IMO, one of the best noir films ever released. Here is the link to page 5 for the lazy... Just stroll down to #86

Incorrect. The release of Double Indemnity coming on Sept. 4 is just a dvd repackaging with a "Universal 100" slipcover. It's already available for order on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Double-Indemni...uble+indemnity

Personally I hope Criterion eventually gets it. The extras on the special edition are quite poor. Masters of Cinema did the smart thing and purged the "Introduction by Robert Osborne", "Commentary by Richard Schnickel" and dropped the 70s tv movie. Too bad all they added was a meaty booklet and the radio play. I think Criterion would purge those same shitty extras and add a bunch of stronger supplements for a definitive release. (in theory)

I don't know, I think the days of CC loading every release with a ton of extras are in the past. If they do release DI, I would be surprised it their release looked that different from the MoC.

Well, yeah, only two months out there probably should have been some firm word by now. That said, that leaked roadmap/schedule/whatever has been awfully accurate so far.

If I had to bet - and I wouldn't bet a lot, mind you - I'd probably stick with the 9/4 date.

The MoC booklet looks pretty hard to beat but other than that it doesn't sound like that release is swimming in supplements. Given all the Billy Wilder material floating around and Criterion's director-centric general philosophy in the (unlikely but yaneverknow) event they do release it I would expect some very nice stuff.

Double Incorrect... I couldn't resist..

The post clearly says that it is a blu combo release. That means it is a BLU-RAY and a dvd.

"Blu combo (9/4): Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein, Airport (also dvd), Double Indemnity, Jurassic Park (also dvd)"

Obviously the person who made the original list and posted it on criterionforum.org had legit inside information. While being mostly spot on, there's been some minor mistakes/assumptions on his list, Double Indemnity being one. It was indeed announced for Sept.4 as noted by the list...but the announcement ended up just being a reissue of the dvd. They've already moved on to October solicits. (Universal Monsters, etc.) All of the new to blu titles have been coming in blu+dvd+digital copy sets, so the fact they just solicited a dvd indicates to me that no blu ray release is on the horizon.

The other two films on the list, Airplane and Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein are solicited as Blu+dvd+digital copy and have a higher MSRP than DI.

What sort of contemporary titles, i.e. The Game, would be interesting to see added to Criterion's roster? Just kinda thinking about some films that match up to their 'mission statement'? I'm a big PTA fan, so I can maybe vision Boogie Nights possibly. Hard Eight is too unknown imo, but very educational to his style being a fan... My #1 is definitely There Will Be Blood, but I can't see this as a possible Criterion or even PDL. I dont know, just ramblin I guess. Would love to hear others opinions and suggestions..

Boogie Nights is in the Criterion Collection as a Laserdisc. Considering that happened with The Game, this title would be a solid bet.

The Universal release of Children of Men had no special features. I expect Criterion will do a special edition eventually. Ditto Punch Drunk Love. I'd add Adaptation but it's currently licensed to Image.

Boogie Nights was released on LD by Criterion, but unlike the neglect The Game has received from Universal, New Line released it on a Special Edition DVD that included many of the LD's extras (save for excerpts from a documentary that New Line couldn't clear the rights for). It even has the same cover art. The Warner BD is great and replicates this release. Really no point for a Criterion edition other than branding.

While the Universal release of Children of Men is light on extras, it's hardly barebones and even includes a Cauron-directed companion documentary.

I think the current releases of There Will Be Blood and Punch-Drunk Love are about as good as we're gonna get in therms of extras from Anderson. PDL could be licensed out to Criterion since Sony doesn't seem to give a crap about releasing their catalog themselves.

I'd love to see a Criterion release of Adaptation. The fact that it hasn't happened yet is the most disconcerting news.

I would like to see more Assayas stuff like L'eau froide, Irma Vep and demonlover.

Lynch's Mulholland Dr., just to see what Criterion and Lynch could do together if they could stand to. But Hollywood can, should and will do this one.

I wish Criterion could relicense The Killer and Hard Boiled and give them proper, top-notch scans and Blu-ray releases.

Hard Eight would be great. PTA's first film, it would be comparable to Criterion's release of Danny Boyle's first film, Shallow Grave.

Well, the MoC has a 40 minutes documentary, a radio adaptation, a trailer, and a commentary. Which is easily equal to most new CC editions nowadays. Have they ever released a new to blu single disc that had extras like those Traffic or Fear & Loathing packages?

Still, since this is all hypothetical anyway, I wouldn't say no to any Billy Wilder stuff.

And I would like to see P.T. Anderson's Punch-Drunk Love from Criterion. Sony probably has no interest in releasing it anymore, and I'd rather see a $40 BD with bonus features from Criterion than one without them on Twilight Time.

Ditto. I always preferred The World of Henry Orient and My First Mister to Ghost World. Ghost World was partially inspired by Henry Orient actually.

From a technical and a content point of view, the US and the French edition are, as far as I know, identical. Moreover, I don't think we have the audio issue where there is a track missing on the US release. On the other end, there is no English sub on the French release, and it might be region locked.

As long as it is a good release I don't care who releases it. For me it has held up quite well. In fact, I rewatched it last year for the first time in probably four years and enjoyed it more than I had in the past. To each his (or her) own
