Criterion Cast said it was Spaulding Gray.
Extremely late, since it's been out on BD in the BBS box set since November 2010. Quote:
Also, the film has only been mentioned several times throughout this thread, especially in the past week or so by both Shell and I, while discussing A Safe Place, since it happens to share the BD disc with that "film." Just finished watching The Last Metro from TCM PVR, and it looks like I have another Criterion to add to my list, although it's not a pressing one like World on a Wire, or Letter Never Sent. ![]() |

[Show spoiler] ...at least that's how it hit me the first time around. This would have been early 60s at an all-night summer drive-in, and I still recall the shrieks and squeals across that lot. Never before or since in motion picture history has one pendulous lightbulb had such a startling effect. What's fascinating about the second half of Psycho though, is that Hitchcock purposely violated his own cardinal rule about suspense...i.e. intentionally giving the audience information to make them squirm in their seats, rather than startling them with "ooga-booga" surprises. In his famous series of interviews with Truffaut, his justification for that surprise seemed to turn on the fact that during the [Show spoiler] ...using that scene and its aftermath more like an ironic coda or epilogue to everything that had preceded it.I agree though, even after you do know the ending of Psycho, there's still considerable "tension" - plus a lot of inky black humour - in the 'cat and mouse' events of the second half, especially in the scenes with Arbogast. It's just no longer the same kind of suspense - there's not even any surprise left - because unfortunately you can never untwist the twist. Which is why Hitchcock hated that device so much. ![]() ![]() - Pasolini's Trilogy of Life which has been "hinted" by that bow in the New Year's Drawing (Can't be sure, really, I hope it IS what they were trying to hint ![]() - Apu Trilogy has been semi-confirmed for a 2013 release. - Spalding Gray box-set rumored above. - Wim Wender's Road Trilogy which has been heavily hinted at. - BRD Trilogy which is most likely going to be re-issued this year (I am REALLY looking forward to this) - Koker Trilogy just because I really REALLY hope they get to release it. Probably my most "wished" release thus far. |

But if it is a blu-ray box set, I really really hope it includes The Killing Fields. Not likely though, I'm not sure what Criterion's chances are of getting that one since it belongs to Warner Brothers, if I am not mistaken. Still, it would make a nice symmetry with Swimming to Cambodia and the upcoming Being John Malkovich. |

Given the speed discrepancy with this particular film, this was the right way to encode the film. Pro-B Last edited by pro-bassoonist; 02-23-2012 at 03:02 AM. |

I am unsure what player you have (could you let me know), but most BD players have a "video format" or "source" button on their remote. So if you press it, you should be able to immediately tell what the player outputs, i or p.
![]() Edit: And one more thing, hopefully I am not misunderstanding you, but yes, you could have most players set to output "direct", not convert to 1080p. Last edited by pro-bassoonist; 02-23-2012 at 03:16 AM. |

If you could also find a way to see The Forty-first, do so. It is also lensed by Sergei Urusevsky and complimented by another beautiful score by Nikolai Kryukov. ![]() ![]() ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us Pro-B |

Hitchcock had a...[*cough*]...'cheeky' side, and seemed particularly...[*cough* *cough*]...'fixated' on that movie first - even to the extent of...[*ahem* *wheeze* *snort*]...'proudly' showing it off via his "Tour of the Bates Motel" trailer.

I can't stand silent films, but I was totally charmed and mesmerised by People On Sunday. Maybe it was because none of the cast were professionals, and they were very natural actors - the main thing that puts me off silent films is the exaggerated, hammy acting.
I'd say People On Sunday was the perfect silent if you don't like silent movies. |

Well, 1) that was the first time a toilet had been sown in films or TV, so yeah, at the time it was a big deal. And shocking. It was also, naturally, the first time a toilet had been flushed on TV or movies. 2) It wasn't at Hitchcock's insistence that a toilet be shown, it was writer Joseph Stefano's. He asked Hitch if they could show it, and Hitch replied, "write it in so its integral to the story." So Stefano wrote the scene where Marion has to flush the evidence, making the toilet something that couldn't be cut, and the censors really didn't object too much.

I take silent films for what they are — simply, the truest form of cinema, told visually with little to no "dialogue." The acting was just trying to convey wordless drama, albiet over done. |
