Default Downfall on Criterion?

I'll just throw it out there since I have no idea who owns rights to the film. Is there any chance of Downfall (Der Untergang) coming to Criterion? This is one of my favorite films of all-time and I had to see it at a small independent theatre when it came out because there was no wide-release in the U.S. The movie did come out on regular DVD which I bought and I do believe it sold reletively well in the U.S. - especially after the countless parodies of a scene from the film on Youtube. I have heard nothing about a Blu-Ray release.

Also, I noticed Bruno Ganz (Brilliantly played Hitler in Downfall) is listed as a starring actor in the film Wings of Desire which I am considering picking up. What role does he play in that film? It looks like that might be him as the angel on the cover.

No, no chance. It would be released by Sony, if at all (don't count on it though).

The UK import is region-free and looks/sounds tremendous - why don't you just get that?

Why do I participate in a thread about the Criterion Collection?
Because I thoroughly enjoy most Criterion Collection releases, blu ray and dvd alike.

Last time I checked, Citizen Kane has not been released by Criterion.

So, according to you, since I personally did not like the movie Citizen Kane, I'm not supposed to post in an unrelated thread about the Criterion Collection?

Actually it has. Their first release in fact. But I digress.

I of course have no issue with your taste in movies, to each their own. I would never try to tell someone they are wrong for the movies they like. I would however like to offer a suggestion, as a fellow movie and Criterion lover.

I saw Kane on a rented VHS tape many years ago. I didn't particularly care for it, although I certainly respected some of the technical aspects of it.

But then I saw it in theatres, it is truly a different experience. It's some kind of magic when it's emblazoned on the big screen. I brought my friend Tommy. Not a Criterion type. I think his favorite movie is "Old School" with Will Farrell and he was loathe to see it with me, but he laughed as hard as I did at times.

Even if you don't like it; if it comes to cinema screen near you, keep an open mind and give it a watch.

OK, back to Blu-ray talk.

Default Whohoo!

Got my Barnes&Noble package today - Seventh Seal, Kagemusha and Repulsion.

Let me throw another topic out there. How do you Criterion collectors store your films? Right now I have my TV series Blu-Rays together in alphabetical order, my steelbook Blu's in alphabetical order and the rest of my Blu's together in order. I'll probably put my Criterion Blu's together by themselves in order by spine number.

I put all my Criterions' (blu-rays and dvds) together by spine #, then regular blu-rays alone, and regular dvd's alone by alphabetical order.

Just kidding, that's a great collection. Bonus points for having the Lost series. February 2nd can't come soon enough.

My GOD I know! Good thing Obama changed the State of the Union Address date.
I still plan on double dipping and getting seasons 1-4 on blu ray, but just don't have the finances to do that yet.

Personally, I keep my DVDs together and my Blus together, but on the same shelf system. Although there are occasional exceptions, I generally keep my titles together by Studio; so all Warner titles are together for example. It's a little frustrating for friends, but it looks much nicer to me keeping all similar packaging together.

Within studios, I usually go alphabetical unless there's a set.

LOL! There actually was an episode in Season 5 where an Obama press conference or some such Presidential speech ran into and I believe delayed a new Lost episode for a few minutes. My friend who voted for Obama called me enraged thinking Obama got Lost scrapped. I had to urge him not to call and complain to the White House. Sure enough the Lost episode aired in it's entirety after the presser and all was forgiven. If the President is smart he will schedule all events for the next few months so they don't interfere with Lost episodes.

I sold my Dvd copies of Lost seasons 1 and 2 as soon as season 3 on Bluray was released and got really good money for them(I knew they would eventually release all of them in Bluray) I bought seasons 4 and 5 as released and purchased seasons 1 and 2 for $34.99 at Bestbuy sale. Now I am waiting for Season 6 then I will watch all 6 from beginning to end(many sleepless nights)

as for the original topic. its strange that when criterions started releasing dvds they immidiately abandoned the laserdisc format in 1998. Now they keep releasing dvds along with blurays.

Well, I don't think it's too strange. They stuck with both formats for a little while. The thing is that Laserdisc was disappearing quickly from the market as a whole. Manufacturers were not really making new players anymore. DVD is still around and will be for a while.
