Just picked up Letter Never Sent from DD for 15.53 shipped. Man what a good deal for such a great film. Cant wait to get it. I'm also tempted to grab Tokyo Drifter from Amazon as its been on my wishlist since its release. I might hold off on it. Fortunately, I now have all the new releases that I want. There's nothing in April I'm interested in so I will catch up on some older titles I still want. Nothing I'm interested in comes out till May when Le Haine is released.

I would love to see Criterion do some John Ford films.

Oh, I'm not knocking Lost Souls. It's a dandy little picture (as I would say if I were ever guest hosting on TCM - I know, I know, it needs work) on many levels and it's even a pretty good blind buy candidate in that 'what you see is definitely what you get' sense.

But still...

12 Angry Men. Island is middling at best, but there's much better classic horror films out there (The Old Dark House, for one, just not on blu).

Add 400 Blows to that list as well - at least in my area.

It's probably the same copies that just sit there indefinitely.

I know at one point Aronofsky even recorded his own commentary and posted it on his website. The link was dead last time I looked for it, but I'm guessing it's still out there somewhere. I would love a criterion edition of The Fountain. Just a great film.

Any other Criterions at very good prices right now on Deep Discount? Their website is always a bit cumbersome to navigate. I saw the info on the discount coupon code and will probably pick up Letter Never Sent and Three Outlaw Samurai. Any other recommendations for good ones coming in well under $20?

Thanks

The pre-order for The Organizer is pretty good.

Well, this image will affect how I view the film when it arrives. Suddenly it sounds like Salo or some sort of human centipede circle jerk

Yeah already tried that. It lists lots that are not Criterions. Search engine must not be set up very well. No biggie...I'll wade through all the results anyway even though they don't all match what I requested.

Yeah DDD's search has always sucked. If you go to DVD deals and select the 40% off, then select Blu-Ray, then sort by price this is what you get:

Blu-Ray CCs less than 20 dollars:

Organizer Blu-ray Price: $17.96

Three Outlaw Samurai Price: $18.89

Letter Never Sent Price: $19.41

Jimi Plays Monterey/Shake! Otis at Monterey Price: $19.57

Moment of Truth Price: $19.76

Makioka Sisters Price: $19.70

Identification of a Woman Price: $19.97

I have not seen Island of the Lost Souls but 12 Angry Men is one of my favorite Criterion titles. The film is exciting and incredibly well-crafted. In my opinion, one real American classic that truly deserves its status (Unlike many other films that people tend to mention time and again as classics). The supplements are really the icing of the cake, with all of them being worthwhile. Also, it is one of the best looking films in the Collection in the format, probably the best B&W transfer I have seen from Criterion. Can't recommend it enough . Also and as an interesting fact, 12 Angry Men was Lumet's feature debut and I really can't wrap my mind around this because of how amazing the film is compared to the level of experience Lumet possibly had at the moment. Just goes to show the best ones are born with it .

Just watched Zazie dans le metro and I absolutely loved it. It is one of the funniest movies I've seen in my life (Chaplin levels of funny) and I could clearly see the influence it had on Amélie, Micmacs and all those other zany French films that came way after the 60's. It started to get a little insane towards the end, but overall... One for my collection for sure.

Default best cc blu's

This has probably been asked many times before but I was wondering what everyone's best surprises have been with blinding buying CC blu's so far?

I think my list would consist of:

Paris Texas
Close-Up
Crumb
High and Low

They're somewhat lesser films in the blu collection but each have blown me away in different ways that they're probably all in my top 10 or top 5 even.

Anyone else's make a blind buy that became an instant top 10?

My Top 10 Favorite Criterion blind buys (on blu-ray):

Still Walking
The Secret of the Grain
Mystery Train
The Complete Jean Vigo
People on Sunday
Pale Flower
Letter Never Sent
Branded to Kill
Ride With the Devil
Repulsion

As far as a top 10 or so list overall, the first five always appear. But these are all favorites, especially Letter Never Sent, my most recent discovery (love Kalatozov - c'mon Criterion, let's get The Cranes Are Flying on blu-ray!)

I still have several other blind buys on my shelf I have not watched yet, but so far I cannot say I have found a blind buy from Criterion I regretted (okay, except for A Safe Place, but I had no choice with that one since it was part of a set).

Mine would definitely be The Double Life of Veronique. I watched it again the day after watching it for the first time, and then again with commentary the day after that. I rarely rewatch a movie more than once a year. Such a great surprise for me!

Well, as oildude has done, I'm listing 10, because it's just too hard to narrow this list down:
Army of Shadows
Carlos
Summer Hours
Last Year at Marienbad
Sweet Smell of Success
Chungking Express
Harakiri
Diabolique
The Music Room
World on a Wire

And there are still more I could've easily listed. But the top five I have here are pretty unassailable.
It would be easier to list the blind-buys we regret...
