It was never boring, dull or uneventful like some people describe it. Really, more than a simple film it is poetry to the senses. One of my favorite CC titles now, we are close to the next sale and so I really recommend everyone to give it a try if not a blind buy.

Also, and this is really as a side-note. The menu is by far the best one I have seen from Criterion. In a word: Beautiful.
It's a great movie! I first saw it back in the 80's (it was a time where I discovered a lot of the movies outside of Hollywood mainstream and French cinema). I tought it was such a beautiful film, like you said almost a poem. I can see why certain people would call it slow and where they feel not much is happening but like you I am left a bit puzzle by it. For me, the movie just flow so quickly with so much going on I am always surprise when it's over.

DVDaf has a listing for a 'Before the Rain' blu-ray that says 'not announced'. Inside information that this upgrade is coming? I don't recall any other clues for this title coming out.

I don't recall any issue with disc art not being correct. The two issues were the sound on the White disc and the framing on the Blue disc. The White disc was acknowledged and corrected by Criterion (check to see if yours says "Second Pressing" as part of the text on the actual disc. The Blue disc framing was pretty much dismissed by Criterion and no correction was made.

There was a separate Three Colors Trilogy thread created in the main movies section of the forum and it might be easier to find the specific issues in that thread as opposed to searching through the Criterion thread.

I'm rewatching Pierrot le fou, after watching Breathless and Vivre sa vie, and as much as I enjoyed it the first time, I enjoy it more now after seeing some more Godard.

Just another heads up for the people who hasn't seen/own these films:

Visconti's The Damned and Godard's Les Carabiniers are on TCM late tonight. My favorite Visconti film.

Edit: Scratch that. Weird, my T.V. said The Damned about 2 weeks ago, now it says "To be announced". I went on TCM's site and it now shows L'Avventura playing instead. It seems as I'm not the only one to catch this, as TCM's board shows others sad about this as well.

Well.......buy the dvd of The Damned then. Highly recommend.

I felt this way as well the second time I watched Pierrot le Fou. It really does get better after repeated viewings.

Something I forgot to mention (Probably because I wrote that minutes after finishing) is how incredible the film is, even when you are not seeing it. I am still thinking about it right now and something I like is just how human and sad the whole story feels. There are so many important scenes but there is one I enjoyed the most. Spoiler tags for those who have not seen the film yet :
[Show spoiler]The Snaut's party scene was heartbreaking for me, and there is a very specific moment of pure power, when Hari starts crying and tells Sartorius and Snaut how Kris was the most human of them. Then she starts explaining he behaves humanly under inhuman circumstances and how they act towards her in such a mechanical and scientific way. This scene was sad in a way few scenes I have seen are. It was the most human moment in the film.
Also, I thought Bach's Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ worked amazingly here. The piece is beautiful and complements the visuals in an almost haunting way.

Decided to give my film-watching I change of tone today. I saw Ariel from Kaurismaki's Ploretariat Trilogy again. I have expressed my liking of Kaurismaki quite a bit as of lately and Ariel is rightfully one of my favorite ones. My favorite aspect of it is probably the tone and the anticipation it can generate. Some people would not classify this one as "unpredictable" but I sure do. Part of it has to do with the way the film portrays its characters. Most of them are downers with few ambitions and good luck in life. They do what they can to stay afloat. The other aspect to aid that "unpredictability" is simply the fact that this is s Kaurismaki film. We know right off the bat he isn't exactly the most joyous filmmaker around and so we never can know for certain the fate of all these characters. An incredibly enjoyable film that remainds me why I think the Ploretariat Trilogy is one of the most singular works seen in the 80s. Really, and just like I said with Solaris, now that we are approaching the B&N sale everyone should get the Eclipse .

I am heard rumors that Barnes & Noble might not have their Criterion sale in July. Some people over on DVDTalk Forums said they've asked some employees and they said they're not doing it this year. Not sure how truthful that is.

You've been doing some movie-watching this week.

I have to do Kaurismaki movies in small doses because they are so, er, deliberate. However, Le Havre is one of the best films I saw last year, and I'm hoping its 31 July release will help it just eke into the sale, if there is one. It's an amazing movie, like Carne or Renoir were making movies today, only with occasional props and costumes from the 30s in the contemporary setting. If it's not in the sale, I'll just have to watch for one of the lesser Amazon markdowns. It's a keeper.

And this year, one of the best films I've seen is I Wish/Kiseki. I accidentally fell into watching Kore-eda's film with Nobody Knows and went back to look at the body of his work. Last year's Still Walking on Criterion was a wonderful release. Anyone know if we can expect I Wish on Criterion later? I'm sure it's just personality, but Kore-eda's work goes right into me.

I can't watch a movie like Nobody Knows; for very personal reasons, it would leave me an emotional wreck. I was so glad that Criterion released Still Walking, which I thought was a very true portrayal of family. I Wish isn't currently playing in Toronto, although I believe it was screened at last year's Toronto International Film Festival, but, alas, I didn't get to see it.
