The Life Aquatic is the last Wes Anderson movie to be announced right (not counting Moonrise Kingdom which was just released theatrically)? It is probably my favorite of his films and I can't wait for it to get the Criterion treatment.

Excellent film. Friedkin's version, Sorcerer, is an excellent film as well. Check it out if you haven't although the dvd presentation is P&S.

I'm taking movies made up to 10 years ago as contemporary,
Would love to see them do Memories of Murder, that film needs a good English-friendly BD release.
Sauna, A Tarkovsky-like film by Antti-Jussi Anilla.
Another interesting film would be Silkevejen by Jytte Rex. The only other option is a Danish DVD import, expensive.

A bit pricey, but region-free and English-friendly

As absolutely amazing as it would be, I have the feeling Lynch/Criterion will never happen. & I also get the feeling a US Blu release that's up to snuff won't happen anytime soon either. The Blue Velvet release last November was incredible. I wish there was time/money to have Lynch & the studios involved do this for all of his work, but sadly they will probably wait until something tragic happens to the man and then botch his commemorative box set. The positive is that Lynch has been very hands on with all of his approved home video releases. So if he ever does get the green light to oversee MD on blu, its guaranteed to kick you in the teeth.

I guess he'd still keep Mulholland Dr. with no chapter stops?

I'm a big PTA fan, so I can maybe vision Boogie Nights possibly. Hard Eight is too unknown imo, but very educational to his style being a fan... My #1 is definitely There Will Be Blood, but I can't see this as a possible Criterion or even PDL. I dont know, just ramblin I guess. Would love to hear others opinions and suggestions..
Although not American mainstream, a couple contemporary titles that I would love to see in the Criterion Collection, and which would fit well, include:
L'enfant and
The Kid with a Bike

Both are from brother-directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, two of whose films, La promesse and Rosetta are scheduled to be released on Criterion blu in August.

Another compelling — and unforgettable — contemporary film is Polisse. It would easily fit into Criterion's slate of raw, gritty, social-commentary type films. I have a feeling this one will actually make it to Criterion.

I still say The Tree of Life by Terrence Malick would make an excellent addition to Criterion's filmscape.

Moonrise Kingdom, in my opinion one of the best films Wes Anderson ever directed, would be a nice addition — and most of his other films are already on Criterion, so why not?

A couple other intriguing titles would be Goodbye, First Love and Oslo, August 31.

Actually, just this past weekend, I saw a terrific film that could also fit in well: Beasts of the Southern Wild.

Perhaps David Cronenberg's upcoming Cosmopolis would be good on Criterion. I do believe his Crash from 1996 would be a good addition. Robert Altman's Gosford Park (2001) would be a very welcome addition as well.

The majority of these films were released in the US just this year.

No, it's not yet on blu-ray. Given that Wes Anderson's work is very well represented on Criterion and receives upgrades to Criterion blu-ray, I would think we'll see The Life Aquatic on Criterion blu either next year or the year after.

Cronenberg's Crash would be amazing. The amazing score to the film would sound awesome on my HT.

An 'older' film but:

I'd really love for, probably, my second favorite film of all time to be put out by Criterion. They have, what seems, like a good relationship with Peter Weir - The Year of Living Dangerously would be an awesome addition. The movie is tops but has an extremely horrid dvd transfer. Ugh.

I think he's said a few years ago that although it would be ideal to watch a movie straight through, he understands people's frustration and the need for chapters. Future releases of Mulholland Dr. will be broken up into chapters but he won't name them.

Actually, I would also like to see 3-Iron on Criterion blu. I've had the DVD in my collection for a few years and it would be a nice upgrade.

The current Blu is already excellent. What would be the point of Criterion releasing it?

Agreed. Fox's Blu-ray is perfect. No need for Criterion to release it.

I agree that the presentation of film is perfect, but it really could use more supplemental material. That's the only reason i would like to see Criterion give it ago.

I'll still *really* enjoy the Fox Blu-ray in the meantime.

I would gladly accept if Fox double-dipped the film. Criterion is good for extras but there are many companies that produce worthwhile material too. Just look at the latest releases and most of them have so-so supplements. There is no need to add another title to an already limited release schedule, especially if the company that currently owns the rights has done a perfect job with it .

Maybe the alleged six-hour extended cut that Malick is rumored to be working on? Hard to imagine Fox being willing to touch that, but it sounds right up Criterion's alley.

To be clear, I wasn't knocking the MoC release. In fact, the steelbook should be showing up in my mailbox any day (minute?) now.

Nor was I knocking the extras, exactly. I don't think the Double Indemnity supplement package is bad, I just don't think they set the bar very high either.

This is another story entirely, though. I saw part of Billy, How Did You Do It? on TCM a few months ago and it was really good. The full three hours must be a fantastic supplement.

Malick has 3 projects currently on his plate. Any supplemental material would have to come from others (Pitt, Penn,Chastain, etc) who are among the busiest actors in the world.

I love Malick's films. Days of Heaven is one of my all-time favorites. I just don't see why Criterion needs to give Tree of Life a spine when the current edition is excellent. If Criterion were to release it then it'd better overwhelm us with extras.
