I'm assuming now that I picked up "Knife in the Water" during the last sale, all the CC FB posts will mean it's getting an upgrade. Oh well, I'll take it!

Anyone else hoping for some Chaplin or Kurosawa? I feel like I need to own their whole filmography. Been through all the Chaplin works on Hulu Plus and makes me want them all the more for myself. The Kurosawa I'm holding off on as I have all the Blus released and both Eclipse sets. Still waiting on his other major works on Blu!

They are tweeting about it because today is the 50th anniversary of the film's premiere. They do this sort of thing all the time, so it is unlikely that it has to do with an impending release.

Most wanted

1. The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou

(If anyone has seen the HD broadcast from HDNET Movies you know how glorious it looks on BROADCAST, so it would definitely look awesome on Blu-Ray.)

Slaughterhouse Five, the film, is quite good; I've seen it a couple times, definitely worth checking out. I think I saw Mother Night not too long ago, can't remember much about it (which doesn't mean anything except I didn't dislike it).

Not a huge Vonnegut fan, meaning I've read some of his stuff and enjoyed it, but by no means have read all that much of it. Recall particularly enjoying God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater ages ago, and I also must have read Slaughterhouse Five at some point.

Obtw, I'm not one of those who feel a movie based on a book is bad if it's not exactly like the book. As long as the film itself is good, that's all I care about.

Hummina-hummina-hummina--

I just watched Letter Never Sent -- not Criterion's restoration unfortunately, but was blown away by the film just the same. First of all, I didn't realize until afterwards that it was directed and shot by the same duo that did Soy Cuba and Cranes are Flying (though I was reminded of Cranes throughout).

Can't wait to see it on blu, as it definitely washed the taste of mediocrity out of my mouth after Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence last night, which was nearer to an endurance test than a film.

That might be the greatest commentary ever. The Alan Parsons Project deconstructing The Wall.

I really loved Videodrome, gotta love the mixture of thought provoking social commentary and disturbing images of violence and sex. So what films in the old CC are similar? House? Chronos?

I'd recommend more Cronenberg, though I'm not a fan of Naked Lunch, which is also a CC title.

eXistenZ, Crash, The Fly, and Scanners are all great!

Well, nothing says disturbing images of violence and sex quite like Antichrist.

Repulsion comes to mind, too. It's more a character study than social commentary but it's definitely both thought provoking and very visceral. A lot of the imagery might seem dated but they're still very powerful.

Cronos and Videodrome frequently get mentioned together but they're really not very similar. They have something of the same 'stylized violence' vibe but substantively they're nothing alike.

It's very good and well worth getting, but don't get it just because you liked Videodrome.

Based on your description: There is nothing at all that is similar to House, it's as unique as they come. It's not like Videodrome in feeling one bit. In the CC, I'd say Cronos is a better comparison (although not a better film), another close one is Antichrist, and maybe even Repulsion. Although, honestly..when I read your description, I'm more likely to think of Salo or In the Realm of Senses.

Edit: Octagon beat me to most of it..

That would be complicated... MGM did the laserdisc, Sony did the DVD. I don't see both of them agreeing to licence out the material.

Luis Bunuel. I can not believe he was not mentioned yet. Anything by him. I would tryBelle de Jour and Phantom Liberty on CC. Also watch Un Chien Andalou, 13 min film that crushes most surreal films. I have a thread going with weird surreal films, check that out for more films.

I would also advise against House and Cronos if you're looking for something with the same vibes as Videodrome. Cronos doesn't have much substance IMO and House is an off-the-wall Looney Tunes horror flick.

I ordered Belle De Jour (Catherine Deneuve ) during the valentines day sale along with Charade, M, and Godzilla. I also have Videodrome, Breathless, The Killing, Paths of Glory, Dazed & Confused, and Benny Button. Oh and I ordered The Last Temptation of Christ yesterday.

I am open to anything, there are so many I don't know what to get next. I am thinking of getting a copy of Pierrot Le Fou before the price goes way up. I watched Breathless recently and I want more Godard.

I finally import Certified Copy from the UK, and the very same day it arrives I learn about the upcoming CC edition.

Ugh, I've had my import for a couple months. I feel like seeing it a bunch of times before CC's comes out to feel like I made a good decision. The transfer is quite great but CC does have the additional film. I dont have Close-Up, so instead of double dipping, Ill get it. An aside: two of my top favorites from last year were Iranian: Certified Copy and one for the record books: A Separation!

Was my favorite film of the last year, I don't hear much about it on here outside of the thread for the UK release. I got the UK release and most likely will immediately buy the US release once Sony puts it out. I'd definitely recommend it to everyone here.

I agree with your recommendation. Salo is obvious if what you are looking for is "thought provoking social commentary and disturbing images of violence and sex". The House recommendations are nothing but suggesting the horror elements between the 2 films and nothing else in common with what your looking for.
