all the item listing said was no front artwork, way way way misleading
it was Le Cercle Rouge (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]
Which is why you buy from trusted sellers only. I'd demand a refund through Amazon.

Hen Cast?
Some people at the FB page are saying it is Chaplin's The Gold Rush which, if true, is a waste of a clue .

EDIT: Found this capture at another site...

What I thought was a bandage is the wrap Charlie puts on his foot after he and the other fellow eat his shoe.

Still am not receiving any member discount emails from B&N like I used to. But when I renewed my membership, I stopped receiving them.

Yes, I did rather notice the missing shoe...

Jack Lemmon was the best. His performances always floor me. I love him in The Apartment, The China Syndrome, Mister Roberts, and The Great Race - to name a few.

Have you seen him in "Save the Tiger"? He won the OScar for that one, and it's superb.

Le Cercle Rouge, I believe, is licensed from Rialto Pictures by Criterion.
Interesting, and thank you for the information CCFix.

This is a topic that I wonder about quite a bit. Does Criterion license a film for "X" amount of time when they first get it?

I assumed that is how it worked. A company feels that licensing their film to be sold as part of the Criterion collection is a better option than just releasing it themselves due to the associated quality and care given to Criterion's releases. Not to mention, the added exposure, if that is also needed.

Also, I assume that Criterion covers the cost of literally every aspect of putting these films to market, once they have the "master" they are going to use.

My thought was that if the film did extremely well with Criterion, and proved to be a great money maker, then the studio who produced the film (or currently owned the rights to it) would then want to release it themselves once the initial contract with Criterion expires.

The problem being (IMO) is that the original studio doesn't usually sink in the time, money, or effort in seeking out a quality "master" print to work with. Then they take shortcuts with the restoration/cleanup process, and release a mediocre product, just to cash in on the titles popularity.

Perhaps I am incorrect, and I could very well be, as all of these thoughts were nothing more than assumptions that i have about what goes on behind the scenes.

Anybody care to correct me, or fill me in with verified accurate information?

I would be very happy to learn something about how Criterion's licensing process works.

Hmmm...I never thought about that...but they are typically marked at $39.95 and some can be marked at 10% off. I wonder if they will keep those tags on or will pull them for the 40% off sale?

I assume the sale will also be online, as my laziness will not be going anywhere near a B&N a week before Christmas. Usually the sale will be 40% off MSRP, which is still a good deal. Then for all you 'members' you will get another 10% off, which really sweetens the deal. Then all the coupon people will come out of hiding and they will rejoice for another week or so. Now the Suzuki films and Vanishes will be at an 'acceptable' price....

BTW Rich, even though you imported those Park Circus releases, looks like 'Gold Rush' may see a spine in March. It is frankly, about time....Seems typically Criterion announces the title right after it is in their newsletter, but sometimes it varies.....

I hear ya Joe...it's a LOT more convenient for me to hit my local stores and the one I usually frequent is 10-15 mins. from my house and on the way home from work.

If you Google "DVDTalk Barnes and Noble Coupons", there is a listing of active coupons (both in store and online) and links for printing out the coups/checking codes, etc.

If they end up doing 40% off their normal selling price (vs. the msrp) these will end up being an excellent deal indeed!

Here's to hoping for a "great" 40% off sale.

Also, I am glad to see more Chaplin come to the collection. IMO these films are a bit of film history, and genuinely deserve to be given the Criterion treatment. I will be looking forward to it, for sure.

Honestly, I would like to see more silent films on BD in general. Haxan is one that I am especially dying to see get an upgrade.

I like that Kino have done some great silent releases, most notably Metropolis, Battleship Potemkin, and The Birth of A Nation, and I am constantly on the lookout for a long overdue Nosferatu upgrade.

That's why I held off on "The Gold Rush", John, and only bought "The Kid" and "City Lights".

Is there any possibility or rumor that Glengarry Glen Ross could come to Criterion? It's one of my 10 favorite films of all time and would be a perfect addition.

The best way I can describe Shimizu's style is Ozu-esque as far as casting and writing and VERY Naruse-esque as far as framing, camera shots, and pacing. There were times when I felt a great deal of Naruse in his style...but he manages to bring his own sensibilities to all of his films. I think you would really enjoy this set of films!
I've watched 3 films in the Shimizu Eclipse set and the third one, The Masseurs and a Woman, is my favourite. Enjoy

To fix that you need to call them up and have them fix your account. (Assuming you have elected to receive emails via your online account.) Had the same thing happen to me and nothing for a number of years.

Now I'm back to getting the emails, including the ones with the generic coupons, the same ones you can just as easily find at the dvdtalk website. But have yet to receive any of the specially coded, single use coupons that others seem to get.

During the 50% sale they replace some of the standard price stickers with ones that read ("50% off, members receive additional 10% off). During the 50% sale, members still get the standard 10% discount on top of everything else. So I don't see how the 40% would be better in-store.

I don't think Criterion are discounted at all in stores anyway. They are $39.95 MSRP for non members. Members get 10% off everything regardless of what it is - books, coffee, magazines, or whatever other junk you might happened to be buying. Unless I'm mistaken, the 10% stickers are just referring to that member discount.

Well, you are ahead of me since I have not even cracked my Shimizu open yet. Mostly that is due to starting my way through the Oshima Outlaw Sixties set, but I have not got very far even there due to work committments getting in the way of my film watching. Funny thing is, when I bought all of my Eclipse sets during the B&N sale, I also told myself I was going to take it slow, savoring the experience, and not rush through them one after the other. Now work has made that goal completely achievable.
