I caught that too. Still the closest match I've seen, though.

Well, these hints aren't always the entire frame, just a small portion of the frame...they say nothing about the overall transfer

Awesome! I liked Shallow Grave. Early Danny Boyle.

Well I guess that confirms *that* New Year's clue, then.

Hoping for an upgrade to either Mamet's "Homicide" or "House of Games"

Saw Shallow Grave when I was younger. Didn't think much of it then. Pretty much felt the same way about Being John Malkovich. Im willing to give it another shot. Will probably pick it up during the BN sale.

My immediate reaction was 'damn, why can't Criterion release these' followed by a bewildered pause during which I wondered why I was reacting so negatively to some very good news.

I'm still not overwhelmed by much of the Criterion slate this year but I no longer look at that as quite the Bad Thing anymore. Would I rather they upgraded their catalog? Sure. But as long as somebody's doing it - and doing it reasonably well - then I'm not sure there's all that much of a downside.

And hey, if this frees up time and resources to poach more of the Columbia catalog...

The only thing that really bothers me about it is that I am going to have a bunch of Region B blu-rays that will collect dust if my Oppo ever dies. Then again, I will have a bunch of blu-rays collecting dust if my Oppo dies. That will be a sad day. Viking Funeral on Lake Michigan!

That's true, that's a good point. I've only had a region free player for a few months and I'm already blithely assuming that's a complete non-issue.

As recently as two weeks ago I thought we were nuts for even talking about Fail-Safe but it doesn't seem that crazy anymore. I'm thinking 50/50 before the end of the year.

I would be thrilled if Criterion released L'Avventura I was just in rapture seeing it . Red Desert (own) & Blowup enthralled me as well & Zabriskie Point to a very lesser degree. Could anyone really recommend me buying Identification of a Woman? Which of his other films does it look and feel like?

Agreed. I'm not particularly excited by Criterion's slate this year either but it has given me occasion, like you, to check out other boutique labels like MoC, BFI, and Twilight, so it's a net positive. MoC for me has particularly picked up the slack with their releases this year in terms of my dollars spent.

Something that has never been uttered ever: I want Hopscotch upgraded. I know it is one of the "joke" Criterions, but I really love watching that movie. Maybe have Sam Waterstone to do a commentary.
