I don't think of my Blus in those terms, Doubly so for my Criterions but yes they would be.
Also the T.V's are replaceable. The Third Man, The Man Who Fell To Earth & Pierrot le fou are OOP, replaceable but at a much higher price if you can find them. {Granted PLF is still a modest cost and easy to find, the first 2 are going to kill my wallet and yes they have to be Criterion}

I had The Third Man and sold it for 65 bucks about a year ago. I'm still kicking myself.....

It is not a shameful release by any stretch of the imagination. And the Criterion release does not use the same "dreadful Studio Canal" transfer.

I've seen the Universal release of the same and I wouldn't consider it good by any stretch.

That's fine, I respect your opinion, but I cannot possibly agree with you.

After all, this is your standard take on every Blu-ray release that does not have a brand new transfer/new scan, etc., - shameful, dreadful, outdated, etc. Things are certainly not black and white (no pun intended) as you imply.

For this specific film, the current transfer is more than fine. It is a color film printed in black and white with all sorts of different 'corrections' applied to make it look rough, soft, etc.

Because it's such a legacy title in the collection (20 years!), For All Mankind tends to get overlooked. But it really is a gem jayputter. I'm due for a rewatch myself...

My question is this:
does anyone else do this?
About 50% of my Criterion blu-rays were blind-buys and I'm still very happy with everything I've got
I'm pretty sure most of most Eclipse sets and the Teshigahara box-set were all blind-buys and I'm also very happy with them

Or I am just being overly impressed here for a moment ?
I saw La Haine during its initial theatrical fun back in the 90s. It came with an excessive amount of hype, which kind of annoyed me at the time. Not the film's fault though.
I was able to re-visit it about 12 months ago (a friend has the Studio Canal version, which is very good btw) and the film really holds up. Very solid; great drama, pretty cool style, quality video and audio package. Plus, Vincent Cassel
I recommend it and will be getting this Criterion edition of the film.

Favorite films would probably be Secret Sunshine, Double Life of Veronique, Hara-Kiri, Red, Rushmore, Seventh Seal, Sanjuro, World on A Wire, Thin Red Line, Third Man, La Jetee, A Night to Remember, and Seven Samurai.

I really liked the extras on Traffic. As someone who (unlike a lot of folks into Criterion) didn't go to film school at all, i found Traffic's extras to be really enlightening.

Are you a Buffalonian, Billzfan?

Why? What's wrong with the current transfer?
4.5 video rating doesn't sound too bad...

I'd just put it all on the Blackhawks again.

I wouldn't be able to help myself.

I would invest in a new dvd company and restorations to the most obscure films with the money from my sports bets and thus on June 8th, 2012 we will have a new "Collection Discussion" thread to talk in and praise for it's awesome restorations and releases. OUT 1 would have already been released. Oh and no spine numbers.
