I must agree with a lot of you guys who think April is a very weak month. Not interested in any of the releases. Quite boring selection with very few bonus features, they should all be priced $30 in my opinion, well maybe not Harold and Maude.

I can respect that and the old me would probably have agreed with you...but I have seen film and art "do-si-do-ing" over the years...film itself has been incorporated right into art and vice versa. As I said earlier, it's really not my cup of tea and I might not understand the interest in it...but different strokes...

Your right about taste being a matter of opinion but there is no way in hell that anyone finds watching an Orange for 5 min in different lighting pleasurable or entertaining. I'll say it right now, anyone who says it is is lying. There's no way there are people that pretentious. This actually reminds me of the movie Art School Confidential.

Sorry if I'm inundating you with Ozu...but I knew this would happen when CC finally released ANY Ozu title on blu.

For those wishing to read up on Ozu, there is a very good book by David Bordwell called "Ozu and the Poetics of Cinema"...it's OOP and I see that it is listed on Amazon for at least $136.00...but it is available as a free download. LEGITIMATELY with the permission of David Bordwell. I would gladly email you a copy of the pdf file...but it's 412 MB...it's a HUGE book with a lot of pictures from his films, locations, etc.etc.etc...

Here is the link if you wish to download that pdf file.

https://www.cjspubs.lsa.umich.edu/el...series/ozu.php

There is also a LONG writeup by Bordwell himself on the download page about the making of the book and why he opted to make it available as a free download. In a nutshell...it was the cost it would have been to him, if he had any publisher distribute the book. This was the best way for him to make the book accessible to those that really wanted to read it...that says a LOT for the man...

If you download it...BE PATIENT...it takes a LONG time for the page to load the pdf...remember..it's 412 MB. Let me know if you have any problems downloading the file...

What has the feedback been from any/all of us on By Brakhage?...just curious...is the considered to be "cinema" as well?

While we're at it...what about Kenneth Anger and Andy Warhol?

Why is "The Third Man" by Criterion still out of print? Can't they just renew the license or whatever?

I dont wanna pay nearly 200 Dollars for one of few remaining copies!

You're just not drinking the right booze, or taking the right drugs.

Just finished watching Smiles of a Summer Night, and I really enjoyed it. It's still a bit depressing for a comedy, but then, I like comedies like that, as The Graduate is one of my favourite films. I'm moving on to Cul-de-Sac now, and I'm all caught up on my Criterion BDs until Gojira shows up.

Thanks for the link; Ozu is my next foray into Japanese cinema, and this April release is gonna be my stimulus. Always found Japanese film sorta inaccessible until I saw Kore-eda's Nobody Knows. I was really moved by that movie, so I checked out the rest of his work (including Still Walking), then the Nikkatsu Noir set, then Oshima, Kurosawa, and Mizoguchi. I'm ready for Ozu.

Pretty excited to browse the Bordwell book. I listened to a recent book by him about how contemporary cinema isn't post-modern original but a continued working out of Classic Hollywood style; great ideas and examples, but I suspect it's a better read than listen. Killer academic vocabulary and real long sentences.

For the Ozu book, I couldn't get the link to work. When I went to the site, the Download Book link was inactive tho the List of all Pages link worked. Anyone else have that experience?

LATER NOTE: Hey, guess what! When you go to the List of all Pages link, there's a link to download the whole book. <blush>

When will Criterion begin to release the ECLIPSE series in Blu ray? Nice 'unexpected' set of releases for April.

I don't think they will, that's the point of the Eclipse series.

If you're not wanting to pay a higher price for a now OOP The Third Man copy from Criterion you can just pick up the Studio Canal Collection version for considerably less money. You should write a letter of complaint to Studio Canal since they own the film and didn't re-license it to Criterion.

You're welcome! Enjoy the Koolaid! The next director(s) you need to check out after Ozu are Naruse (first...as he was a very good friend of Ozu's and is a good comparison) and Shimizu (another good friend of Ozu's and a cross between him and Naruse...but unique himself), who I only discovered this past sale in November...along with Nikkatsu Noir.

It's a great book...it took me a long time, but I brought it to work and printed it on a very good Xerox Laser printer (one of the perks of being a Network Specialist for a school district). It looks great and my wife velobinded it for me into three separate books...that's how big the friggin thing is!

Sorry you're having problems with accessing the "entire book" link. I've already tried today to access it via a PC with both IE and Mozilla and on an iPad 2 via Safari. I can click on an active link which opens another tab/page and a page looks like it's loading...but failing. From what I remember...this is normal, as the file is pretty big and it takes a while to load the PDF.

Anyone else experiencing a problem?

Also if I may add (even if your choices are very good) Kenji Mizoguchi is also another one to have a look at. I really enjoy his movies
