I believe it means it's best to back away. Slowly. Non-threateningly. It seems the natives are restless:

Remember: No sudden moves. Back away... Prepare some non-threatening conversation just in case they notice you.

What lovely taxidermy you have there!

Not sure why you are concerned (your business), but I'd recommend PM'ing a mod like Beta Man.

The US site doesn't have the pre-order up yet for some odd reason. I'm still waiting for them to add the June pre-orders for Criterion too. They're also having a mini-sale of sorts, as a bunch of titles are down in the 20-24 dollar range.
And finally confirmed on the official Beatles site

A bit off topic but just in case anyone is interested. Was at Wall mart and they had To Catch A Thief for $16.99 but actually it pass in the cash register at $14.99, very good price. That is in Montreal howver don't know if it's the same everywhere

I see, well I am no sockpuppet, been in here long enough. That being said I will mention it when someone is being a jack@ss toward someone else when the person is only providing their opinion on something. Too many people sometime in these forums seem to thing that only their own opinion should be listen too.

Just read it in the Kino thread. Excellent news.

I'd like to say that all we need now is a Criterion release of Spartacus, but that would seem ungrateful and/or spoiled after learning this great news.

Hell yeah, the only Stanley's I haven't seen. I could kick myself for not making it to the American Cinemateque about a year and a half back to view a screening of Fear & Desire.

Not ungrateful at all, just the God's honest truth. I do think we'll see an upgrade of it this year, based upon the heavily scrutinized desktop work station photo Criterion posted last year.

Indiewire posted today as part of their New Directors/New Films 2012: 10 Films Indiewire Thinks You Should See:

Quote:
"Fear and Desire"
Stanley Kubrick is not a new director and "Fear and Desire" is not a new film. But when this first feature came out in 1953, the opposite was true. Kubrick's legendary initiation behind the camera -- excluding his background as a photographer -- came together when the filmmaker was 24. Although Kubrick himself felt the movie was lacking and tried to suppress it, the minimalist war drama about five soldiers dealing with a native woman behind enemy lines illustrates the seeds of inspiration for the director's first widely acclaimed masterpiece, "Paths of Glory." No longer a question mark of the past, these new screenings of "Fear and Desire" will finally fill in a major gap thanks to Kino Lorber's restoration of the film.

Smile Criterion Collection question

I'm to the forum but thought it would be a good place to ask this question. Will Criterion ever stop issuing standard DVDs, and, if so, will the collection then move ahead as essentially a blu ray (plus online) collection?

I'm asking because I have a large DVD collection (almost all of the existing CC and hundreds of non-CC) but have not switched to blu ray. I haven't made the jump to blu ray yet because it just hasn't felt necessary. The quality of what I have is fine with me. I have an HD Sharp Aquos and an upscaling DVD player.

And I wouldn't mind continuing to purchase the standard DVDs from Criterion. But I figure, if they are going to be an only blu ray company sometime in the future, then I might as well make the jump now (I know, I know, I should make the jump anyway, but, like I said, it's not that big a deal to me).

I guess what it boils down to me is, I already have a large DVD collection, I basically only buy CC products (I don't buy recent movies unless they are issued buy CC), and I'd be fine just sticking with the standard DVDs. But I don't want the case to be that in, say, four years, they stop issuing SDs, and then I'll have to switch anyway. Will Criterion always issue SDs since it has been such a cornerstone of their stock and trade?

As for the potential difference of money, it's not an issue for me insofar as I budget a hundred or so bucks per month for the newly issued CCs.

Thanks for your help and consideration!

I think DVD releases will be around for sometime to come. Blu-ray is popular but still not in the same category that DVD reached at the same amount of time. Plus you still have many who do not see the need to get older movies on Blu-ray since in their mind they cannot be improve. I think DVD will still be around well past the mid way point of this decade and may well still be with us when we reach the next decade.

If I were you I would upgrade! You may be happy with what you currently have but will notice a huge difference and really enjoy the pinnacle of home entertainment and ensure your collection is the best it has the potential to be!

As far as the Criterion part, I'm sure DVD will be around a while but if money isn't an issue (small price difference anyway) then why not get the best presentation possible? Lossless and the better capacity ensures a much better visual presentation ad well. You have an HD television and a blu-ray player is cheap now so there is no reason to be content with something on its way out.

FTFY. Canadians are only hated by the US, because you guys, despite being the so-called world leaders, only wish you could be as well loved as us worldwide. :P
