Their shipping is actually really reliable now. I preordered a few Kino titles a while a go and they actually came almost two weeks BEFORE the release date. Not saying thats going to happen but I think it's a testament to how good this company has become

I'd love Criterion to formally acknowledge the errors on Carlos and Three Colors, too, but I'm not holding my breath (besides, I get accused of having a vendetta against poor little Ma & Pa Criterion when I dare to mention it, or told that word of mouth on the internet about the replacement program is as good or better than a formal acknowledgment). They are at least doing the right thing with the disc replacements, if one contacts them rather than just returning the item to the retailer like most folks who don't waste inordinate amounts of time on internet forums are bound to do.

Ultimately, we're not getting another scan. Too expensive to go back and fix what many people won't notice is an error.

Quality control has been an increasing problem lately - and with a company of Criterion's stature, many would say just once is a 'problem': in the past few months there's Carlos, Blue, White, the mislabeled discs (that at least still play the correct film)...Something certainly needs to be remedied on the QC front.

I'm not sitting on any high horse. I have every right to like or not like anything I want. Not understand the meaning? I think it's safe to say that Days of Heaven had an amteurish script. Even supporters of the film admit to that. Usually I have to hear an earful about the pretty pictures and the symbolic meanings. I absolutely loved Badlands but Days of Heaven is not a good film...it's just a pretty one.

Having just finished Anatomy, I'm fairly certain these two are my favorite Criterion releases of 2012 so far (so far not including April/May releases that I'm interested in but haven't seen yet!)

I am not quibbling about the quality of the film and you have every right to hate it. However, it is not pretentious. It is not pretending to be anything. It is a piece of pastoral art and that is all it claims to be in a very overt manner. As a piece of pastoral art, it is actually marginally successful. Hence it is not pretentious. But it is O.K. you can get indignant over things I didn't actually say.

I wasn't irritated at all. I love having passionate discussions about whether people like or don't like a film. Don't take it as hostile in any way

Have you read the script? Because the script and the film are pretty different. Most everyone who knows about the film knows Malick wasn't happy with Gere's performance, so he cut much fo the dialogue in favor of the voiceover and the film he ended up with. So saying it's an "amteurish" script really holds no water here.

I've posted these pics on Criterions FB, and also emailed Mulvaney. They are supposedly "looking into it", but the problem lies in the fact that it wasn't Criterion's mistake — it was MK2's, who supplied the master to Criterion and AE. So it wold be a fix on MK2's part, then a further fix on Criterion's.

Surprisingly, no one is talking much about it. I've tried generating interest — its funny that a audio glitch on one rear channel causes an uproar, but when an entire film is mis-framed no one seems to care, lol.

I'll be more than happy to send an email as well. I think everyone who has the trilogy should do the same, because the more people ask, the more likely Criterion are to respond.

I agree, but in a case like this, what do they compare it to? Old DVDs? Artificial Eye also received the same master and also saw no issues, apparently. I don't think many would've noticed the issue if it weren't for a microphone dropping into frame. Why didn't they see this at Criterion? Who knows, maybe they did. They aren't putting forth any information regarding it (yet), so it's all speculation. It looks to be a (simple) case of scanning the whole negative, then someone adjusting the visible frame too low, which could happen for a number of reasons. IF MK2 still has the full frame scan, the fix is pretty easy, compared to making a whole new scan.

Just curious, have you seen Happiness, or did you go into Life During Wartime cold? I've only seen Happiness, and while it was well made and well acted, I definitely have no desire to own it or see it again. Just too creepy and depressing.
