I've heard of Rhode Island, and I'll use Robo-Cleese, my GPS with the John Cleese voice pack, to get there. Also, I wasn't kicked out, I came back willingly as Canada is the superior country for the most part, except when we have those freaks in Montreal hacking up Chinese students on the Internet and mailing the body parts across the country and to our political party headquarters.

Fact is 4 years ago, they were releasing great films for the first time on dvd without releasing any of these "bigger titles will help release obscure films" films and they seemed to be doing fine. I just think they are pushing towards a different market than years ago.
And there is a simple reason for that...BD market is not growing fast enough to make up for the DVD slide, and the overall physical media market is stagnant because of it.

And I forgot to add that 4yrs ago was the start of the recession in the US, so that doesn't surprise me. The home entertainment market took a serious hit, like all other markets, and has just started to approach pre-recession numbers recently.

Gotta ask this...where did you get a GPS that takes voice packs? Which GPS? Would be a trip if he purposely got you lost and then mocked you!

Edit: I have a feeling it may be the next Tiny Furnature of the forum.

It's very offbeat and quirky, but probably not something I'd watch again. I imagine it will receive very mixed reactions.

I thought it was a very surprising choice, as it doesn't seem like something Criterion would normally pick. I almost thought it might be a belated April Fool's Day joke, like their CHUD and Kindergarten Cop announcements.

The two main characters make a very brief cameo at the beginning of the vastly superior Chopping Mall. Now there's one I'd love to see a Criterion release of!

I'm definitely hoping the rumors of Rosemary's Baby and The Blob hitting blu-ray this October are true! Those would be day-one purchases for me! The DVD of The Blob is a little skimpy on features, so I hope they revisit that one. Maybe they can get the rights to Beware! The Blob! as a fun little extra, similar to how they released Murder A La Mod and Killer's Kiss.

I didn't think it was awful awful, but I was quite underwhelmed by it not only in terms of Fincher's filmography but also after how much noise this title constantly gets. I think Fincher directed it way too heavy-handedly - he should've taken some pages from North by Northwest's book. Which is part in parcel why I agree with Shell's post: the ending destroys the rewatchability of the film.

It looks great though, which is something that can be said for every one of Fincher's films. The man has a terrific eye for detail and framing.

Still, I am going to get this one alongside Les Enfants du Paradis, Lonesome, Rosetta and La Promesse once the second sale hits .
Yeah, I looked on the Criterion site expecting this title to be one of the discounted releases. Oh well, I'll still be picking it up sometime down the line.

Sentiments echoed, this is a great announcement. The second such one in a row now; I'm interested in picking up every title except The Game and Eating Raoul. Les Enfants du Paradis is actually one of those titles that I won't be waiting around to game a discount for. That comes highly recommended folks, and is one of the crown jewels in the Criterion Collection. (I just don't know if I want to pick up this release or the upcoming UK one)

I don't watch baseball. It was a joke, one of those "Woman..... leave me alone, don't you know I'm trying to watch the game" jokes.

I'm also from Kentucky, so what's Hockey (kidding)? It's all Kentucky Wildcats and Oakland Raiders for me.

I know it was a joke, I was extrapolating it a bit further based in your film tastes. Hence the smilie at the end.

I won't make NASCAR jokes, I promise.

It's a TomTom, and you can pay for voice packs, or get them some other way. I could get Daria Morgendorffer, Homer Simpson, or KITT if I wanted. I didn't pay for Cleese. And he is snarky to boot.

Arggghh I'll rent Eating Raoul soon. I have liked pretty much all of CC's cult releases so far on blu, Hausu, Something Wild, even Robinson Crusoe on Mars. I have Black Moon on the way as a blind buy.

Funny, I associate the NASCAR mania more South from here. Weird how different people from different places see things. Sure we have NASCAR fans, but prob not anymore than in Rhode Island or California (but then again I live in Louisville and have never went into southern Kentucky for any reason, so can't comment).

It's definitely a bit lower than those you mention. It's extremely low-budget (if I'm not mistaken, it was actually filmed over the course of a few years).

They air it on Showtime quite frequently if you want to give it a look, or at least they were for a while.

Criterion is great, and I'm all for supporting them, and do not want to deter anyone from buying this. But I imagine this might be one that people will want to try before they buy.

I think they're pushing towards the market they always intended to before DVD profits made the studios stop licensing the rights to their titles. The Game can't be a surprise to anybody, they already released it years ago on Laser disc. I like the idea of them releasing many different kinds of movies. I've discovered some of my favorite movies through Criterion, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't excited at the thought of them releasing Rosemary's Baby. If they are trending towards releasing bigger films lets hope they work to maintain a balance with the more obscure stuff.
