I love Malick's films. Days of Heaven is one of my all-time favorites. I just don't see why Criterion needs to give Tree of Life a spine when the current edition is excellent. If Criterion were to release it then it'd better overwhelm us with extras.
I'm right there with you! I read that his next film may be ready for festivals in the fall.

What I would love to see from Criterion is It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, World with both General Release Version and the found Extended 188 Minute Cut.

What was the last word on the July B&N sale? Is it starting mid-month? Is it happening at all?

● Reply hazy, try again

good news: i talked to my buddy at Barnes and Noble today, he confirmed that the criterion sale will happen and begins on July 10th. He said the confusion arose from a change in the promotion: it will now include 50% off all 'art house' films, which includes the entirety of the criterion collection.

happy shopping!

Ugh... Like I'm going to have money for anything else after I get my Criterion wishlist out of the way... Wish they'd do the "art house" sale separately so that I could spread the purchases out more... I definitely have some other Kino, etc. titles on my list, but I'll probably have to skip them this time.

Doesn't this "No B&N Sale" scare happen every year? I know it happened last year, at any rate. Any wouldn't ya know it, the sale came around like clockwork in both July and November.

Thats a long wait. Oh well. I'll just keep watching the HDNet version untill. It looks really good already.

Sweet! What else exactly would this sale cover? StudioCanal? Kino?

Well, either way, this is the sort of thing that I could see getting in the way of his films appearing on blu in the US as well as in the CC. Lynch simply wants control over every aspect of the film and rightly so. Which, for studios just equals more $, time and frustration. So it doesn't get done the way it should. What would probably be more likely than a studio or CC release is an Absurda one directly from Lynch himself if he could get the $ and licenses together.

Thumbs up

I finally watched Malick's The Thin Red Line and I was totally blown away: the movie, the transfer, the audio, and I'm halfway through the supplements. I thought the their Days of Heaven disc was magnificent, but this one shook me all over. One of the best Criterion releases, indeed.

Now if only Badlands and The Tree of Life would come soon enough. :T

Glad you liked it. It's my favorite Malick by far, although Tree of Life is a close second. Criterion doesn't need to release TOL though, the regular edition is about as perfect as it can get. Unless it's the rumored 6 hour cut.

Yeah, they'd really be reaching by releasing it. I can only see wanting it in the collection for "completists" (is that even a word?) sake, especially if they release Badlands.
The current BD is impeccable. Even the packaging is really good - the art under the discs is perfect.
