Yes Pat...that's the one. Yeah...it's over $180 US. "Repast" and "Sound of the Mountain" both star Setsuko Hara (of Ozu fame)...I really enjoyed these films and it's a shame that the fire has driven up the price of this set.

The BFI Naruse boxset is still being printed, so it's still reasonably priced. It's also a pretty good set of films on it's own accord and includes "When a Woman Ascends the Stairs", same as the Criterion release.

I really like the MoC set, my favorite being the Sound of the Mountain. I got it a few months before the warehouse fire after putting it off for about a year.
However, the BFI set is great too! My favorite out of that set is Late Chrysanthemums. It stars Haruko Sugimura (Tokyo Story as well as a plethora of other great Japanese films) as a woman obsessed with her money. It is too bad these sets did not sell well because MoC and BFI are unlikely to put out more of Naruse's films. That is probably why the MoC is selling for so much (that and the short book included with the release is lovely).

I wonder how well the Silent Naruse set sold?

Speaking of directors who don't sell well - I wonder how The Music Room sold. Abhijan has been out of print for a while but MoC still has it for sale despite being down to "one box" almost 2 years ago. Hopefully the Apu Trilogy comes out soon.

Though I really love both sets...I give the slight edge to the MoC set and I absolutely agree with Sound of the Mountain...it's my favorite from both of the sets. I bought the MoC set a year or so ago when Kevin hooked me up with one for something under $20.

Also agreed on Late Chrysanthemums, which I like even more than "When a Woman..." That I was also very lucky with, as two members of this very same forum, alerted me to a price drop on it, that Amazon UK was running at that time.

As far as the Silent Naruse...I think it sold pretty well, as there is unfortunately a drought of Naruse titles available on disc. Maybe we'll get lucky and BFI will tackle a Naruse collection, after they finish releasing all of the Ozu films.

My Masters of Cinema/Eureka edition turned up the other day and I'm pretty excited to finally see it...
My feeling is, I don't care if it's Criterion or MoC as long as its a quality transfer in a nice package.

You won't be disappointed doc...it's more than even I expected. I had never seen it before and besides the fact that it's a great first effort by Melville...it looks simply wonderful on Blu. Major kudos to Masters of Cinema!

I may well place the order. Skipping a few other things and getting them later and go for this one.

One movie I would really like to have and was only available in region 2 (which I did not know since I did not lurk in DVD forums back in the days) is Oyû-sama by Kenji Mizoguchi. It was release by Masters Of Cinema. It's only available from sellers on Amazon.uk. What I am wondering (if anyone might know) is it actually possible to get something from a seller on Amazon.uk? I believe sellers on Amazon.ca do not send orders outside of Canada, so I wonder if it's the same there?

Just a few days away from the May slate and I was wondering which upgrades we might get. In your opinion, which ones do you think are the most likely ?

I don't think I will make predictions this month. I make them with what I want to have and not enough objectivity

Some of the sellers on Amazon.UK do ship outside the UK but It seems like most don't. I always add to my cart and then see if I get the error message that states something like "the seller you have chosen does not ship to the address you selected". I did however buy a Region B blu from an Amazon.UK seller a few weeks ago so I know it's *possible* (I'm in the US)

Hey Pat...if I read you correctly, you're going for the MoC Naruse boxset? If so...Congrats! If you mean the BFI boxset, you'll love it just as much.

Sorry I can't help you with the Mizoguchi sellers...but I've decided to hold off on that UK Mizoguchi blu boxset until the price drops a bit and will take the plunge into the two films that MoC is releasing in the near future...

I've had mixed experience with 'sellers' on Amazon UK. Keep in mind that if it states 'will ship International' they still might not ship to US as International shipping to them is shipping to Wales and Ireland, not off 'the island'

Have they actually ever used that as an excuse?!

I look at the list of sellers, some offer the international delivery but I don't know, I am still not sure on ordering or not.

Yeah, I would go with the Naruse set from MoC. I figured if I just push back on a few other things I wanted to order, I can cover the $175 expense. It's a bit high for three movies but I really enjoy Naruse movies so I can sort of tell myself it's not so bad

Good for you! It's a great set of films and you will enjoy them. Do you own the BFI set? If not, it's available for about $30 US, sans the shipping. I like it a very small notch below the MoC set, but another great set of films nonetheless.

I have no idea what plans BFI has for continuing to release it, but if you're as big a fan of Naruse as me, I'd hate to see you either have to pay a high price for it somewhere down the road...or worse...not be able to find it anywhere.

Two UK and one US boxset is all that exists for his films...it's pretty sad...

I still hold some hope that Criterion will release "When a Woman..." on blu, as it's the only one I don't own (as it's included on the BFI set)...

Well we know for sure Summer with Monika and Being John Malkovich is being announced. I saw Being John Malkovich a long time ago and didn't think much of it. Oh well, some people seem to be excited for it. What I wish would be announced is Weekend, The Cranes are Flying and/or any Kurosawa.

Perhaps May is a month where Criterion will upgrade some titles that have been released in other territories.

Picnic at Hanging Rock
Great Expectations / Oliver Twist (I'm surprised they didn't release them earlier in the year, being Dickens' bicentenary and all)
The River
Jules et Jim
Spirit of the Beehive
Boudu Saved From Drowning
Le Samourai
Eyes Without a Face
The Burmese Harp
Bicycle Thieves
Murmur of the Heart

Any of them could be be announced, take your pick.

Has there been any speculation on when Y Tu Mama Tambien will see the light of day? I'd like to grab that at the next B&N sale. I'd likewise love to see Ace in the Hole, Brazil, Ikiru, and more get the blu-ray bump. And as always, my pie-in-the-sky wish is for Koyaanisqatsi.
