It's ten films that are about 45 mins. to an hour each. I wound up renting the DVDs from NetFlix (back when I had the disc option) and tried to watch one of the three discs in the set, so 2-3 per evening. Two is a good number.

Knowing Criterion, Tuesday. They've been delaying the announcements to the 16th for the past few months when the 15th doesn't fall on a weekend, so this month, where it does, they'll delay them until the 17th.

Absolutely essential viewing (and Kino's extended episodes, A Short Film About Killing and A Short Film About Love are also worth time as each adds more dimension to the original episodes and even slightly alter the "message," making them complementary instead of supplementary).

Kieslowsi's Dekalog and Kor-Eda's After-Life are my two top Criterion ish list titles.

I viewed to per night the first time and that worked well for me.
Well put about your foray into the world of Ozu!

I'd like to check out the other Kieslowski films at some point. The Dekalogue was the last new (to me) films of his which I was able to see...great stuff!

Did anyone watch Anthony Bourdain hosting TCM last night? All of his movie picks besides The Searchers were Criterion movies!

What titles? I no longer get TCM. Even if I still did, the Canadian channel often subs out certain titles due to "copyright/brosdcast laws and such," and those that get both the HD and SD channels may only be able to view the film in SD, as TCM Canada will black out the HD feed.

I just ordered the Concorde David Lynch set. Can someone confirm it is indeed Region Free, because the DVD version is Region B.

Yes, the German set is region-free.

What's a "Criterion movie"? Are the films released by Criterion not owned by other studios and simply being distributed with the Criterion branding?

Ghostbusters, The Princess Bride, Citizen Kane, etc. were all once released by The Criterion Collection. Do people still refer to any of these titles as Criterion movies?

Obviously, I know what is meant by the statement, but I'm just being an a$$ and pointing out a pet peeve of mine and a few others because there are no "Criterion movies," only movies that have been released by The Criterion Collection.

Careful, careful, both of you. We can't have this kind of behaviour in this thread!

I still don't know what films that Criterion has chosen to release in someway were on TCM last night. I'm curious as to why these films are "Criterion," moreso than some of the other films TCM shows.

Aw, that was laserdisk, and laserdisk never existed!

(That said, however, King Kong, Goldfinger and Time Bandits will ALWAYS be Criterion movies, no matter how many times Warner or Sony releases them.)

Maybe he was talking about the term Criterion, and not the dvd company in which the thread he posted that in is about. Most likely not, but he seemed shocked about it.

I read on a couple of different message boards that Criterion was potentially working on a blu-ray of Breaking the Waves. Has anyone heard anything about that becoming a reality? It's one of the great films of the last 20 years and a day 1 purchase for me.

You're right. But laserdisc did.

This is pretty funny actually.

People piss and moan about how trivial and irrelevant most of the posts here are and then jump all over somebody who posts something actually relevant because it wasn't phrased properly.

It wasn't about the next B&N sale or cover art or the next B&N sale or shopping lists or the next B&N sale or how long it takes mail to get from here to there or or the next B&N sale or 60s pop icons or or the next B&N sale or which Carlos disc gets you the ten dollar gift card or the next B&N sale.

It wasn't of earth-shattering importance but it was an interesting observation.

As for what was on...I recorded Eyes Without a Face recently and I think it was last night. I also noticed Sweet Smell of Success in the program guide recently. That might have also been on last night.

Speaking of B&N sales, I finished Three Colors last night and The Double Life of Veronique was already kind of sort of on my wishlist but it's at the top now. I might even buy it someplace else instead of waiting until July. I almost certainly won't but the fact that I'm even thinking that is rather remarkable.

The Decalogue is in my netflix queue too (along with Berlin Alexanderplatz - I've been having a good run lately).
