See, I don't assume people know stuff based on what their titles are. I assume people know stuff by actually reading their posts. The titles are just assigned by how many posts you have, and I'm not sure if deleting posts will change your title.

You might have to delete 84 posts to see if your title changes, because I'm sure than once you hit 100, you become an active member.

Weird...they're still disappearing.

As for title changes...I still want to know how to become a Blu-ray Ninja. I've been stuck in active member purgatory for a long time.

And as far as actual Criterions are concerned, I'm still wondering if I'm the only person who has watched Vanya on 42nd Street. I'm interested to hear what other peeps think about it.

This is how you get to be a ninja. Post over 5000 posts. Somehow I think Stalin is preventing us from this.

I haven't watched Vanya, and no one really mentions it besides you. I may have to check it out so you're not talking to yourself, because this forum seems to focus on a few select titles Criterion has put out. Even then, some are more discussed than others.

*GULP* I have a long way to go. But now that I've seen the list...Ninja Sminja!!! I want to be a GRAND DUKE!!!

As for Vanya...I don't predict much convo surrounding it... But at least it hasn't been dealt the same fate of anger and hate as Tiny Furniture (which is still waiting in my Netflix queue for me to get through the last seasons of United States of Tara, Californication, and Eureka.

From your avatar, I would've guess you're a 54-year old Australian, no?

We're all slowly fading away like Marty McFly's family in his photo.

I have the old Sony DVD and have watched it several times, though not in the last year or two, so it is difficult to discuss it in depth. I do plan on buying the blu (and a few other double dips) at the potential B&N sale.

Those who haven't seen it, it really is worth seeking out. The performances are solid. As a staged play in an empty theater it almost reminds me of what I'd expect from a Bergman play -- the themes are similarly heavy and bitter but not without humor and measured hope. Rightly or wrongly, I associate this with Winter Light and Wild Strawberries (or even to a lesser degree Crimes and Misdemeanors).

While re-reading about the film after the new edition was announced I was surprised to see Chekhov's source material discussed as a comedy with much lost in translation and interpretation. I'm tempted to seek out some of the other productions (BBC has two) for comparison's sake, but have not done so yet.

Regarding the film itself, if you like "black box" theater -- plays light on stage design -- and tend to like Criterion's catalog choices (especially the talky ones like, say, My Dinner with Andre, or the others I mentioned above) this is a safe purchase.

In the meantime, say what you will about Ebert, I still enjoy reading his Great Movies entries and some of his artier reviews. This link takes you to his original review of Vanya.

... but it's so much easier (and less likely to stir tempers) to lazily write a list of directors or state my age... guilty on both charges

I'll be turning 44 later this month.

Most recent Criterion I've seen was The Four Feathers, which was better than I had anticipated.

I love The Four Feathers, which really doesn't get enough love in this thread. TCM gives it a ton of love, because I swear it was on at least 6 times since Criterion released their edition. My dad is probably one of the few people in the world who prefers the 1977 version with Beau Bridges though.

I want more Korda films on BD via Criterion actually. They've got a bunch they can upgrade and/or add.

The thread is still shrinking.

Sigh...I DO! I remember seeing her on the old Tonight Show and occasionally on The Ed Sullivan Show. My Dad used to talk about her as well. She was kind of like the female Redd Foxx.

Not many of us remember The Ed Sullivan Show...

That's nothing...a few of us remember posting pictures of ourselves as our avatars for a short period of time. If memory serves me right, CCFixx and myself were two of the few people to comply. That's when I fell in love with him!

Maybe that's why he's been ignoring my PMs?

We're not allowed to talk politics here, but I do not like Diefenbaker's legacy of killing the Avro Arrow, nor the "fruit machines" he bought for the RCMP to hunt out homosexuals.

For the record, I came along during the first part of Brian "I'll take the money in brown paper bags" Mulroney.

What? Are you serious? How can people not know who Ike is? I'm Canadian, and know about Ike as both president and his WWII military career!

The bolded is a good piece of advice that cannot be stressed enough. I'm guilty of forgetting it too, but this forum is notorious for making things too personal.
