Stalag 17, The Fortune Cookie and Sabrina are very good.
I watched Sabrina for the first time last night - what a wonderful film, and what cracking dialog! It just goes to show how dire modern Hollywood romantic comedies are.

Nothing to do with Criterion, but I hope Paramount bring it out this year for their 100th anniversary.

I'm not that crazy about The Lost Weekend but a lot of people love it.
I will have a heart attack when Double Indemnity gets a release date. Without a doubt my favorite film noir. If I'm crazy about film noir, its because of Double Indemnity.

I wonder if there has been any attempt to get back the licenses Criterion lost. It seems the deal with Lionsgate releasing those films in Region A have fallen through. Lots of films there I am dying for on Blu.

This will be the first Fassbinder film I've seen. (the plot summary sounds right up my alley)

That would be nice. It is one thing to take over rights to films and release them. But Lionsgate is sitting on many films Criterion would have upgraded to Blu ray by now, and Lionsgate will probably never release. They should go through the list and let Criterion retain rights they have no interest in.

Conrad Veidt in 1928's The Man Who Laughs. The inspiration for the Joker. Other favorite movies of mine with him in it are The Hands of Orlac and Waxworks. Hand of Orlac is extremely moody while Waxworks has a last act with the superimposition of Jack the Ripper in twisted dark expressionistic images. Not the best ending and surviving prints could be better. Conrad plays Ivan the terrible in Waxworks. I believe in the 3rd segment. Emil Jennings also stars.

And of course The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari Love to see a Criterion Blu of that.

A release was just announced in France, if you're region-free.

Double Indemnity - Masters of Cinema coming in June. There's also a steelbook

Again, these involve a Region-B caveat. Heart attacks and film-noir crazies come separately.

As would I, as would I. An acceptable blu would do.

Mind you the look of Conrad in that film inspired the joker. Not the character. The movie is directed by famed expressionist Paul Leni based on a Victor Hugo novel. It was a pretty big production at the time. After the success of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Phantom of the Opera Carl Laemmle was encouraged to follow suite. Originally it was going to star Lon Chaney.

Roger Ebert's quote about sums it up
Quote:
The Man Who Laughs is a melodrama, at times even a swashbuckler, but so steeped in Expressionist gloom that it plays like a horror film.

Well, I don't partake in "hitting the bottle," but I wouldn't mind hitting some list-makers with a bottle.

Yeah, sometimes the set-ups people leave in their post are perfect.

Never the Canadians, though. Sometimes, you just have to overlook their silliness.

By the way, if I ever run off to Canada where's a good place to go? One of the larger cities where things are actually happening or just outside of a larger city? Is Rue Morgue magazine based in Toronto? In my first year of college (1995), it seemed like everyone I was chatting with online was from Canada. One girl and I talked for quite a while and did the whole mailing letters to each other and sending photos through the mail. I remember she worked in the bookstore of her university. I wonder where she is these days? Hmmm?

How do the Eureka/MoC transfers of M, Harakiri and For All Mankind compare to the Criterion transfers?

You mean after she got a restraining order, changed her name, and fled to Manitoba?

I'm sure you are better off not knowing. She probably liked to make lists.

I've been scrolling through pages and pages in this forum but what is the complete list of defective CC Blu-rays out? I've got Three Colors White and Carlos (Forget if its first or second disc that's bad) but are there others? I want to send them all back at once.

Those two the only ones that are defective. Well, at least those are the only two that you can replace...other ones, like the framing issue with Blue, aren't corrected (not sure if there's another with a defect, but those two are definitely the only ones you can send in)

I think the biggest difference you'll find in the transfers of any MOC and Criterion release is the contrast and black levels. MOC usually takes a "hands-off" approach and is usually at the mercy of the transfers that they're given. Criterion, on the other hand, always manipulates and tinkers with the transfers their given in order to provide the final look of what they feel is correct.

On Harakiri, one of the biggest things you'll notice in the reviews on this site and other sites is that the MOC release has more information in the frame and Criterion's release is slightly windowboxed.
