They have had Olympia for a long time (that is if they still even have it). Criterion seems to be non-confrontational in what they release, so any Riefenstahl would be rare.

It's not worth mentioning yet

I would imagine their prices (particularly online) will soon settle back into more reasonable ranges but they took pretty draconian approach to pushing everything back up to msrp before they went live with the sales.

And considering past beatings they've taken one can hardly blame them.

Nah, it's more a hatred of whatever everybody else is doing at any given moment. It just happened to lists this time.

Well, there is always hope ! There was a lot of discussion about the BD release of The Birth of a Nation when Kino announced it months ago but, at the end, it all turned pretty well (For us, at least ). Films like Olympia and The Triumph of the Will would fit perfectly in the Collection. I mean, what about the "A continuing series of important classic and contemporary films"? It sure will bring lots of discussion from both sides but it is hard to argue against the importance of these films.

Haven't seen his version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo yet. Considering the original version is one of my favorite films I'm sure I'll like it. Zodiac was my least favorite. I recall nearly falling asleep before eventually leaving early at the theater during that one. And I almost never walk out of a movie early.

With Wes Anderson films I guess I straddle the fences. I neither love or hate his stuff.
Haha that's funny, I LOVE Zodiac, Se7en, Social Network... Button was ok. But I dislike The Game, Fight Club and Panic Room. I guess because they are "typical" standard Hollywood type films (The Game and Panic Room especially). I prefer his films that are daring and innovative, not cookie cutter.

Maybe because it is actually a 2-1 B&N sale.

I think I may have to watch it again to appreciate it more, but I unfortunately will wait until a sale occurs, and I clear up some of my other wishlist backlogs.
I've seen the theatrical and the tv versions. My recommendation is to watch the full tv version. It's in 4 parts (each about 90 minutes or less) an absolute essential, imo.

For me there are three upgrades I am desperate for - The Passion of Joan of Arc, Ivan's Childhood and The Spirit of the Beehive. I'm hoping at least one will be out before the year ends. For new titles, I'd quite like to see the Apu Trilogy, one of the hallmarks of world cinema, finally get the treatment it deserves.
Off the top, and in no particular order:

  • Rest of the Powell/Pressburger films
  • La grande illusion
  • The Thief of Bagdad
  • All the Preston Sturges films
  • La grande illusion
  • Rashomon
  • Picnic at Hanging Rock
  • Andrei Rublev
  • La grande illusion
  • Les enfants du paradis
  • The Killers
  • The Earrings of Madame de...
  • In the Mood for Love
  • More Lubitsch
  • More Ealing
  • La grande illusion

True, but Synapse still has TotW as their one "art-collector" entry for niche-unsellable edgy-shock classics, Olympia was last seen at Pathfinder (which means it could be up for grabs by now), and anything silent made in the US is Kino's king-of-the-mountain territory.
There are other companies, you know, and Criterion can't go sampling with their plate at the smorgasbord, like we all mythologized during the early DVD days.

I checked it out but most Criterion titles are $40, so 3 for $80 isn't a good deal.

The majority of the cuts in the theatrical are from the last half of the long version (IMO the best half)... so you'd do well to see the complete version as it was intended. The first 90 minutes are my least favorite.

It's about what Amazon sells them for. It's still cheaper than Criterion's site.

My biggest wants for new additions are definitely F.W. Murnau's Faust and Polanski's The Tenant. As for upgrades I would love to get L'Avventura and L'Eclisse on Blu-ray! That would be

But Criterion's site you get $50 for every $500 you spend.

Yea but if you think of that as being 10% off, you're still paying $28ish dollars for a one-disc BD.

12 angry men was such a good film. Its certainly the best film I have ever seen that is entirely set in one room.
