Are you unfamiliar with Criterion as a company? Have you never looked at any of their titles other than Fear & Loathing and Traffic? Most standard releases have an msrp of $39.95. If you've never heard of Criterion before looking up two of their most mainstream films, then I understand the confusion on price. But if you've ever bought a Criterion blu ray in the past two years, you'd see nothing out of the ordinary.

So Universal released it with a very solid transfer, so it's a problem?

If Universal had released a crappy version of it, you could justify the price?

So..... with your rationale, if Fear and Loathing would have been a very nice transfer prior to the CC release of it, you would have sworn off Criterion at that time, and not waited until now to deem them "Out to get you" ?

The other poster is correct though. Criterion isn't forcing you to double dip anything, and I'm also pretty sure nobody forced you to buy the Universal release that has since put you in the quandary.

titles like Traffic I kind of hold out for Barnes & Noble 50% off sales. Just depends on how bad I want to see the film. I can wait for Traffic.

When it comes to the Criterion MSRP pricing it can be because of licensing fees etc. Who knows how much they have to pay those inolved on Commentary tracks etc.. sure they are old but the release is on a new format and probably have to sign off on them etc.

Your clearly-spelled-out complaint doesn't really make a lot of sense though.

Is this release not up to their usual standards? Is it somehow lacking?

Or is the only 'problem' here that the CC release isn't leaps and bounds better than a pretty decent Universal release?

If that's the case then aren't you really arguing that they shouldn't haven't bothered releasing this in the first place?

(fwiw I don't really see the point of this release either but that has more to do with the fact that I think the movie sucked)

Regarding Anderson... am I the only one who loved The Darjeeling Limited? It was the first film of his I saw and it hooked me right away. I have since checked out Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums, and while I enjoyed them I wasn't that into them.

Just curious because I never seem to see Darjeeling mentioned in Anderson discussions.

Do you fellas think that wave in this year drawing could refer to Peter Weir's "The Last Wave"?

You not the only one. Also a lot of Criterion's French films made me want to learn French as well.

Nah, you're definitely not alone, it's one of my favorite "feel good" films. It deserves more love.

(And I still say Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was more of a "true" Roald Dahl film than Selick, Roeg or Anderson ever managed to create, and it wasn't even one of his own books.)

I'd hated him from afar just on reputation, but had never had any empirical-evidence excuse to actually SIT through one of his movies in excruciating detail before Fox. I remain unpersuaded.

Dahl didn't write the final product directed by Stuart:

Quote:
Roald Dahl disowned the film, the script of which was completely rewritten by David Seltzer after Dahl failed to meet deadlines. Dahl said he was "disappointed" because "he thought it placed too much emphasis on Willy Wonka and not enough on Charlie," as well as the non-casting of Milligan. He was also "infuriated" by the deviations in the plot Seltzer devised in his draft of the screenplay, including the conversion of Slugworth into a spy and the "belching" scene. This resulted in his refusal to allow an adaptation of Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator to be made.

Also, you made no comment on Burton.

Kids??? That's the reason I rented "Fox" I'm not a big fan of it. It has plenty of quirky moments I guess, but I enjoy his other stuff much more. I only watched "Fox" once, but I guess I could give it another view, but I'm not going out of my way to do that. If Netflix has it for streaming, then maybe.

I'm not a huge Wes fan or anything, but I enjoy a lot of the dry wit, and bonus points for many of his films containing Bill Murray, who I AM a big fan of.

I, er....didn't feel comment was necessary.

(Unless you mean the dopey confusion regarding James/Peach, where Tim-boiz immediately assume Burton directed every Henry Selick film ever made. )

What's everyone's most hoped for upgrade/new title in 2012?

For me there are three upgrades I am desperate for - The Passion of Joan of Arc, Ivan's Childhood and The Spirit of the Beehive. I'm hoping at least one will be out before the year ends. For new titles, I'd quite like to see the Apu Trilogy, one of the hallmarks of world cinema, finally get the treatment it deserves.

I second Ivan's Childhood and I'd add Z , and Antonio Guadi (I watch this one a lot) and Jeanne Dielman 1080...and of course I choose very dark horse titles.

If so, it should be a contender for AQ of the year. The soundtrack on the SD release is just amazing I can't even imagine how it would sound in true HD. Awesome film from my favorite director.

The Tin Drum for the upgrade, of course. I would love to have the theatrical and directors cuts both included.

New? I could go for Chaplin's City Lights (would have chosen Harold and Maude but it's already a revealed clue).

I also would love to see The Passion of Joan of Arc upgraded, although Wild Strawberries and/or Hiroshima Mon Amour would do quite nicely.

I hope that more Chaplin is released along with Bicycle Thieves. I'm also hoping that Criterion releases McQueen's Shame. It has Criterion release written all over it.
