You're right. They received my defective disc today and sent out the replacement disc the same day. See my post here.

Back from my little suspension! What's good, Criterion lovers?

Thought I'd take the time I had off to pre-order Belle de jour, La Jetee and Three Outlaw Samurai with some Amazon card money I had.

I ended up ordering Thin Red Line based on the boards' recommendation. If it's half as good as your reviews, I'm sure I'll love it.

Even better, there is a film of substance here, so it doesn't need to rely on that to be enjoyable!

I agree but it's not for everyone. My buddy didn't like it but enjoyed the AQ/PQ. He likes Saving Ryan better for what it's worth.

I actually think Spielberg's direction on Saving Private Ryan is excellent. The weaknesses lie in the script, particularly Matt Damon's "Why me, what's so special about me. These guys fought just as hard" speech.

I still believe it is the best looking title in my collection. And yeah, the movie is great as well. The "Journey to the Line" segment is probably my favorite 10 mins. or so ever committed to celluloid.

Yea The Thin Red Line does not suffer from this problem. Which is why I think it's one of those rare perfect films. But not everyone gets it.

Well, Criterion just posted on FB a picture of Wim Wenders picking some titles at the "Criterion Closet" and a small label underside says "Coming Soon". I know this "ritual" happens when someone goes and makes a feature or commentary for a film they will release so could it mean we MAY see some new Wenders the this week ? I would be all over The American Friend !

Absolutely. That's probably my number 1 most wanted upgrade I want from Criterion this year.

I was at Best Buy today doing some bargain "trade and saves", and was shocked to just randomly see Lady Vanishes and The Killing there. Sure those are probably two the more popular/recognizable releases, I'd never seen this Best Buy have a single Criterion edition blu-ray EVER. I wasn't looking to buy anything for full $29.99 MSRP to didn't really look too hard, but should have at least made a note of what else they had.

Wonder if this has anything to do with Best Buy basically turning over the DVD area to a 3rd party company?

The Thin Red Line is a great film, I really need to get around to upgrading my (non-Criterion) DVD copy.

All this talk of Seijun Suzuki has me checking out his work a bit, as it seems like he was doing some intersting/groundbreaking things in film. Unfortunately, he only has one film (Pistol Opera) streaming on Netflix at the moment, and it isn't one that is in the Criterion collection.

Anyway, for those that are familiar with his work, could you please "fill me in" on what types of films he makes? It looks (to me) as if his "gangster" pics are highly stylized and probably contain potent violence. These are positive attributes IMO.

I was just wondering if the dialogue in his films is similarly "stylized", or witty type dialoge (Tarantino type dialogue), or does his work resemble Godard's Breathless, in style? I understand that Breathless was the type of film that inspired Tarantino, but I found it to be a bit more "mellow" than Tarantino's work. Who, I am obviously a huge fan of.

Or, the third option is that I am WAY off course with my line of thinking.

Can someone fill me in on what Suzuki's films are like?

Add Pale Flower, Dazed and Confused, Fear and Loathing, Solaris (that one really surprised me last summer), Paths of Glory, Something Wild - I've seen quite a few there now that I think about it.

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if they get an endcap one of these days. Maybe after Godzilla.

Spotted The Killing there last week too. One of my favorite Criterion releases.

When did they discover that this was a perfect film, and did it knock "Showgirls" off the top 40 list?

Agreed. Funny thing is I first saw The Thin Red Line in theaters when I was like 16, didn't understand it and left the film early thinking it sucked. It was only several years ago as my movie taste evolved that I watching it again and was blown away. It's now one of my favorite war films.
