Have you seen him in "Save the Tiger"? He won the OScar for that one, and it's superb. |

This is a topic that I wonder about quite a bit. Does Criterion license a film for "X" amount of time when they first get it? I assumed that is how it worked. A company feels that licensing their film to be sold as part of the Criterion collection is a better option than just releasing it themselves due to the associated quality and care given to Criterion's releases. Not to mention, the added exposure, if that is also needed. Also, I assume that Criterion covers the cost of literally every aspect of putting these films to market, once they have the "master" they are going to use. My thought was that if the film did extremely well with Criterion, and proved to be a great money maker, then the studio who produced the film (or currently owned the rights to it) would then want to release it themselves once the initial contract with Criterion expires. The problem being (IMO) is that the original studio doesn't usually sink in the time, money, or effort in seeking out a quality "master" print to work with. Then they take shortcuts with the restoration/cleanup process, and release a mediocre product, just to cash in on the titles popularity. Perhaps I am incorrect, and I could very well be, as all of these thoughts were nothing more than assumptions that i have about what goes on behind the scenes. ![]() ![]() Anybody care to correct me, or fill me in with verified accurate information? ![]() I would be very happy to learn something about how Criterion's licensing process works. ![]() Last edited by Criterion Collector; 12-13-2011 at 11:24 PM. |

![]() BTW Rich, even though you imported those Park Circus releases, looks like 'Gold Rush' may see a spine in March. It is frankly, about time....Seems typically Criterion announces the title right after it is in their newsletter, but sometimes it varies..... ![]() |

![]() ![]() Here's to hoping for a "great" 40% off sale. ![]() ![]() ![]() Also, I am glad to see more Chaplin come to the collection. IMO these films are a bit of film history, and genuinely deserve to be given the Criterion treatment. I will be looking forward to it, for sure. Honestly, I would like to see more silent films on BD in general. Haxan is one that I am especially dying to see get an upgrade. ![]() I like that Kino have done some great silent releases, most notably Metropolis, Battleship Potemkin, and The Birth of A Nation, and I am constantly on the lookout for a long overdue Nosferatu upgrade. Now I'm back to getting the emails, including the ones with the generic coupons, the same ones you can just as easily find at the dvdtalk website. But have yet to receive any of the specially coded, single use coupons that others seem to get. |

I don't think Criterion are discounted at all in stores anyway. They are $39.95 MSRP for non members. Members get 10% off everything regardless of what it is - books, coffee, magazines, or whatever other junk you might happened to be buying. Unless I'm mistaken, the 10% stickers are just referring to that member discount. Last edited by AgentOrange; 12-14-2011 at 02:10 AM. |
