Well, it was interesting to see an actual physical disc, meaning (presumably) at least one huge batch if not a full run was produced. I can't imagine Sony sitting on all that cost unless there's a legal holdup of some kind.

I'm always down for Samurai films and pretty much any Japanese releases! Very rarely though am I not happy with the announcements. Criterion only releases maybe 3-4 blu-rays I'm not interested in every year. I've got every blu from them besides maybe 12 or so, so I'm very rarely "disappointed".

Oh, and my guesses:

The Gold Rush
Floating Clouds
Shallow Grave
Samurai Trilogy
Le Samourai
An Autumn Afternoon
Oh god, that would be a great month. I would be in for the bolded for sure, although I haven't seen Shallow Grave.

You should see the comments on FB about the delay I always figured that the age level of Criterion fans was high but sometimes I wonder? Give it a rest it's not like they killed your grand mother, they will annouce the releases tomorrow

That's awesome, and certainly makes a wait palatable. You guys are right, some of the comments on the FB page are ridiculous. I realize quite a few are jesting extremely, though.

I'm loving the Hitchcock explosion on blu. A few months ago I remember bemoaning his lack of output when The Lady Vanishes was announced: since then we've had Rebecca, Spellbound, Notorious, Lifeboat, To Catch a Thief, and now The 39 Steps confirmed/released. And Rear Window, Vertigo, and The Birds are all but on their way as well, due to the leaked Universal release schedule that has proved its credibility multiple times this year.

One of my orders turned up yesterday containing: The Lady Vanishes, Rebecca and Notorious. It also contained Some Like It Hot, The Apartment and Manhattan. It only occurred to me later that all of them were black and white. I put them all in to test them and they look gorgeous! Particularly Manhattan and The Apartment - black and white Cinemascope is so great on blu-ray
But back to Hitchcock - you're right, it's finally starting to look up. Here's hoping Universal don't screw the pooch on their titles.
I have To Catch A Thief on a nice DVD, but it's pretty tempting to upgrade. Like Charade, for me it's one of those "holiday" films, where watching it is like a mini-vacation. Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris was like that for me.
I've only just heard about The 39 Steps. I'll be down for that. The UK edition from ITV is supposed to be pretty dreadful, so hopefully Criterion do a better job.

Pat, the world has become a place of convenience and entitlement by the masses. Facebook is simply the epitome of that flaw, regardless of it being Criterions page....

Now, back to the titles. I would assume that it was delayed possibly due to the problems with Harold and Maude. Maybe they will announce titles and let us all in on what is going on with H&M..

The 39 Steps (obviously)
The Gold Rush
Knife in the Water
Children of Paradise
[wild card]

Do it, you won't be sorry. It looks absolutely fantastic! Of Hitch's titles on blu currently, it's up there with North by Northwest as the best-looking, and it may even top that!

That's quite a nice haul you got there, man; and black & white surely looks great in hi-def if done right. I need to get around to picking up the Allen's - speaking of good-looking black & white - but with all the titles coming out recently I've been holding out for lower price points, saving those for the sales/coupons that inevitably come up.

So true... Just look at the titles people suggest on there..it's like they think "Criterion=best, so they should release all my favorites"...and they're often films other studios can easily handle, or already have.

No big point or anything...just an observation...
I'm not that big a samurai movie fan, unless it's the Melville kind.

More Hitchcock is definitely a good thing, although I would have liked to seen Foreign Correspondent first. I hope they do a new cover for 39 Steps. This year has been great for us Hitchcock fans. Hopefully Strangers on a Train is released in the US not far from the Germany release date in June.

Ah, they're great releases. I've seen The Apartment countless times, and this new release just made me fall in love with it all over again. (that sounds awfully dramatic, doesn't it)

Your post reminds me...I really have to get around to upgrading Charade as well. It was my first Criterion, and first 'classic' film I really loved, so I feel particularly nostalgic towards it.
