That I can see yes, the way it's filmed does look a bit corny. I think it's probably due to limitation of what they could actually do maybe?

It just seemed to come out of nowhere, and came across as a bit corny to me. Oh well.
I'm ashamed that out of all the films I've seen, I never caught Friedken's remake. I was waiting for it to come out in widescreen but I'm wondering f it ever will. |

So, speaking of things non-Criterion, there's a couple of Atom Egoyan films coming to blu-ray in Canada: Exotica and The Sweet Hereafter.
They'll be released by Alliance - can we hope for good transfers? Don't they have a reputation for mediocre blu-rays? I think they did an early edition of Se7en in the wrong aspect ratio in 1080i... Personally, Exotica is at the absolute top of my wishlist, so I'm hoping a decent edition comes out somewhere... |

The Sweet Hereafter is one of my favorite movies, so a BD upgrade would be great. Kind of pissed I spent more than $20 on the DVD less than a year ago, though. Damn thing is still $26.49 on Amazon.

I'm sure it's been said before (newcomer to this thread), but I wish Criterion would spend less time upgrading in-print DVDs, and focus more on stuff that doesn't have a current, domestic DVD release, e.g. Robbe-Grillet's L'homme qui ment. This way more people (the folks who can't afford to import it from Italy and/or speak French/Italian) could be seeing these films instead of, say, having to watch a sub-par, illegally downloaded copy on their laptop.

You are my new fav poster. Love your Fassbinder get-up. I also agree with your request of Alain Robbe-Grillet.

Looks like at least one Canadian poster will be thrilled about this review...

And the one Universal title that they should have KILLED to get..."All Quiet on the Western Front". I watched it Saturday morning and as much as some have said that Universal screwed too much with "grain management"...from what I've read about how the film looked before restoration, it looks simply amazing! And I know that maybe I would have seen more "flaws" if I wasn't viewing it on a 50" plasma...but my Kuro Elite is usually quite good at seeing all of the wrinkles in transfers. Maybe they could have done a better job, but major kudos to Universal on one hell of a restoration!

Anatomy of a Murder (as well as Twilight Time's Rapture, from Fox), should be required viewing for anyone involved in bringing big studio black and white to Blu, especially spherical widescreen or anamorphic 'scope titles. I hope Criterion does very well with this release, and it encourages them to take a harder look at what they've been settling for with some of their recent black and white releases*. * Like the bafflingly over-praised make-do work for Criterion's 12 Angry Men. No major studio American black and white film from the late 50s looked that simultaneously fuzzy and grungy. Last edited by ROclockCK; 02-19-2012 at 04:58 PM. |

BG has been raving about this since it was announced, so I know she'll be squirming around in anticipation until Tuesday's release. ![]() I've actually never seen it before...but I knew of it's reputation, so I anticipated a win/win...looking forward to seeing it. |
