For me its impossible to narrow down a list of favorite directors. There are so many here not listed like Visconti , Fellini, Lean, Powell&Pressburger, Clouzot etc. In the case of Scorsesse he could fit into one of my favorite directors list simply on his efforts of film restoration. He seems to be all over the place in this field. That alone would place him in my list.
Those were listed, just not as readily as Scorcese, Kubrick, and several other "popular" directors.

All of the directors I've posted have had both good and bad films, and can be on the top of my list given any moment, hence me being a list *****. You can't really narrow down a favourite director of all time. Billy Wilder's probably the closest, but even he's had some duds.

What I find interesting, is that a lot of the favourite directors listed here are ones I consider to be quite mainstream, and the ones listing them are those same people complaining that Criterion has gone too mainstream.

I like a lot of different directors, but my one true cinematic love will always be Alfred Hitchcock.

The Canadian thing will never be fixed. I don't consider it to be too much of an issue.

I readily admit that the list whoring was a mistake, and I forgot how much you are bothered by it. I'm not that young, I'll be 27 in August. Chalk it up to distraction, laziness, and misreading, as I was too busy doing other things to actually read the original post, which is several pages back, and simply followed the others.

I'm not, I'm a Leo. Why would that matter though? I'm a little slow on the uptake this morning, due to all the snow that's falling.

Oh, I know. Even billzfan, while inquiring about everyone's favorite director, chose to list his second and third favorite directors. So, even his statement canceled itself out.

My take on posting lists on forums is, that they fill the gap during idle periods. In the case of this thread:

No news that isn't posted on the homepage.
No announcement periods.

This is taken up with lists, personal stories, "what did I buy today", "how much did I pay for it", "you're a moron, how can you say that?", etc, etc, etc.

Hey...I catch myself doing it from time to time.

Abuse is a gift we all enjoy...unless we're on the receiving end.

Right CC?

I actually prefer the lists to the whole Criterion sucks now, whine, whine, whine.

And awesome that you were also born in August.

BTW, I forgot to mention that La Jetee/Sans Soleil were on TCM last night/this morning.

Thanks...and I agree that the lists are better than "most" of the whining. Some of the posters here are "masters" at slinging their wares. Better than TV sometimes.

Yeah...August 27, 1958...Virgos are a bit psycho, but we're nice people.

Youth of the Beast is my favorite Suzuki. It's a very colorful film so it would look amazing on bluray.

And what's wrong with lists? Is this thread "too cool" for lists? Seriously, some people complain about the oddest things.

August 18th, 1985 here. I admit I have done my fair share of complaining, but at the same time, this forum does seem a bit too negative upon occasion.

This thread is too cool for a lot of things remember. I apologise in advance for my un-hippness, but I'm putting the stuff we're too cool for in list format:

1. lists
2. "mainstream films"
3. "too obscure films"
4. the Monkees
5. Henry Jaglom
6. B&N sales
7. latest hauls
8. coupons
9. not using coupons
10. liking Tiny Furniture
11. hating Tiny Furniture
12. for school
13. hipsters
14. anti-hipsters
15. DVDs
16. each other
17. Canadians
18. the Dutch
19. Republicans
20. shoelaces
21. gadgets
22. paper clips
23. the number 24
25. death

I'll draw your attention to the link in my signature. I'll keep it open and you may put in the titles you want to see (You can submit more than one).

It'll be a way of gauging what people want to see on Criterion blu. Results to be shown each or week or so (This is the only kind of list that matters. One created by us!).

I watched World on a Wire for the first time today. I really liked it. Amazing how things from The Matrix or Inception now look much less original.

Did anyone else notice what appears be an untranslated line in the movie? It's right at the 2:41:00 mark after Fred says "Delusions?".

As far as lists go, I've been enjoying them. I have a lot of Criterions that i have yet to watch, and the lists sometime give me an idea of what to pop in next.
