All of them? No. Probably somewhere between 25% and 50% of the DVD's have slim or no chance of seeing upgrades for various reasons.

However given what Criterion has done with Universal in the past (licensed "double dips" on blu-ray), that one seems likely since it's already in the catalogue. It's probably up their with the Wes Anderson's as "most inevitable" to eventually see a format upgrade. Things could change of course, I'm just guessing based on the stated facts. If I saw a steal on the Universal blu-ray I'd probably just get it, and worry about the potential Criterion double dip later.

Hi P@t. Easier said than done though. I recall in one of your posts from a few days back that you described some of the ways that were you were able to see some of the classics before purchasing. I can't recall now what they were (aside from your having seen some in your college days, as did I~ my first introduction to Seven Samurai!) but at the time I was thinking that I wasn't able to do that for some reason. I even checked out a Roger's Video a week or two or ago but they had nothing...

Well I have notice a "surge" in popularity with Criterion. What I mean is it always had "fans" but in the last two years with Blu-ray and words spreading on the quality and care of their releases, new fans have been added and for many of these newer fans there seem to have this idea that "every" movie should be release by Criterion or it sure does feel like that to me anyway. I have only starter seeing this in recent time and don't really recall much of this type of talk in the past.

Yeah well I am living in Quebec (grew up here) and so French cinema is something I knew from an early age and that is one big part of the collection of course. It does seem that French television stations here always were very good at showing foreign movies compared to the rest of North America. While I am not implying any political notions here (not the place for it and frankly I see myself as Canadian and nothing else) it is a bit true that Quebec is a bit different in culture then the rest of Canada and the USA. I have been quite lucky to see so many European and world movies on the TV channel growing up that I don't always remember that it is far from the same for many other people.

I have heard many in this thread from the USA that seem to find Criterion in their local library, maybe have a look that way? You might get lucky?

Good thought, thank you. I will check that out.

Yeah, you're lucky to have had that opportunity! Out this way our only option is an occasional selection on TCM.

Well, that's the point: Criterion knows how to make ANYTHING look cool, by taking it straight on on a cult-movie historian level. Even "Godzilla", "Blow-Out", "Armageddon" and "Head".
And we still have the maverick late-90's image of the studio that would do a Special Edition of anything just to see the look on our faces.

If Universal did a SE of KindCop, we...well, we wouldn't think they were joking, just desperate.
Last year's Criterion "C.H.U.D." was standard lame default-cliche' joke fodder, but 80's Arnold/Reitman on Criterion?...Sure! Why the heck not?

When a comic disappoints his audience with the punchline, and leaves them more depressed than they were in the setup, because they were expecting something better and more detailed than they got, that's...not doing well for the comic's job.

How can you equate Head with Armageddon? Davy Jones is spinning in his grave. Mike Nesmith is ready to cut a bi.tch. Godzilla is ok though.

My first exposure to French cinema? "La Boűm.". 1) that French teacher should be fired. 2) if Criterion released it the same month as Kindergarden Cop, I know which I'd buy.

First exposure to French TV? "Herlock Sholmes.". Mon dieu.

I'd love to see The Monkees do the slow motion walk to the spaceship. Their space suits would, of course, have to be double breasted and Mike's helmet would need a Pom Pom.

She is known as "the eternal virgin" because of her screen performances and the characters she played mostly in the 1950's. The story in Tokyo Twilight is a bit more "hard edge" when compared with other movies made by Ozu. Ah La Boum! Le jours ou je suis tomber en amour avec Sophie Marceau

I actually saw it in theaters in 1980. I am not sure but I doubt anyone associated with the movie ever expected that it would become what it did in the French world, was quite the unexpected smash.

Thanks! I started this cause a lot of times the movies in the Eclipse sets are overlook and there are so many good movies in these sets with so few of them ever going to be release in Blu-ray. I noticed that a lot of people where not even aware of the Eclipse sets and many of them are sure worth it and can sometimes be found during the sales are very good prices.

I strike once again, another Ozu last night from the Late Ozu set

Equinox Flower (Higanbana 1958) the first ozu movie made in color. Now for me it's difficult to make a claim which of his movies is the best because I really enjoy them all but this one might well be one of my most favorite. It as everything in it, good story, wonderful acting, comedy, drama. The added element of color also add something. The way Ozu use his camera, always in one place, no movement and it seem always place in a door frame or window with the addition of color seem like you are watching a moving painting. The camera work of Ozu make's you feel as it you are watching everyday life passing in front of your eyes. The story of the movie is a conflict of generations and was probably as shocking for late 1950's Japan then Guess Who's Coming To Dinner was for late 60's USA. The clash of values between the older generation and the younger one. Things change, value changes and it's not always easy for those set in their ways and older to accept such changes. A father must deal with the fact that his daughter will pick her husband and not him. How does he feel about it? Even for a man as open minded as the father, the situation is hard to accept. Ozu give's us the change of Japan, leaving behind the old ways and slowly becoming more industrial and more like the western world. Is it good or bad? Either way, change is a way of life in the end.

No, he would wear the hat on the outside of his helmet, like he did in "Your Friendly Neighbourhood Kidnappers," when they were counting down to the teen girls ripping Davy's clothes off, which never happened, that guy Lester Crabtree had his clothes ripped off instead, and then became a super swinging rock sensation who never sang because girls kept ripping his clothes off, which in turn prompted The Monkees to determine that if you want to be famous, you just have to rip off your clothes, and started ripping each others clothes off. That was just so totally appropriate for a "children's show" too. Not that I minded or anything.

As long as it's pink. It can't be anything but pink.

Only a week and a half until announcements. I wonder what July will bring.

I watched 2 last and both impressed me.

Firstly, Life During Wartime. It's a tough one to rate, but I love these quirky movies that Criterion put out. I loved Timmy and Joy. I thought it was incredibly well acted and hilarious in spots. I also felt moved by one particular scene. I recommend everyone give it a watch if they haven't already.

Second was The Moment of Truth. I have never seen anything like it. Looking at the page for it on here, it says 110 people have it in their Collection... I wouldn't say it was blind buy territory (especially as it has hardly any extras), but I can honestly say you will enjoy it and it will excite you.

There's an article on Miss Dunham in the current:

http://www.criterion.com/current/pos...n-movie-series

Also, she selects films for a series:

http://www.bam.org/pagenotfound.aspx...ath=/view.aspx

I applaud the Mulholland Drive selection. GIRLFRIENDS is an interesting selection. I haven't seen it myself but seems worthy of a viewing. The article says Kubrick enjoyed it.
