My disc has the Tony Rayns commentary. I have the slip cover version. Not sure if there are different versions or not. But it's listed on the back of the slip and you can access it by selecting commentary on disc.

Commentary i have. *Documentary* (which is what the review mentions), i do not. I'm guessing the reviewer meant to write commentary and typed documentary instead?

The two Fullers come after 1962, which seems to be the cut-off point between film-noir and neo-noir. So they may be neo-noir.

Here's a list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_film_noir_titles

I'm fully aware what film noir is and what its basic elements are. Don't need a link to a "starting point"

I'm especially excited to see The Exile since it's the only title of those playing that I haven't seen and don't own.

There are other people in this thread besides you who might need that starting point. We can't all be experts, and it's clear from the past weekend, that only a handful in this thread are obviously. Excuse me for trying to be helpful to the other "non-experts" in this thread.

I'm disappointed that I can't watch Caught and Letter From an Unknown Woman. I'm PVRing the rest though.

Your post appeared to be directed at me specifically. I guess that's the internet.

I quoted you because you were the most recent post in the discussion on film noir.

Anyone else checking out the Ophuls films tonight?

Anyone bother to order The Moment of Truth? No one really seems to talk about that one at all.

See my post on how TCM Canada are being jerks and subbing them out for The Two Mrs. Carrolls and Chain Lightning.

Incidentally that review also discusses the Timeline functionality that Criterion puts on their Blu-rays. Does anyone actually use Timeline? I use it sometimes instead of the chapter selection, or to toggle to the commentary while watching, but I don't use the bookmarking features. I've always felt the Timeline feature renders the Chapter Selection feature pointless, so I wonder why they even bother with both.
I never really understood the point of the timeline but I've never used bookmarking either. To be honest, I'm not even sure what - if anything - it does.

As for why have both - they can't just omit chapter selection. Even people (like me) who almost never use them would squalk so I would think it's either drop the timeline or do both.

I'm a little disappointed that B&N hasn't shipped my copies of Belle de Jour or Godzilla. I guess I can wait since I got them at the sale price. They are also both upgrades -- Belle de Jour from the Studio Canal BD and Godzilla from the BFI DVD. Still, I have to say I really like Criterion's packaging for both.

Also, I finally watched Black Narcissus last night. Great film. It's almost hard to believe it came out in the 40s.

I don't think I've ever used the timeline. Not even sure where it would be useful.

I saw TINY FURNITURE on netflix instant, can't believe you were all so hard on it. It is a crazy impressive achievement, of writing/directing, especially for someone that young. far better than the other women/filmmakers of this ilk (Lisa Cholodenko, Nicole Holefcener, Miranda July etc)

Can't you see the hypocrisy in your words though?

"A movie about boxing? I'll never see that!"

"A movie by someone who doesn't like Godfather? I'll never see that!"

Take TF on its own, and it is wonderful, a scarily confident film full of strong dialogue and real characters. I would take it any day over 'cool'/nihilistic pseudo-cinema that has been trendy for the last twenty years... I think many people have a problem that a young woman has made a film, and that she is opinionated. That is what all the snarkiness against it comes down to IMO

edit: most people dont even care to view classics until they are in their 30's/40's, it is like wine. maybe it is better to be out there and experience life first instead of be glued to the screen, there's no one way to go through life

I don't think B&N ever ships a new release before it's release date.

I never and I mean never have any of my pre-orders ship early. I think I will start a rumor that it's because I live in Quebec

I can't wait to have a look at Godzilla. The other release was such a mess compared with this one.
