Well, its obvious. It is the one BD that comes in a regular BD case, and has a rare slipcover for those that want to dedicate their lives searching for the Holy Grail of slipcovers.

Only reason I could think of...

Because all the other movies are either not in color, have words on the screen or are 'artsy fartsy'.....choose....

What about Dazed and Confused, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and the Wes Anderson films? Those don't quite fall into your definition of a Criterion.

They used to make an announcement on the website for most titles going out of print. Off the top of my head I can remember the Straw Dogs and Tokyo Olympiad announcements.

Touche. At the same time though, a lot of "non" Criterion fans buy those ones constantly, and proceed to whine about the price of paying for their beloved Wes Anderson on BD, because Fantastic Mr. Fox was oh so muhc cheaper.

Yay! I'm starting some Anderson trolling!

Oh, I totally forgot about that! Some people just won't buy films without a slipcover. I have offended the slipcover gods.

I was actually banned last year for a week or so for pissing on the god of slipcovers. I think I asked why anyone would go crazy over a piece of cardboard. Didn't go over so well on the slipcover thread.

Heck, I'll admit they're nice, but when my copy of Das Boot and Iron Man 2 didn't come with one, I just kept on living my life.

I have other obsessions...

Thats pretty painful. I was glad that my copy showed up with one. However my Mad Men Season 4 did not come with one.

I sent them a nasty return e-mail letting them know that maybe they ran out of the product but the "release date" had certainly not changed.
I've gotten that email from B&N a few times in the past, but the items usually ship within a matter of days anyway. It's just a generic message for any "new release" they can't ship on the exact release date.

-Lady Vanishes release date 12/6
-on 12/7 I got email that Lady Vanishes was delayed.
-It shipped 12/10.

Today I got an email for Tokyo Drifter that again says the same thing, it will probably still be sent out within days. Not that I really care so long as they don't charge me until it ships...

That's...that's just sad.

Don't feel bad though, a thread that mentioned that slipcovers were silly in the grand scheme of things was locked and deleted by some mods, yet people were allowed to be abusive, nasty, and all that in the sales threads. So obviously verbally abusing slipcovers is more of an issue than eStalking and verbally abusing posters.

I'm eagerly anticipating your announcements of the announcements tomorrow, you always have the best scoop on the new Criterions.

thanks.

Personally I would always go with the Criterion's release of anything- always.

The brand they have built makes those more obscure titles accessible to those interested to experiencing more great cinema regardless of its name recognition.
No those are classics. But there's a lot of filler like "Fat Girl" and most of what IFC gives them.
