And I wasn't trying to answer your question, merely making a tangential remark.

There is a huge demand for replacement covers around, with tons of sites dedicated to that:

DVDCove Fuzion
HiResCovers
Customaniacs
R1DB
CustomCovers
AllCDCovers
FreeCovers
9Covers
CDCovers

There are lots of people that are unsatisfied with what the studio produces, and an artists touch is what they want, not some template drag and drop crap.

With Criterion, I have heard grumblings about the clear cases that are different shapes (maybe all should be like that, because admittedly hey are nicer! And they all seem to hade the older cardboard covers!

Yes, but I didn't ask, 'hey, who want's to switch their covers?'

I am just asking a question that an educated Criterion group would be able to answer, and thought I'd give an explanation as to why I was asking, that's all

Ya, there are very few fans of the cardboard digipaks. However Criterion has taken steps to rectify this issue themselves, halting the use of digipaks and offering replacement cases and cover art for all of those initial titles.

I'm glad they did that, most studios would just say tuff luck.

I've been on vacation since the 12th and it seems everyone here is missing the point...in April we will have more Binoche in 1080p...and CRITERION 1080p as well.

This is top priority, not replacement cases or Ride With the Devil or anything else...just that we have more La Binoche.

according to this:
http://www.criterion.com/library/blu...t_spine_number

there are 28 released Blu-Rays (including tomorrow's Che title):

i have about 11 of them =).

first of all, thank you for providing custom covers. i know it's a tireless and thankless task, but know that there many 'hidden' fans that don't come out and say stuff but DL it and use it and they are very happy w/it.

regarding multi-disc collection, that might work for other things like TV series or anthology stuff like Rocky all 6 movies, but reality is Criterion fans luv their movies on Criterion because of the individualization. so, definitely release it in individual movies. in fact, Criterion themselves have multiple graphics artists in-house working diligently as well as subbed out work:
http://www.criterion.com/current/posts/719

they take their covers very seriously and it often doesn't require custom covers compared to regular movie studio releases. having said that, the only reasons people like me would grab custom covers is to reduce space or use different sizes... unfortunately the booklet that is often included w/Criterion movies are FULL DVD-case sized or what you'd call "odd size clear plastic" storage. in fact the reason why they use that is to accommodate the often lengthy "booklets" that come w/the movies! so if you do decide to design custom covers, do it with that in mind, it can't be regular BD cases because the booklets won't fit (i've tried >P trust me).

as for me i'm sticking w/their standard case. i tested a those ultraslim (matrix boxset) BD cases... but the booklets are too fat and too high to fit into them. people want their stuff all together.

My most recent set for the James Bond films has gotten members wanting something similar for the Criterion movies. Click THIS link to get an idea of what I mean with my Bond Set.

Since this studio's covers are plaigued by cheap cardboard cases and odd styled clear cases, I am thinking of doing a collection set of custom covers for Criterion.

Many collectors of Criterion movies would love to see sets done for these, So I hae decided to do so, in both 15 an 25mm 6-disc cases...

The problem however, is that as you can see on this page HERE, there are (in the US) 30 currently released Criterion moves, with another 12 slated for release the first part of this year.

Now, not everyone owns or wants to own all the Criterion movies, and there is no real order to them like there is with the Bonds! So, I ask all you trusty Criterion fans to help me:

These sets will have to feature a random group of 6 movies from Criterion's list linked above, released or announced. I can though, put them in groups of the most popular first. This will make it so the first and even second set will contain movies that most will own, then from there, the other sets will contain the less desired titles...

I am however not a great source of knowledge for Criterion movies, so I ask you all to help me by listing what you think should be in at least the first two sets.

So, from the linke page of 42 films, please pick the top 12 movies, with the top six that would go in the first set. For those keen, you could also list films for the other sets as well.

I don't want to have to make more than one version of this set, so whatever the majority thinks will be the final set contents.

In total, with the 42 currently released and announced titles, there would be exactly 7 sets, so that will be the final result; with of course more to come in the future.

Thank you everyone for your help!

Thanks Jedi for the information. You know I totally forgot about the booklets and how big they were, and I agree that the original covers look really good and wish all studios actually thought about this stuff when making movies, but sadly they don't!

Lionsgate releases most the Studio Canal Collection titles... at least the first few waves. Mulholland Drive is wave 3. It is very possible that it's included in Lionsgate's US plans, although not confirmed.

"Going from recent history with previous Studio Canal titles, most of these will be released in the UK by Optimum Home Entertainment around the same time, and possibly even in the US by Lionsgate a few months later. " https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=3963

The US rights to Mulholland Drive reside with Universal, so this won't be coming from Lionsgate/Studio Canal here.

I completely agree, McCrutchy... Miss Binoche in 1080p is always a welcome addition.... and there's certainly not enough, yet.

Hi bpmford.

I am a very large admirer of your work over on the other thread. I respect the reasons you went to your own thread (despite moderator interference).

I hope you don't feel attacked here. I know there is just a different mindset with Criterion. I know people who won't even replace the black plastic on their cases with a new identical case because it isn't "original". I personally don't fall into that camp, but I keep the cases as is despite having many other custom covers from you and other artists here on the boards. (and one or two of my own).

I guess to answer your specific question, it would be tricky. Most people order them by spine number, but occasionally a BD will be released of an existing DVD with an older spine number, which would invalidate your work on an existing set. (Yojimbo for example)

Questions:

Has anyone purchased 8 1/2 on Blu-Ray yet? If so, is it worth upgrading from the SDVD (which I own)? Also, are the special features the same or different?

I'd like to know what you guys think, because I'm thinking about upgrading.

Thanks whbinder,

I appreciate the comments.

I figured I would get some different responses here, as I know how particular Criterion fans are. That is the whole reason I posted here, wondering what true fans would think.

In the end, it may just be too tough to do a set that everyone would be happy with.

bpm,

This is extremely difficult as there will be a number of differing opinions whichever method you choose to group the films.

If you go by original release date, the next release could make your cover obsolete.

I think the best way would be to go by blu-ray release date as that is something that will always be relevant.

Other possibilities would be grouping by director or originating country/language.

We could all list our six favorites, but that is so subjective that hardly anyone will agree on all six.

Thanks steve,

I figured I'd try and see if there was a certain group of films that all thought were the best.

Perhaps a poll allowing six selections from the full list?
