Just kidding that scene just really reminded me of The Shinning.
Agree, and I watched that right after watching Eisenstein's "Strike!" and seeing the ending of Apocalypse Now unfold before my very eyes. Kind of cool seeing such awesome films pay homage to scenes from the silent era.

I know! It's like that Peter Sellers fellow ripping off Mike Myers's Goldmember, by having a meeting take place, where instead of Nathan Lane mouthing Beyonce's lines, they had some broad mouth a man's lines in that movie about a Fox or something.

Mike Myers is such a hack. I used to enjoy Austin Powers when I was in high school, but 10 years later, and a greater knowledge of film, all I can see is where he ripped off everyone else's films, especially those of Peter Sellers.

Not to defend Mike Myers but that was is goal, sort of make fun of the 60's and the style of movies that was being made. He also use a lot of Our Man Flint in his movies. They are still funny as long as you just take them for what they are, silly movies with no much in them. At least the stories are more fun then a lot of other movies I could name in the last 10 years. Granted I haven't seen them very often, I guess it would be very possible for someone to OD on them after a while

And I suppose yes I will defend Mike since he is a fellow cannuck

Alright I have derail this thread long enough, now back to Criterion.

I really enjoyed The Phantom Carriage, lots of meaning inside of it. I am always amaze at how most people view movies made in that time as being all Chaplin or Buster shorts. They just don't realise some of the very serious movies that were made during that time that are still worth being seen even after close to a century.

Tomorrow I will watch Kuroneko

See, that's exactly it, I OD'ed on the Austin Powers trilogy. They are still somewhat enjoyable, but I enjoy the comedy films they ripped off, or paid homage to, depending on how you interpret them, much more. Also, I think the fact that Myers is thinking about doing a 4th one is just silly. It's like he's trying to hard, and there really should have only been one, maybe two films at most.

Anyways, Kuroneko's fantastic, which is why I was willing to pay full price from Amazon.ca for it when B&N goofed.

I suspect that $$$ was the deciding factor here, and not so much integrity to the core of his narrative.

Thumbs up

So I just watched Something Wild. I liked it. It isn't nearly as popular as other Criterion titles. I kinda wonder what fans of the company think of them releasing it (I still think there are heated debates about the Criterion DVD releases of Micheal Bay movies).

If you want to know more about my feelings on Something Wild, check out the review I did of the disc. I'm surprised my review is only the second one. That goes for a lot of Criterions. Luckily, I'll be doing Island of Lost Souls and Salo soon, so those entries will be a bit more fleshed out too. Review can be found here: https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Somet...4/#UserReviews

Next one I'm gonna watch is Secret Sunshine.

(I know it may look like shameless plugging to post in the forums that I've written a review, and well, it is. However, I always put it in a forum where it's on topic and will hopefully be a good source of discussion. Also, as you may be able to see I spend time writing these, and it's pretty hard to get people to read them, so I figure there's nothing wrong with a little nudge to get people to take a look.)

I kept going back and forth on that one. Every time I started thinking 'this is a pretty ordinary ghost story and not a particularly interesting one at that' something would make me do a double-take and I would think 'ahhh, okay, maybe not'.

I'm still not completely sure what I thought of it but I don't at all regret the purchase and will definitely be going back to it down the road.

Oh, and did anybody else get any serious
[Show spoiler] 'Let the Right One In' flashbacks during one attack in particular
? I have no idea if there was any actual influence but it was kinda cool to wonder about.

Indeed, give it a try. In my opinion, The Killing is miles ahead of that film, but Le Cercle Rouge is an exceptionally well-done film too.

I finally got around to watching Dazed and Confused for the first time, which I bought a month and a half ago during the sale, and had been sitting on my shelf..

I got absolutely nothing from it. Was barely interested to keep watching it after the first half hour.

But as always..I don't give up on films right away, so any insight into why it's so loved is appreciated.

Either that or announce that they're not going to so I can just grab the Arrow release already.

They should also see if MGM would part with The Asphalt Jungle. Although it's strange - something like Thief seems like a perfect fit to me but The Asphalt Jungle almost seems like a reach.

How accurate it portrays the 70s I think is one reason why it's loved. Plus, I think some of us can relate to the characters especially if you were around during the 70s.

I first watched it a few weeks ago and enjoyed it. I absolutely loved the soundtrack though. The second I heard Aerosmith's Sweet Emotion I paused the movie and went online to find the guitar tabs. I HAD to learn that guitar riff. A few weeks later I ended up buying Toys in the Attic,

I just finished watching Rushmore for the first time. I thought it would be kind of boring, but for some reason I decided to blind buy it anyway. I was actually very surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I just added Bottle Rocket and Darjeeling Limited to my wish list because of it.

This. I was born in the 1980s, and was only about 8 when the film first came out, but at the same time, there really wasn't a lot of difference between the 1970s high school experience and my late 90s one, with the exception of fashion and music. Of course, I'm also a huge fan of American Graffiti, andf "teen films" set in decades other than modern times, such as Dick, All I Wanna Do (I watched it when it was still called Strike!), and The World of Henry Orient.
