Sadly I think that is the truth. Amazon.ca seems to limit certain film sales there. Don't feel bad though, Nova Scotia isn't well liked either at the best of times either. Stepher Harper has a huge hate on for us.

Take TF on its own, and it is wonderful, a scarily confident film full of strong dialogue and real characters. I would take it any day over 'cool'/nihilistic pseudo-cinema that has been trendy for the last twenty years... I think many people have a problem that a young woman has made a film, and that she is opinionated. That is what all the snarkiness against it comes down to IMO

edit: most people dont even care to view classics until they are in their 30's/40's, it is like wine. maybe it is better to be out there and experience life first instead of be glued to the screen, there's no one way to go through life
This is why you will never be a "film expert." You point out when the actual experts are being hypocrites, watch entire films before you give your opinions on them, and don't actually care what your director thinks about other films and/or about his/her appearance. Also, you don't just watch "classic cinema." Don't feel bad though, I'm not a film expert either because I can't live up to those standards either. </snark>

I'm watching my PVR of The Black Cat, with Bela Lugosi, and I totally forgot that Head samples a few scenes from it. The Head soundtrack also samples some audio from it too.

Well I have notice that Amazon.ca as usually next to the Criterion movies as new releases NOT AVAILABLE IN QUEBEC but they always ship. I think they do this mostly since there is no French language track or even in French but they always ship them

Ah. I never knew that. I think it's silly to limit the sales to Quebec anyways if they actually did enforce it. I'm pretty sure Quebec has some English unilingual residents.

Criterion posted something on Facebook about Jules and Jim. Think this means an upgrade announcement coming soon?

I'm still waiting for packages containing The Lady Vanishes and the two Suzuki films that were shipped on the 7th and 12th of December. Ridiculous.

The bridge on the Godzilla BD fold out looks like the Sydney Harbour bridge doesn't it?

I wasn't aware that Godzilla made his way that far south.

I truly, truly, TRULY hope so. With a cherry on top.

On Truffaut, I would think [/B]/The Soft Skin should be coming soon since Janus toured a new print last year. Perhaps they'll release it the same month the inevitable Weekend upgrade will be coming? Tirez-sur la Pianiste needs an upgrade as well.

They posted about it's anniversary. They do this to alot of things. Doesn't mean anything but what they wrote about it.

Are there any films in the Criterion Collection that would be considered "gothic"?

First of all, that's a silly term to bestow upon a film. I hope no one does this.

Secondly, and more importantly, what aspect of the term "gothic" are you specifically asking about when it comes to film? Atmosphere? Architecture? Soundtrack? Girls with fishnet sleeves that have black eyeliner and lipstick?

Are there certain films that are already considered "gothic"? I must be completely unaware of this genre, if so. Are there films in your mind that you could relate to the term?

That's a really general term. If, by gothic, you mean dark, I would say Antichrist might be the darkest film I've ever seen.

Speaking of Truffaut. Do you need to watch 400 blows before you watch Stolen Kisses? Is there a connection between the two or is it just the same character?

Silly community college Lit class.
I was considering doing it on The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, because I've always wanted to see that film, and I noticed earlier today it's actually on Netflix.

Edit * Someone is doing a Harry Potter film, and the teacher has agreed that it fits as "gothic".

Just rent Ken Russel's "Gothic", about Mary Shelley and Lord Byron. Even the title says it all.

I think he means a certain kind of horror with romance aspects (not Twilight). Arguably, a lot of the Edgar Allen Poe adaptations Vincent Price did are considered Gothic, at least IMHO. Gothic isn't just those kids with the eyeliner and fishnets. That's a stereotype.

Night of the Hunter easily falls into a Gothic sub-type, Southern Gothic, which is one of my favourite literary genres.

These are some "Gothic" Criterions, or at least fall under my definition of a gothic film:
The already mentioned night of the Hunter
Rebecca is OOP on DVD, but it's Gothic
Beauty and the Beast
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Great Expectations
The Red Shoes
Black Narcissus
Diabolique
The Magician

those are just the first few off the top of my head, and not all are out on BD.

German Expressionism, not "gothic," but there's definitely a style there that many would identify with the term today.

This was my first thought as well before I posted my semi-a-hole, semi-serious response.
