Over the years, I've learnt to not let it bother me too much. I'm fan of Lifeboat - a solid film. It's also one of those "technical exercise" films for Hitchcock, like Rope, where he's trying to work within certain technical parameters, in this case keeping the camera confined to the boat. |

Kuroneko isn't much like Branded to Kill or other Seijun Suzuki films. It is a wonderful film though, so definitely recommended. If you're interested in Seijun Suzuki, you should be looking at Tokyo Drifter. You should also be looking at the Nikkatsu Noir Eclipse set, as well as the The Warped World of Koreyoshi Kurahara Eclipse set. I've watched all them and loved them. They're loaded with 1960's Japanese cool ![]() |

![]() It's definitely of the same period in Godard's early, formative years. Like Breathless, Pierrot Le Fou is pretty goofy and playful with genre conventions. I blind-bought it ages and really liked it. In fact, just lent my copy to a friend. You should also be looking at Vivre Sa Vie - a favourite Godard for me and quite few others on this forum. |

NAPOLEON RETURNS
There is no other movie like Napoleon. Abel Gance’s silent 1927 masterpiece is a truly legendary work of cinema, for which the director pulled out all the stops technically, experimenting with camera, screen width, and editing in ways that still blow the mind today. Gance’s original cut, shown over two days in Paris, is said to have been more than nine hours long. Various shortened versions showed all over the world after that premiere, but most of the original footage has long been lost. The Oscar-winning historian Kevin Brownlow, who has been committed to reconstructing the film for decades, talked to us about Gance’s visionary filmmaking, on the eve of a handful of screenings of his latest, five-and-a-half hour restoration of the film, at the historic Paramount Theater in Oakland, California, March 24, 25, and 31 and April 1. |

Just so everybody knows, if The Element of Crime starts popping up in my upgrade/wishlists for a while it's because I was just floored by Melancholia.
Given my limited attention span this will undoubtedly pass but it might take a while. I gotta say, it was pretty damn good. |

I wouldn't be surprised to see it get released actually. Now that the legal issues have apparently been resolved, it's just the logistical issues regarding release.
I watched a bootleg (clocking in at 5:13) earlier and it's stunning. One of the greatest films ever made. |

Hausu is batshit insane, even moreso than BtK. As I've said earlier in this thread, it's essentially a cracked-out acid-trip induced episode of the Monkees extended to an hour and a half, starring Japanese school girls instead of the pre-fab four. ![]() I think you should grab both to be honest. ![]() Quote:
![]() ![]() I've pre-ordered Shallow Grave and The 39 Steps, I've decided to wait until July for the Samurai trilogy, due to the price on it. Shallow Grave held some mild appeal to me until I saw Christopher Eccleston was in it in addition to Ewan MacGreggor. Now it's at a higher priority. |
