I actually did watch it right after I viewed Eyes and it was incredibly interesting. I'm glad I saw it. I honestly don't have a hard time watching stuff like that, but I thought it was a great addition as a special feature.

Havent seen anyone talking about The Moment of Truth? Maybe I missed it somewhere along the lines since I sometimes miss a day or 2 checking this thread which can be alot of pages that I don't always go back and read.

Anyhow, watched it a week ago, total blind buy, and liked it way more than I thought I was going to. I thought it would be an interestitng movie, but for me it ended up being more than that. The ending was somewhat predictable, but regardless this movie fascinated me for some reason. I didn't know what the meaning of The Moment of Truth was, actually didn't know it HAD a meaning in the sense of bullfighting. Very interesting material and well made movie.

Holy crow. Has anyone here seen Altman's 3 Women? I just watched it on Netflix instant, and was kinda blown away. It's an epically odd, pre-Lynchian drama starring Sissy Spacek and Shelley Duvall. Mulholland Dr by way of Carrie, if you will -- a must for fans of both.

It was a pseudo rip of Bergman's Persona, only without the same level of craftsmanship and symbolism. Still a pretty good film with some great moments.

Persona's great too -- You know, I didn't even consider the similarity.

I saw eyes without a face recently as well and thought it was great as well. I saw that and The testament of Dr Mabuse back to back. I was pretty creeped out all night. Id also recommend Sisters same type of creepiness.

I've had a reply as well, but mentioned nothing about not sending them back, even though I'm in Australia. (Not that I mind.)
Here's the correspondence:
"Hi Jon,
I’m just following up on this email, since I wanted to send back both White and Carlos at the same time.
Is the Carlos replacement disc now available?"

"Hi,
The CARLOS discs are not ready yet. You can go ahead and send in your discs and we will send you a replacement WHITE disc right away, and the CARLOS as soon as they are ready. Thank you for your patience while we are sorting out this audio issue! Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns, and thank you for supporting Criterion!
Best,
Jon"

Hi Wildcat,

You should also see Manolete. The subject is very similar, as the title suggests. It is a much more elegant film than The Moment of Truth, though not a better one.

The Moment of Truth -- Gianni Di Venanzo, who lensed a small portion of the film, was a legendary cinematographer, probably one of the best to work in Italy after the war. Fellini, Antonioni, Massell, and Monicelli loved him. Aside from the big films he lensed - , Le Amiche, Il grido, La notte, and L' Eclisse - he also did some small but absolutely stunning films. For example, Maselli's Abandoned, with Antonioni's favorite Lucia Bosé. It is not on Blu-ray yet, but the Italian DVD is excellent. Every scene in this film is brilliant.

The Moment of Truth is a terrific film and a great release by Criterion, my favorite this year.
Now we need Rosi's La sfida.

Agreed. I'll never understand why the old posters for classics are rarely used as cover art by major studios for blu-ray releases. Instead, we get a star or two on the front plus some snazzy photoshop graphics.

We cannot hate too much on it. The film works quite well as a coaster.

No it doesn't. I actually watch Drive, He Said, and it shares the disc with that film. Criterion knew that very few people would enjoy it, and/or Drive, He Said, hence them sharing a disc.

As I said, the film deserves far more hate than the other film that people hate.

How many people here have even attempted to watch A Safe Place?

We can hate on it as much as we want. As I said, it's more deserving of hate than the other film. Jaglom is a horrible hack, and a certain director who shall not be named seems to have far more talent than he does.

I've yet to get to the extras on A SAFE PLACE but I'm reading they are quite amusing because Jaglom is under the impression his film is not a piece of crap.

Other than that I can't think of anything I really dislike.

There are several I haven't watched yet (Benjamin Button being one of them) and a handful I didn't exactly love (Howards End, House, Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence) but I can't really think of anything that's generated any serious buyer's remorse let alone any 'omg, wtf was I thinking'.

(If I had to pick one least favorite standalone I would probably give Howards End the nod over House because I still haven't finished House)
Which Welles? Seeing as there's two in the film, do you mean Gwen, or Orson?

You obviously haven't heard anything from Jaglom then. He's a hack: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0415617/

Howard's End is awesome, as is Hausu. Of course, I like EM Forster novels, and the subsequent film adapataions. I've got A Passage to India on PVR right now, as I haven't watched it in a few years, and TCM had it on last Friday. Hausu is just so batshiat insane, it's awesome.

Most of his films are pieces of crap. Look at his IMDB profile I posted, the highest rating he's received on any film has been 6.6/10, most are in the low 6s and 5s, with the last 3 or 4 films being in the 3s and 4s. A Safe Place isn't even his worst, it was his first though.

As an absolute nut for samurai films, I thought it was right up there with some of the best. I saw it online a few months back when Criterion first announced it, and immediately loved it. I thought it was close to a masterpiece. If you love the samurai film, as I most certainly do, then it is a an absolute blind-buy. I can't wait to see it again when my own copy comes in next week.

Glad to hear that...as I know those of you that live beyond the US borders don't have it easy with getting things shipped from Criterion directly.

The main reason I don't put Howards End in the buyers remorse category is because I'm fairly certain I will one day come to agree. I don't know exactly what my expectations were but I know they were heavily formed by Remains of the Day and the like. I was also in a fairly virulent anti-HBC phase (that has since largely passed) which couldn't have helped.

I've been half itching to revisit it over the past few weeks and I have a feeling I'll be scratching that itch before long.
