The Asphalt Jungle would also be great -- a very good and somewhat overlooked noir. As would an upgrade of The Killers.

I was wondering what noir films might be next on Criterion's list. The Asphalt Jungle would be a wonderful addition. Touch of Evil would obviously work as well.

Letter Never Sent is still fresh in my mind after watching it on youtube, what a beautiful film. It will be twice as nice in HD on a proper widescreen TV.

Me too. I would be happier with a Zissou blu upgrade, but I think we will get The Royal Tenenbaums sooner.

Always been very curious about the US distribution rights for SALO, That is for such a controversial film as it was and still is, United Artists held US rights to the film and that is who Criterion has the current license from UA - MGM home video. (Wish the these films opened with a more appropriate United Artist logo)

For those who know more, what was the reasoning that led them to hold the rights in the US and never disowned the film, esp when Warner Bros. still feel the need to bury and ignore THE DEVILS in the US (Yes a BFI DVD is being released in 2012 in UK)

From a business standpoint etc.

I disagree with the arty Michael Bay remark. I find Malick's cutting more like in Mizoguchi's films like Ugetsu or Sansho The Bailiff, where the shots spliced together have a flow to them that don't make the cuts distracting and disorienting like in a Bay film.

Looking at DVDBeaver's review of Traffic, I'm disappointed that Criterion's release looks about the same as Universal's. Not a huge surprise since Uni provides Criterion with their HD master, but I was hoping the ugly image was due to over-sharpening on Uni's part. It looks like Soderbergh approved Universal's master so I guess it's what he wanted.

Just some more Melville in general really, but I agree. Although I'm completely content with my Arrow BD of Rififi, as of now.

Something Wild is okay - I didn't like how it changed gears midway through but so be it. I remember it was considered quite irreverent and different back in the day, but now it just seems kind of dated. Just funny how the mid-80s had a few pictures with a mysterious free-spirited woman being followed by hapless dudes.

It's in the collection primarily because Criterion and Jonathan Demme are cozy, and it's mainstream enough to sell and arty enough to be credible. It doesn't offend me, though it's thin on extras and has an awful cover.

I agree with the first paragraph, though I actually liked how Something Wild shifted gears midway through, but as I hint at in the review I thought the ending brought the tone too far the other way and was rather typical of a Hollywood ending. Also, I like the cover, but mostly for it's stark simplicity and I'm a sucker for green/black combinations.

dvdbeaver should not be taken seriously. they have failed several times over.

I have Amazon Prime and its free to view their streaming movies via my computer or BD player in SD & HD so I watched 'Carlos' earlier this week and I picked it up yesterday.

Not a huge fan of the packaging, I don't like that the box opening is on the wrong side + the booklet falls about every time you open to get the disc's. I'll watch the supplements tonight as I never go out on NYE (too many pissed people)

Just ordered The 400 Blows, Complete Jean Vigo and The Killing. Can't wait, it's been over a year since I bought my first and only Criterion so far

I agree, what a pointless and disappointing release, especially since a much more natural-looking HD master without the excessive sharpening exists (used on the German Blu-ray for example.) Needless to say I've canceled my pre-order.
