experience (IMO) reading the deluxe edition.

Most of Criterion's BDs have quite beautiful packaging and booklets and I think it adds to the total experience.

I think it's something that gets lost in the virtual world. Anyone who grew up in the LP world will tell you how much album graphics and liner notes meant to the music listening experience. And even in the CD era, great boxed sets that had beautiful packaging and great booklets with comprehensive liner notes greatly added to the experience, especially for veteran artists. Rhino was especially good at this before the original founders were pushed out.

If one only cares about the movie, I'm surprised they care about BD. Seems to me they can get the experience from downloading video.

For those who do care about the graphics, check out this site:
http://kellerhouse.com/
I think this design firm does amazing work. And a lot of the packaging will be familiar.

Agreed easy blu and Joe...that's the reason why I've been buying the BFI Ozu blu/DVD releases. Criterion has been taking way too long in releasing any Ozu/Naruse/Mizoguchi, etc. on blu.

As great as the BFI releases have been so far...they don't include any supplemental material. The fact that they include two films per release is certainly welcome, but I'd really like to see at least Tokyo Story and Late Spring get a nod in the near future (which I think they will).

It's a shame we will likely never see any Naruse show up on blu...in any country by any distributor.
