It's the same reason why people would get black bars on their old "square" tube tvs when watching a movie that's in the aspect ratio of 1.75:1, but now that same aspect ratio will fill up the entire screen of your widescreen tv.

As long as the film's original aspect ratio is preserved, it's all good.

Thanks ccfixx and scorsetinogilliam. Do you think this movie has improved over the dvd version?

Oh, by the way. Someone is getting rid of a huge load of Criterion Laserdiscs on eBay. I've bid on a lot of them (and I will probably regret letting everyone know), but there are a lot of good cheap discs over there now.

Merry Christmas everyone.
Who in the heck want's laserdiscs? I have bin of over 100 of those things and there about to take a trip to the curb if I cant get rid of them for a cheap and fair price!

Oh, definitely... if not for the DTS-HD MA soundtrack, the film grain is more resolved making the appearance much more film-like to me.

I have 3 or 4 LDs that I've never been able to get on DVD, and when I was getting within a couple of years of finally getting around to dubbing them to DVD from the LDs, the ole LD player bit the dust. Those lovely Missing Persons music videos just sitting there, can't play them any more (that's what I was playing when the LD player crapped out, matter of fact).

Guess I should get around to dubbing my remaining VHS-only tapes to DVD before that player bites the dust. Maybe next week

Time for my yearly scan to see what's been released on disc this year... seems like something or other shows up that wasn't available the previous year.

I have the 400 blows and Last Year at Marienbad blu-rays in cardbord cases. I was planning on ordering Bottle Rocket, The Man Whow Fell to Earth, Chunking Express, The Last Metro, The Complete Monterey Pop Festival and Pierre Le Fou when they are available in clear cases. I wanted to hold off on ordering clear cases for the 400 blows and Last Year at Marienbad in case I reciever one or more of these titles above arrive in cardbord case. Now that there is a rumor the 400 blows is oop, should i order clear case for it right away?

Monterey Pop and Pierrot Le Fou were never available in the cardboard cases.... so no reason to wait on those.

People who want films and don't want to pay a lot for oop titles and the are a few Criterion films that were released on LD and have not been released on DVD since. I just won Criterion's Tokyo Olympiad on LD for $11. Sure I would love to have owned the oop Criterion DVD (and would even hope it would be out on BD) but I'm not going to pay over $90-100 for it.

Hopefully it is just an out of stock issue, I definitely want to pick these up..
Ordered Seventh Seal 12/10 and the status still shows as "not shipped".

I asked Amazon why it was showing as discontinued while the Criterion site was listing it as available.

The reply:

"We have learned that the item 'The Seventh Seal (Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray] (1957)' is now back-ordered, and our supplier has not been able to let us know exactly when they expect to have more in stock. If you have not received a shipment confirmation by December 31, please contact us again"

In addition to these above reasons. Ld offers uncompressed pcm tracks opposed to very lossy dolby digital 2.0 on many criterion dvds. a good mastered LD(criterion ones are usually very good) picture quality is almost as good as a non-anamorphic dvds picture quality(most early criterion dvds were not anamorphic). Most concert, documentary etc.. material is stored in analog ntsc therefore they are forever locked into ntsc quality. LD picture is as close as you can get to highest possible ntsc picture quality. if the studio did a good job and mastered it well(like gimmer shelter) BD or DVD can surpass LD picture but on a good LD setup(high end LD player + video processor) you can beat many concert dvds with ld versions.

For me uncompressed lossless audio is enough reason to buy LDs. LD was the choice of videophiles long before homevideo market picked up so a small studio like criterion could buy the rights for big movies (i dont mean best but mainstream) like armageddon, silence of the lambs, dr.no and many more. these titles are on dvd(none-criterion) now with much less supplements, lossy audio, different or no commentary tracks. Also unaltered versions of E.T, Star Wars 1 and 4-6(even 1997 special editions) and many more blockbusters are not available on dvds.

It has nothing about being badass...it's about those of us who are proud owners and longtime followers of Criterion titles. There are those of us who spend our money into Criterion titles and even to this day...in LD, DVD and BD.

Especially if you are auteur-driven which I know many Criterion owners are, why deny yourself from many awesome films from these directors if they may not be released on BD ever or for many years.

Yes, there is some nice supplements on LD that never made it over to DVD, but particularily with the Criterion's you also get some of those great essays etc. Monty Python's Holy Grail from Criterion is superb.
