Really? That may be better than the 50% of deal, since they took half off the retail price.

Its not. They charge $40 per Criterion so you would pay 80 for 3 instead of 60 during the half off sale.

This is a must buy for me but not sure about people on here since many are focused on collecting Criterion Blu-ray only.

I must say, Rosselinis films are generally in pretty bad shape. Have the film-masters not been taken care off over the years?

Even Fritz Langs films from the 30s are in better shape.

has anyone here seen the Hamlet and Henry V blu-rays compared to the criterion versions. I want both of these but cant imagine Criterion remastering them for blu any time soon. I know dvd beaver compared them and the blu releases blow the Criterions out of the water. I guess my question is, how many people here would buy a criterion version of a film when a better edition exists just for the sake that it is a criterion to add to their collection?

VERY interesting question posed there, and while twisting your intent, I come close to an answer : DO THE RIGHT THING. Now that I know that 99% of the time that Blu is superior to DVD, in this case, I already spent $ 22.00 a year ago tomorrow ( oddly enough ), and so even though the Blu reviews are very high here...that's an expensive double-dip I'm not willing to make.
So...in THIS case...Criterion in the hand means more than a Blu in the bush.

BUT ! I only went Blu in October.
I HAVE been known to spend " ridiculous " amounts on recordings attributed to either Duane Allman, or Ronnie Van Zant. It's all personal choice.
WINGS OF DESIRE seems like a no-brainer on Criterion Blu, as was BENJI BUTTON.

Thats not right. The B&N 50% off criterion sale takes 50% off the MSRP of $40. the buy 2 get 1 free are the B&N online price of $31 each ($28 each if you are a member).

so you can get 3 criterions shipped with this sale for practically the same price ($60). Not Too bad if you're one of the people that do not want to wait for the next 50% off sale

well im not really talking about the new releases where they release some on blu and some on dvd. Of course you would go with a blu then. But im talking about other titles like Hamlet, Henry V, Salo, Black Narcissus and im sure there are others, where there is a superior PQ edition available.

I know PQ is not everything, when it comes to Criterion, packaging and extras are not to be overlooked, for instance Salo, better quality on BFI but packaging just looks so much better on criterion......sorry off topic.

I love Criterion, even thought about getting the Rock but got it on blu just because the PQ was that much better and the extras were pretty close.

But I just cant seem to pull the trigger on getting Hamlet and Henry V criterion editions because I know there are truly better editions out there. I dont have a region B player and those two titles are region locked, so I guess im holding out for Criterion to reissue them on blu, or for another company to get a region free or A release sometime soon.

So in cases like this, would other people get the criterion because it is a criterion or would they wait?

Yeah, I don't think the BN sale is bad for Criterions. For normal DVDs and BDs, yeah not so great - even the member price at BN can be quite high. But stores like Best Buy and Target rarely if ever stock Criterions, and even when they do the prices are close to MSRP and there are never sales. For Criterions, BN is actually fairly competitive. So Buy-2-Get-1-Free is not bad at all - I'm thinking of doing 8 1/2, Che, and Rosselini War Trilogy. Was going to buy all 3 anyway, and now I get 8 1/2 for free.

Well, in my case, because I have a region-free blu-ray player, I'm going to go for those imported blu-ray releases of films that are already released on standard DVD by Criterion. However, I'm also likely to keep my Criterion DVD after the fact just for any differing supplemental content. Some things I'm on the fence about, though. I haven't picked up the Region-B release of "The Red Shoes" because I know Criterion's going to release it sooner or later. The same thing goes for Masters Of Cinema's upcoming blu-ray of "M"... I'll hold off until Criterion gets around to releasing their version and see how the differences, if any, stack up. I keep holding off on "The Decameron," "Arabian Nights," and "The Canterbury Tales," too, because I keep reading that Criterion's working on them for an unknown future release.

Indeed.

Just ordered Che, Paris Texas, 8 1/2, Gimme Shelter, Christmas Tale and Gomorrah for 3$ more than the usual 50% sale (with 25% off)

It's a Barnes & Noble sale but during the last one Amazon matched their prices, though I'm not sure if they matched all of them.
