Warehouse Deals had a bit of a sale and I picked up seven titles through Amazon...

8 1/2
Branded to Kill
Design for Living
The Lady Vanishes
The Moment of Truth
Orpheus
Tokyo Drifter

I was also scammed into ordering from Deep Discount by what I thought was a deal and ordered Hunger and The Magician. I'll keep them but I'm not happy that I couldn't cancel them and order for a better price (admittedly only a few dollars cheaper).

Three transactions in three separate days to increase my chances of being able to pull this off. The Criterion sale lasts about a month so there is a good chance we'll see some member and non-member coupons.

Here, let me break it down for you:

Transaction 1:

$39.99 * 0.50 [Sale] * 0.90 [Membership Discount] * 0.80 [20% Member Coupon] = $14.40.
$39.99 * 0.50 [Sale] * 0.90 [Membership Discount] * 0.85 [15% Non-Member Coupon] = $15.30.

Transaction 2:

$39.99 * 0.50 [Sale] * 0.90 [Membership Discount] * 0.80 [20% Member Coupon] = $14.40.
$39.99 * 0.50 [Sale] * 0.90 [Membership Discount] * 0.85 [15% Non-Member Coupon] = $15.30.

Transaction 3:

$39.99 * 0.50 [Sale] * 0.90 [Membership Discount] * 0.80 [20% Member Coupon] = $14.40.
$39.99 * 0.50 [Sale] * 0.90 [Membership Discount] * 0.85 [15% Non-Member Coupon] = $15.30.

Total: $89.08, minus $50.00 in gift cards, $39.08, add $25.00 for cost of gift cards sold, $64.08, add 6.25% MA sales tax, $4.00, $68.08.

According to your cashier friend there will be a "Buy 2, Get 1 Free" deal in June. I think Criterions are normally discounted by 10% in store. I remember seeing a "classcode" 10% discount in addition to my 10% member discount if I bought them during a "Buy 2, Get 1" free deal. My memory could be a little rusty though.

Transaction 1:

$39.99 * 0.90 [Classcode] * 0.90 [Member Discount] * 0.80 [Member Coupon] = $25.91.
$39.99 * 0.90 [Classcode] * 0.90 [Member Discount] * 0.85 [Non-Member Coupon] = $27.53.

Third movie is free so $0.00.

Transaction 2:

$39.99 * 0.90 [Classcode] * 0.90 [Member Discount] * 0.80 [Member Coupon] = $25.91.
$39.99 * 0.90 [Classcode] * 0.90 [Member Discount] * 0.85 [Non-Member Coupon] = $27.53.

Third movie is free so $0.00.

Total: $106.88, minus $50.00 in gift cards, $56.88 add $25.00 (cost of gift cards sold), $81.88, add 6.25% MA sale tax, $5.12, $87.00.

If you get the 10% classcode discount it's almost $19 more compared to waiting until July. If you don't get the classcode it's almost $32 more compared to waiting until July.

There.

July is Criterion time, however if you can find three $24.99 titles or three $19.99 titles there might be deals in June IF there is a "Buy 2, Get 1" free deal.

Actually there's the $5 Off Your Purchase of $50 or more coupon as well. That expires 5/27, however assuming Barnes & Noble comes out with a new one before June, hmmm . . . this could get interesting. It would still probably be best to wait until July.

Cheeseburger!

I understand people who would pay just about anything for their favorite Criterion films on Blu-ray so $15 to $30 saved between two or three transactions might not be a big deal. There's nothing wrong with saving money here and there though

It would suck if Barnes & Noble decides to only have one Criterion sale a year compared to two AND decide no coupons can be used during the sale at all. Sadly I think we're headed that way. They re-structured the whole "mystery" coupon fiasco. Add that to the fact many Barnes & Nobles don't even sell media anymore, I wonder how much it costs Barnes & Noble to keep all available stock on the floor. I can't imagine they are moving much in between sales.

This coupled with the fact that Best Buy is closing stores. It would really suck if Amazon was the only place to buy physical media. Then Amazon wouldn't have to reduce prices because there would be no competition, :/ I think we're a ways off from that though.

Sorry to derail the thread, carry on.

Absolutely. I kid, but admire your thoroughness. I'm not a BN member, I've gotten pretty mediocre service from them online and the nearest store doesn't carry DVD/Blu or CD so I'm not a member. Twice a year I'm a customer. If I can find a coupon I'm happy, but the 50% has to be enough for me.

If all goes as planned, July I'll be throwing away 5-10% too much () on:
Harold and Maude, Vanya on 42nd Street, something not yet announced and possibly a Spalding Gray title or two (still bummed they're so barebones).

I just purchased 12 Angry Men on Amazon this morning, so that's off my list. So many double dips I can't resist

Because of the special features. Warner refused to include audio commentary and many other extras. Aronofsky also wants to produce another cut of the film.

Also: Warner's release is low bitrate VC-1 encode with lossy audio, Fox's release has DTS-HD Master audio, but the video is MPEG2. It could look better with high bitrate AVC (or VC-1) encode

I have long wanted to change out all my original "paper/cardboard" Criterion bds for plastic case versions, and decided recently to order The Last Metro and The Last Emperor from amazon to get "case" versions.
I just opened the package and was stunned to find the original cardboard versions. I mean wow. I just cannot believe Amazon still has the cardboard versions available to sell. I mean Criterion must have issued those 2 titles in the "new" plastic cases like 3 years ago.
incredible.

That just tells you how few copies of each title that Amazon has sold versus the quantity that Criterion had originally pressed. Neither of us have access to either number, though, so it's only a guess as to how many are still left.

I have yet to see a copy of The Last Metro in a plastic case at B&N. Marienbad is the same way.

That's like trying to decide between a bj and a hj. Both are satisfying but one is just a bit better than the other. That being said, 12 Angry Men.
