PL3 takes an interesting turn...great stuff! I have been following the story, too. What a sad and creepy story about our legal system.

I lean toward your thinking on this. The voiceovers didn't really turn me off but they did seem a bit much at times. Heavy-handed was a pretty good way of putting it.

Has anyone in this forum ever seen the documentary CINEMANIA, which is about five super obsessed film buffs living in New York City, and how they spend their entire days going from theater to theater and literally catching films nonstop.

I somehow think that this Doc would be a great addition to the Criterion Collection. Considering that it's about very obsessed film buffs, I think it would perfectly suit Criterion to bring this out somehow. It wouldn't benefit from a Blu-Ray though, since it was shot on standard def, but a DVD would be nice.

So, for those of you who have seen this documentary, I'd like to hear your thoughts. Would you like to see Criterion give this thing a release?

And for those who don't know about the film, here's a trailer, which doesn't really do the film any justice:

EDIT: Here's a pretty good clip from the film.

I honestly think Malick would struggle making a film without voiceover. I think he would be lost. Would love for him to try, because it seems like his crutch.

Too me, atleast, prolonged use of voiceovers can often come across as weak filmmaking, as if the director couldn't figure how to visually translate an idea to the audience, and in Malick's case it can sometimes feel overbearing, as if he is trying to force feed his opinions and philosophy to you. That was def how I felt about Tree of Life, and really heavy handed too.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I'm not really sure why, but I guess they have to find that fine line. I found that it worked in Thin Red Line, even though there was a lot of it. Maybe it was because of the nature of the setting, and how people take stock and reflect on their lives in near-death experiences, or when surrounded by so much death and brutality. It seemed to have a natural place.

I know there is a lot of less than ideal camerawork, but I'd really love for a box set of the PL movies to come to Blu. Compelling stuff.

I only got the chance to see Pierrot le fou today, but what a hell of a film. I've only seen it once more when I wasn't too well educated in Godard, and it bored and infuriated me; now, I can honestly say it's one truly amazing film. The way Godard mixes so many different styles at once, it's almost like every film before hand was him practicing and experimenting with multiple styles in order to perfect this one film.

In a weird way, it reminded me a lot of a cartoon. I couldn't get the idea out of my head. The way Godard uses colors, the way characters acted, the scenarios, it all felt like something out of Looney Tunes. Definitely fun and entertaining, but still not for a casual viewer.

You may recall some of us posted our concern over melted plastic/glue on the spines of several Criterion releases.... I got a response back from Criterion regarding the issue...

Quote:
Thank you for your email. We are aware of the shrink-wrapping issue and are sorry to hear that you received one of the affected cases.
During the manufacturing of some of our recent Blu-ray releases, the outer shrink wrap melted to the case spine because of excessive heat in the wrapping equipment. If you received one of the damaged cases, we would be happy to send you a replacement case for the following affected Blu-ray titles: ˇALAMBRISTA!, SHALLOW GRAVE, HAROLD AND MAUDE, THE GOLD RUSH, and SUMMER WITH MONIKA. Please note that these are the only titles that were affected.

If you have one of these damaged titles, please send the cover art sleeve (cover art only) to my attention at the address below. Please include your email and postal address, and please do not include any additional packaging. When we receive the cover art, we will send you a new Blu-ray case and cover art, and a $10 gift certificate to Criterion.com. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns, and thank you for supporting Criterion!

Personally I just want a new clear Criterion case and honestly don't feel like mailing back my cover artwork to get one. I don't order direct from Criterion enough for the 10.00 Gift Certificate to be of a benefit. But for others there you have it.

I was early to the sale and bought three Criterions and We Need to Talk About Kevin (in that wonderful slipcase) before the 10% (which would have given me 7 dollars off if used, btw, so boo to me on that topic) and I got CE for under 20. It shot up to $23/after coupon a few hours after I bought it. It then shot up with the rest of the Criterions in the middle of the night the first night of the sale. Glad I got in early as I've wanted that one for quite awhile at a good price and thankfully it came in the case not the digipack.

I finally received my order yesterday - I'm pretty sure orders that go through DHL take longer because they transport them to the post office which in turns has to sort the package out themselves so you have two middlemen (per se) to go through to get your order.

And with that order, I finally have Insignificance in my collection. A wonderfully misunderstood film that lingers in the mind long after the credits roll.
Thank you for confirming that Chungking Express went up in price the first night of the sale. I wasn't completely sure if it happened, or if I had just been staring at the DVD version. That one's at the top of my Criterion want list now, hopefully it'll go on sale somewhere in the near future so I can grab it at a decent price. I ordered thirteen Critierions that first night, only because I was able to use both the 10% and 25% off coupons - yeah, I'm a total cheapskate when it comes to media

I did have to send M back to DD, as it looked like the back of the case was hit by a box cutter. They responded very quickly to my email about the issue, hopefully the replacement arrives in better shape - and in a reasonable amount of time after the almost-two-weeks it took for my original orders to arrive.

I quickly read reviews on almost every Criterion that DD had in stock that night, including Insignificance. I passed on it as the review made it sound depressing, so I figured I'd try to rent it before buying. Maybe I should've grabbed it anyway...

...and I just noticed that Traffic, which had been back-ordered, has now shipped

Even though I've seen it a few times on DVD, I can't wait to check out the Blu-ray transfer of Seven Samurai. Haven't watched it yet, but I'm sure it'll live up to my expectations
