Harold and Maude
Working from a script by Colin Higgins (9 to 5), Ashby tells the story of the emotional and romantic bond between a death-obsessed young man (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou’s Bud Cort)
(sigh)...ONLY CRITERION would immediately remember Bud Cort from a Wes Anderson movie.
Harold aside, some people would remember Brewster McCloud, the MASH intern Major Burns traumatized, or even Edgar the computer, but no, Wes is holy and sacred text.

BTW...I can't speak for all of the April titles...but I was just able to preorder both Late Spring and The Czech New Wave titles from Amazon. The Ozu for $27.99 and The Czech New Wave for $48.99

maybe this short film can serve as an appropriate reaction to the April schedule.

(this post was meant to be lighthearted in nature so please, no untoward hatred and venom from those members who happen to be thrilled with the April release selections.
Thank you for your cooperation)

This is a pretty misleading statement. Touch of Evil was released by MOC in November 2011. Compare the releases of Criterion from November 2011 - April 2012 to the releases of MOC during the same time frame to make a logical argument (there isn't much of one).

I didn't mean you directly. There are a lot of people on here that have been saying Criterion is crap now. It's like Criterion can't win with anyone, either they don't release what people want, they release stuff with no special features at a lower price point (I honestly think they're doing this because a lot of people only buy their films on sale at B&N or Amazon), or they do release something, but there's a minor flaw in it because they keep turning out so many films because people seem to be demanding it.

I've pre-ordered Harold and Maude and The Organizer (I need more Italian films) on Amazon.com, although I may cancel them to put them in through Amazon.ca if they put them in at the cheap prices, because I'll save a few bucks with the free shipping.

I own all of the current BFI Ozu releases...those that are from Criterion DVDs:

Eclipse Series 3 - Late Ozu: Of the five films in that set...only Equinox Flower and Late Autumn have been released by BFI...both on BD. I am willing to wait for BFI to release Early Spring, Tokyo Twilight, and The End of Summer...which I think will all be released on blu.

Individual releases: The Only Son/There as a Father (Criterion) have already been released by BFI as supplements on two different releases. The Only Son (CC) on Late Spring (BFI) and There Was A Father (CC) on Equinox Flower (BFI). The Only Son on DVD only and There Was a Father on blu.

Tokyo Story was released by BFI on blu...along with Brothers and Sisters of the Toda Family on DVD only.

Early Summer was also released by BFI on blu...with the supplemental film What Did The Lady Forget (pre-war classic)...DVD only.

An Autumn Afternoon (blu) and A Hen in the Wind (DVD) which was mentioned earlier.

Good Morning (blu) and I Was Born...But (DVD only).

The only CC DVD set that hasn't seen a BFI blu treatment yet: Floating Weeds (1959...remake of) A Story of Floating Weeds (1934)... I expect these two within the next year or so.

There is a DVD set coming out in February of silent comedies that CC has not released called The Student Comedies.

FYI, TCM is showing these late Sunday night, early Monday morning back to back after the Abbott and Costello 3-film marathon. You might be able to get some idea of how they would look in HD if you get the HD broadcast of TCM. No guarantees, because Hausu looked a lot better on BD than it did on the HD channel.

It's undoubtedly art but it certainly isn't cinema.

You can find pretty much everything anyone says misleading, if that's the way you choose to see it. But I stand by it - other than the Coward/Lean box and Last Temptation, I'd rather have all of these, plus La Silence de le Mer and even te Pasolinis over Godzilla, Tiny Furniture, A Night to Remember, and most of the other unforgettable titles C has been issuing so far this year. Oh well.

Thanks BG! I actually saw both of the "Weeds" film as rentals from NetFlix, when I still had their disc service. I first got into Ozu by streaming Tokyo Story on NetFlix...Late Spring was offered as a stream as well....this was when they still had an agreement with Criterion for their streams. I haven't seem those fims in a while and it will be nice to revisit them...BFI hasn't released them on blu yet.

Joe and Dude...if you are looking for a later Ozu film that isn't as "slow" as some of his other films...these would be good ones to watch. You'll get a chance to see how his style of making films changed from 1934 to the early 60s. I'll bet the farm that BFI will release these both in the same package and that Criterion will eventually do the same...I hope so...because there are two GREAT commentaries...one for each film. The later dated film done by Roger Ebert and the earlier film by Donald Ritchie (noted Japanese film historian and Ozu expert/enthusiast).

Try to catch these on TCM if you can stay up that late Sunday night. I've got MLK Day off on Monday.

Thanks again BG for the heads up!

Taste is a matter of opinion my friend...By Brakhage is interesting...but just not my cup of tea...neither will the Frampton set I would guess. But kudos to those who find pleasure and entertainment in them.

A fine line here Yami...that's what a lot of people said about "2001" and "Fantasia" and Kubrick and Disney took a lot of s**t for it.

I'd say that "2001" and "Fantasia" blended together art and cinema while the avant-garde experimental stuff is just plain art.

No. It was the weird looking necklace the drawing of Ruth Gordon was wearing. There's nothing like it in HAROLD AND MAUDE, and it does indeed look similar to the necklace Mia Farrow receives from Ruth Gordon in ROSEMARY'S BABY. Still a very valid guess IMO, unless you can come up with a better explanation for the necklace?

Yes...but wouldn't putting "Art on Film" be a form of Cinema?

Probably but to me 'cinema' is filmmaking with narrative or theme. A lemon with some lighting contains neither unless you're being over-analytic.
