Saturating the market probably won't be happening. If the demand isn't there, the studios eventually simply stop releasing titles. The sad thing is, most catalog titles aren't selling well. Why that is, really is beyond me, because older movies, given the right approach (like studios like Criterion and Sony give most titles) really show what HD does better than newer titles, in my opinion.

I wanted to post my usual comments about how Universal treats every older title as crap, but apparently To Kill a Mockingbird and the re-release of Out of Africa look very good. It's about time, really. So hopefully Dracula, Frankenstein and his Bride are given the treatment they deserve.

Yeah, Lone Star was sort of his critical and commercial "peak"... Sayles lost the Screenplay Oscar that year to Fargo, which both then and now looks pretty silly. Oh well. I had a 2 hour sit down with him and Maggie during their promotion of Men With Guns, back when I was a film critic. Very nice and smart guy, obviously.

There seem to be from what I hear around a perception that Blu-ray is wasted for older movies (even more so for B&W movies). People at work, here and there always telling me Blu-ray is just good the new releases and serve no purpose for the older movies. For myself I am just amaze how well Blu-ray make these old movie come alive like never before (or at least since they were first shown in theaters originaly). Also a lot of people just cannot get the pacing of older movies. This as nothing to do with age either, I know this guy in his 50s now and the simple idea to even watch a movie like The Great Dictator or Seven Samurai would give him headaches. Imagine now trying to make him watch something like Les Salaires De La Peur or L'Année dernière à Marienbad if he can't even digest something as easy as Seven Samurai?

If anyone has any experience with replacing discs through Criterion, please enlighten me.

I have had a freezing issue with two films now, Summer Hours and The Seventh Seal.

The problem I encounter is freezing at a certain point and resuming 5-7 minutes after the point. Both discs are flawless, not a fingerprint or a speck of dust on them. They both freeze at the same respective point in time on multiple players.

I have e-mailed Criterion and have not received a response yet. Does anyone know if they will replace the discs for me? One was purchased used here and The Seventh Seal was from Barnes and Noble (no receipt anymore).

Thanks for any input

I completely agree...it's one of the rare occasions where I watched every feature on the disc too...it indeed looks and sounds amazing. It was my first time watching the film, as well. Anatomy and Sweet Smell of Success are probably the best-looking B&W films I can think of on blu-ray.

Great lists. I only have a few more than 5 C titles, but I guess my top 5 would be...

Modern Times, Sweet Smell of Success, Bigger than Life, Red Shoes, Seventh Seal, Blow Out...6, oh well...

Billy Wilder would probably be my favorite but Kubrick is a close second and definitely has a better slugging percentage.

I can think of several Wilder films I'm kind of 'meh' towards but Kubrick has hit nothing but home runs. The first time I saw Eyes Wide Shut I though 'ground rule double at best' but I've even come around on that.

Just off the top of my head Seven Samurai and The Third Man would have to at least be part of that conversation.

It's hard to decide...I'd go with Jodorowsky and Almodovar. Now that Octagon mentions it...Billy Wilder would be one of my top 5 as well.

Sam Peckinpah (those paying close attention might have figured that out without me saying.)

It goes without saying that Criterion has an abundance of riches when it comes to great films. Given that, a limited list of favorites would be hard to do. But when I see lists of "top 5" and "next top 5", and don't see Still Walking or The Secret of the Grain, all I can say is, I wish more of y'all would watch these two. Both really are excellent films, among the best Criterion has released, in my opinion, and either one is worthy of a top 10 list, if not both.

I read on another thread somewhere how George Clooney's The Descendants seemed very similar in themes to Still Walking, except Still Walking did it all so much better and more naturally. I haven't seen the Clooney film, but I liked reading that.

Having said this, though, I think many of the best films in the collecton are in the Eclipse sets, or on DVDs screaming to be upgraded to blu-ray.

I absolutely love Almodovar. Talk to Her is one of the best films of the last 20 years.

As an aside, Sam Fuller might the one I'd most love to have a cigar with.
