Of the films from this set that you've already seen...which one is your favorite?
Of the films in the set (I have seen 3), without a doubt it's Daisies.

While pretty much every "New Wave" of that time looked to be influenced by Godard in some way (Brazilian's Cinema Novo was really influenced), Daisies IMO wasn't. It's more experimental, surreal, anarchic (which I guess you see the Godard from) than anything Godard made BEFORE Daisies. When you see more Czech New Wave films, the more you see why I prefer it to the French New Wave (though I also don't consider anything after Pierrot le fou of Godards' to be put in that category, so I'm of course not talking about the great La Chinoise, etc).

I'll watch Frampton when I get a chance, but I can't say that avant-garde or experimental film makers are my cup of tea. I couldn't get into La Jetee, nor Brakhage's works.
It's my cup of tea. The term "Avant-garde" in films can be such a wide range of things, I'm sure you like something.

Greetz Durden
The last information posted was from an interview last year (early to mid-2011) with Fincher. He stated that Criterion would be releasing it at some point, but that they were waiting on his cooperation. With Fincher's busy schedule, though, he hasn't had the opportunity to give the time to Criterion. The link to the interview was posted in here a couple of times so you might be able to find it using the search option.

BOTH!!!
I say they, as I'm not complaining about Criterion's releases like some of you are.

He's apparently not a "footnote or a sidebar." You're just injecting personal opinion from something you saw 30 years ago...
I dunno, that read pretty "footnote and sidebar" to me...more akin to the privileged doodlings of a frustrated academic. My point though was not who or what Frampton was, but what he wasn't, and that's "influential" or "important". I didn't make that up either; I got it from Criterion's own masthead/tagline for many years which proudly read: "An important series of..."

Certainly true for narrative film; for example, initially I was very indifferent to the works of David Lynch and David Cronenberg, but now consider both of them Kubrick-class cinematic treasures. Conversely, in the 70s I was a big Ken Russell fan...but then I grew up.

However, with Roarschach-style experimental films, you pretty much get what they have to offer on the first pass...

As noted in my previous post to BohemianGraham, I didn't pull that word "important" out of a hat. It's from Criterion's own tagline for the collection (or once was, I don't see it much anymore).

You're right though. Criterion can release anything they want for whatever reasons strike their fancy. Ultimately, people will buy, or they won't.

True enough. Then again, there is that whole 'one-eyed man in the land of the blind' angle to consider too.

Love Joe Dalek's new avatar. That would make for an interesting addition to the Criterion Collection IMHO. The original Wicker Man (1973) deserves a top notch special edition Blu-ray release.

I had the pleasure of seeing Le Havre this weekend. I think most here will like it and will want to purchase the blu when Criterion releases it later this year.

Also, Bazinga on my Le Samourai comment. You guys should know by now

I own all of the current BFI Ozu releases...those that are from Criterion DVDs:

Eclipse Series 3 - Late Ozu: Of the five films in that set...only Equinox Flower and Late Autumn have been released by BFI...both on BD. I am willing to wait for BFI to release Early Spring, Tokyo Twilight, and The End of Summer...which I think will all be released on blu.

Individual releases: The Only Son/There as a Father (Criterion) have already been released by BFI as supplements on two different releases. The Only Son (CC) on Late Spring (BFI) and There Was A Father (CC) on Equinox Flower (BFI). The Only Son on DVD only and There Was a Father on blu.

Tokyo Story was released by BFI on blu...along with Brothers and Sisters of the Toda Family on DVD only.

Early Summer was also released by BFI on blu...with the supplemental film What Did The Lady Forget (pre-war classic)...DVD only.

An Autumn Afternoon (blu) and A Hen in the Wind (DVD) which was mentioned earlier.

Good Morning (blu) and I Was Born...But (DVD only).

The only CC DVD set that hasn't seen a BFI blu treatment yet: Floating Weeds (1959...remake of) A Story of Floating Weeds (1934)... I expect these two within the next year or so.

There is a DVD set coming out in February of silent comedies that CC has not released called The Student Comedies.

Thanks for writing this up.
I can't help thinking these BFI's is the way to go, because you get a second film as an extra. It's the same with a couple of the Eureka/MoC films, like Pigs and Battleships, which comes with a second Imamura film, Stolen Desire. That's hard to pass up.
Plus, it's a surprise it has taken Criterion this long to release one Ozu on blu-ray.

Black Sun was kind of weird and I felt it was really racist but still enjoyable. I have The Warped Ones on my que on Hulu next so looking forward to that. After I'm gonna start watching some Oshima. Think ill watch Pleasures of the Flesh first. Is that a good one to start with?
I liked The Warped Ones a lot more than Black Sun. Loved Intimidation as well.
I started my Oshima set with Pleasures of the Flesh and I've watched them in order. I probably liked Pleasures... the most, but then again, it has the most accessible and traditional narrative. I've still got one more to go to finish the set...

What Beta Man said -- Paramount actually produced the edition and then basically made a branding agreement with Criterion to give it some cachet. That's why it's in a conventional Blu-ray case and often sells for typical major studio Blu-ray prices.
Yeah, I picked it up last week for $10 USD brand new I like the film never the less

I don't know anyone else noticed, but Criterion tweeted a link about Throne of Blood with the comment that it was released in Japan 55 years ago. Could be a clue...

I'm looking to finally pick up 'M' but I'm not sure to pick up the Criterion or the MoC version? I thought I asked this question but I spent the last 20 minutes going through the thread and couldn't find it. I looked at the DVD Beaver comparison and I'm sorta looking at the MoC version. I have a region free player so thats not a problem.....please help

+1

It's one of my favorite horror films and long overdue for a Blu-Ray release.

It's interesting that you call The Wicker Man a "horror" film. Christopher Lee reminisced once in an interview that the director proclaimed half way through production that they were making a musical.
