Does Criterion still have the rights to the BRD trilogy? Why is it OOP?

Oh and I'm 23 also.

Are you sure about that? Criterion usually doesn't make the DVD version OOP if they are doing a Blu-ray, unless it was an older title and they are doing a huge upgrade. The transfers of the BRD trilogy were pretty great to begin with.

I think maybe another company got the rights and that's why the Criterion set went OOP.

It's the whole man with no name trope in westerns. The Western is full of characters with a criminal past (usually not shown), ends up falling for the town and it's people, rids the town of evil & rides off into the sunset alone. Driver even has his own horse!

The aspect ratio for The Marriage of Maria Braun was wrong, so I believe since they would of likely went to a blu upgrade soon anyways, they let the original stock run out without making more (hence why it was "OUT OF STOCK" before this "Out of Print" appeared).

Add to the fact Criterion responded to someone's e-mail about the subject and they said they will re-issue it, just didn't know when:

Thank you for your email and question.
There will be a new release in the future of Fassbinder's BRD Trilogy, but we unsure when it will be available.
Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns, and thank you for supporting Criterion!
Best,
Jon Mulvaney
A week or so ago Criterion asked Facebook (good place to ask.....) what upgrades they would like to see in the future, because they were filling a new schedule out. It seems to me they would jump on this in that schedule (which has been said by them that schedules are 6 months in advance, so we could see it this year or next.).

But I gather that it's not very often that Criterion reissues an OOP title, which is unfortunate.

But this isn't the same as, say, Pierrot le fou being OOP.

BRD is OOP because they are not making anymore at the moment (due to making a new re-issue with correct aspect ratios). They still have the rights, unlike the others which went OOP because they don't have the rights to sell them.

It's as OOP as a original dvd release of Salo or something. Have the rights to the films, just waiting on releasing it again while the old dvd release is not going to be sold anymore.

Oh! I didn't know that. Good to know. Thanks! Are there many of those situations where an OOP disc will be reissued eventually?

Just this one. Usually they will sell the old dvd until they announce a re-issue (see Rules of the Game, Tokyo Drifter, Branded to Kill, etc). Guess they just thought in this case it would just be a gamble to waste money on more stock of a boxset, not sell, and then have to make the re-issues.

I thought I was young at 23 liking Rene Clair, but then again I was about 17-18 when I got into his films.
